i was there in 1969, was very nice and yes the prime rib was good, saw nixon and the pool was nice, work on 4th floor on main building installing teletype , wasd tdy from Geeia out of Clark AB
were y'all there in the summer? i cant imagine watching the moon landing just to have the president stop by on his way to meet the astronauts post splashdown. heluva week haha
My Dad was there 3 times....I have a whole box of reel to reel.tapes.that he recorded Country Music on...After he finished his time there, that is all he listened to every Saturday on Vandenberg AFB until his retirement...
one single building (the JOC) still stands along with a handful of small structures (most likely put up since by FWS for their monitors) and quite a few sealed bunkers where they shut away some indisposable nasties from the chem days so ive been told
Such a great history aside from the nuclear and chemical contamination. Wish it was maintained as a tourist destination. My dad flew there several times in the USAF.
Sad that the buildings were torn down. With that long runways ideal for future usages by the military 👌. Now to reuse the island for any reason making it less feasible.
It is sad that they tore down all of the buildings. I do agree with you that the island would be more usable if many of the buildings were still standing. Just about all of the buildings were torn down for strategic purposes.
Just even using the the islands 🏝 for coast guard purposes for rescue and emergency services like 👍 wake islands. DOD should relooked at the reinvesting in it again.
I was on the JI closing team, the reason that the JOC was left standing was money, we did a complete strip and gut of the inside and put steel shutters on all of the windows and doors. I think that it would have costs another $15-20 million dollars to bring the whole thing down and remove the debris.

Both my father and grandfather worked there operating a drag line crane. Not sure what year
Sad they tore down all the buildings. I was on JI 1991
Oh... thank you for the information, I was trying to find out when they stopped using it.

I was there in 67- 68 at east island tx site.
Wow. Were you a radio operator?

I pulled up Johnston Island on Google maps, the island is bare now. No sign of all those wonderful taxpayer funded facilities. Such a shame.
You should see what the place looks like now :(
I wonder how many grams of plutonium are still on Johnston and Sand island?
Not much... the place is basically barren.
Enough that the government won't allow you or me to go there.
Does the underground hospital structure still exist?
No and it never was underground....lol
@@carlenedrach1777 I read where there was an underground hospital on Sand Island but that was Wikipedia and I guess they're not always correct.
I was medical officer there in 1973 for a short time and indeed the medical facility was underground.

It is the island of Konami Metal Gear fantasies!
I've got to look up what you're talking about!

I wonder how much they want for it.
