This is incredible. I'm a Spanish makina DJ living in Reading and I never heard about it. I knew about the UK hardhouse (we call it bumping in Spain) which I used to mix with "cantaditas" (songs with a predominat female melodic voice) I'll have to pay a visit to the North East now 🤟
As a Spanish, it is really weird to listen to Makina with the speakers rapping over the melodies, but English blokes seem to fucking enjoying it, which is the most important thing. I lived in the UK for 5 years, but down the south, very far from Newcastle. People seem to easily judge these people calling them chavs and stuff, but look at the area... the goverment doesn't give a shit about Newcastle. Sad shit. I would call chavs the ones I met in Abingdon, where they decided to live like tough guys, rejecting all the good oportunities that they have in their environment, but about these guys... they have my respect, I just wish peace and happiness to them. Kind regards from Spain
Best documentary I’ve watched in awhile, been listening to makina for years and years up in Scotland, the smile it brings to my face will never get old
I love how respectful and straight faced this is. It's not some ironic meme'y mockumentary type shit like the Bouncy House / Donk one Noisey did a while back
Noisey (and anything Vice in general) can have questionable journalistic integrity especially when there's an obvious bias, but when they get it right, they really do get it right. I get why people hate em and i get why people love em. You gotta look at each doco in its own right
It's also bollocks, you can compare these people in the 90s/00s to people from the american south, not very accepting of anyone different, probably attacked a few goths on the way in for example. You either fit in with how they looked and acted or youd be fighting because of how insecure they are with their masculinity. Love the music but the generic type of person going to these things was not a very good one.
I grew up in Catalonia with Makina music, I used to go to the best club called Xque and I still loving it. I’m now living in UK and I am glad u guys like and listen Makina. Is good to see how u make ur own tunes and love as much as we do in Catalonia!
I'm a Spanish makina DJ and I knew about british makina thanks to The New Monkey. When I heard the mix between makina and MC I understood this was something else. I would love going to a rave in a city like Sunderland or Newcastle😍🤘
You know when you get that feeling where your scalp tightens up and you get goosebumps, i had that right the way through this. I'm proud to come from the North East and have been part of the scene! Well done to all involved in making this. Hold-tight!
This is brilliant. The Comusica project looks brilliant. This scene gets a looked down on - mostly from people who don't know the people or the scene. But it's among the most accepting you'll find and you're just as likely to encounter trouble outside an All Bar One. Lovely to see these young guys channelling their energy into something creative.
Mint!! Am 40 year old and still listen to makina, used to love going to the afterdark and the lads are right it's a way of life for some people.. RIP to the ones that didnt make it, and a big shout out to the north easts finest!!! Keep raving..
This is absolutely quality lads well done. I'm 34 now, got a family, a business, been all over the world but those days going to the raves, listening to that music, those days man. Unbelievable, it's hard to put into words init but you've absolutely nailed it with this documentary 👏
I'm American, but I love Makina. Even make a bit myself. I might be missing the localised soul of it, but this documentary still made me feel things as someone who's been in love with Scouse/Bounce, Happy Hardcore, and Makina. This could be a global thing one day, but it might be better that it stay in the NE. With the people that know it best.
Yeah I grew up with bounce and stuff I'm telling my American friends about it and the mc culture trynna push it over there one day hopefully my friend 🇺🇸 🤝 🇬🇧
Bro what a documentary !! I leave in France rly closed from Spain and the makina was rly appreciated a decade ago when it was at the top here ! And the people , the feeling around that music was exactly the same , this music create love and unity everywhere it is listenned and people stick with these melody in they hearth all their lives its pure crazyness !! Thx for the memory mate i rly enjoy knowing that makina isnt dead i wish i could go for a rave in England one day banging with all of you guys !!
Makina is badass, i have bumping and bouncing to hardcore ,hardstyle for 32 years,i go to sleep with my earbuds in bumping a mkn or forever the hardest. I heard makina for the 1st last night. Was so badass it woke me up, cant stop listen since. What makes it sound so badass is brittish accent. So bad ass
used to go to raves in Seattle, Washington, and happy hardcore and Spanish makina were pretty popular there in the 2000s, along with breakcore. This shit made me cry, I felt so much kinship with people who I will probably never meet. Raves really are a magical thing, aren't they?
Seriously. Makina/HHC/breakcore/hardstyle/etc are still a massive thing in SoCal, Seattle and Phoenix. I think because the party promoters have close relationships with DJs/MCs in the UK/Spain/Etc that it would be impossible to fully untangle the two communities separated by 1000s of miles. Really grateful to have grown up in the west coast raving community.
I was lucky enough to catch Makina! I’m from Manchester and as a result of going on holiday to Majorica back in 1996 and buying such tapes (Ibiza mix 95, Rambo mix et, all)....not to mention such tunes getting airplay on Key 103 every Saturday and Sunday night back in the day. Loving the vibes! So uplifting! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
A very well put together story with real people at the centre, Makina seems to be about the people 1st, music 2nd. I live in Barcelona so I’m I can connect some heads together from the originators and the current flag bearers
Yanar what things like this make me fucking proud to be from the north east. Even though outside of music we are all at each others throat Mackem Geordie Smoggie and everyone else we are all so much alike. Fucking class man. North east strong!!!!

Im from Catalunya, that was my style since the begining of my life, enjoyed every single day partying and listening Makina, good thing is that we re-starting producing, mixing, and partying in the clubs again, i have to agree with some of the coments here, we didnt enjoy mc's with songs, but i can see how you clearly did
Amazingly well made, thanks a lot for producing a proper documentary about this. Fantastic to see it made into something so professional :) Tbh a lot of my friends and family are really into this but I've never known it had a name other than just MC or rave; also didn't realise this was a north east thing! Totally agree, here born in Barcelona. By the late 90's Musica maquina, was associated with right-wing skinheads and far-right crowd. I remember having to change my way of coming back home on Saturday night to don't cross in front of Musica maquina clubs. I would say that the original valencian maquina scene, when Chimo Bayo, in the early '90s, the scene was more diverse, but by the end of 90's music maquina was 100% associated with far-right movements and skinhead subcultures.
