Historian Alan B. Carr Presents, 'The Elegance of Fusion: The H Bomb's Origin Story 1920-1945'
One minute of the lecture has been removed by UA-cam: a video clip from the movie 'Oppenheimer' showing a group of Los Alamos scientists laughing at Edward Teller for proposing the idea of a thermonuclear weapon. Like many things in the movie, the actual history is quite different!
The hydrogen bomb is one of the most innovative, terrifying, and politically consequential inventions in history. Most accounts of the H-bomb's story revolve around the first full-scale test, conducted in fall 1952. But the H-bomb's biography can be traced back to 1920, when the concept of nuclear fusion was first imagined as a process for powering the stars. The Elegance of Fusion follows the key discoveries and the brilliant scientists who made them during the formative years of thermonuclear research. The lecture also reassesses the the nature and value of H-bomb work at wartime Los Alamos. Though often perceived as a small-scale technical distraction, dozens of exceptional scientists performed theoretical and experimental research of critical importance during the war. This effort, which was continually nurtured by J. Robert Oppenheimer, provided a firm technical foundation for the H-bomb's successful development in subsequent years.

The Atomic Energy Commission's Plowshares program was an attempt to use nuclear blasts for industrial purposes. The Rulison test was performed in western Colorado in 1969 in hopes of making natural gas deposits deep underground more efficient to extract. Essentially nuclear fracking. This video shows the watertight containment vessel being prepared for the Crossroads-Baker device, which was submerged 90 feet below the surface of the lagoon at Bikini Atoll. When the device detonated on July 24, 1946, some of the most iconic images of the nuclear testing era were captured. To see more, consider my previous upload, Operation Crossroads: Able and Baker Day Tests.

This documentary introduces the Clinton P. Anderson Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF), which today is known as the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE). LAMPF was once one of the most powerful particle accelerators in the world. Today, LANSCE remains a very important and hugely versatile scientific tool at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Rare Footage of Trinity Test Tanks in Action (rescanned)

Specially modified tanks played an important part in the world's first nuclear test. After Trinity, tanks fired rockets into the crater area to collect highly radioactive samples for analysis. Each rocket, which remained tethered to the tank by a wire, was tipped with a scoop; these scoops dug into the earth to gather soil samples. Lead-lined tanks carried Herbert L. Anderson and other Laborato...
Project Sedan: A Nuclear Excavation Experiment

In 1962, Lawrence Radiation Laboratory scientists performed an excavation experiment using a nuclear device. The objective was to create a large crater at the Nevada Test Site, while producing a minimal amount of radioactive contamination in the process. This was not a weapons test, but rather a test to demonstrate the feasibility of nuclear detonations for peaceful purposes. Sedan explored the...

Physicist Emil Konopinski discusses the challenges and utility of initiating deuterium-tritium reactions. The idea came to him in 1942, and was inspired by pre-war cross section measurements. Konopinski worked at Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project, and is most famous for demonstrating that nuclear weapons detonations would not ignite the atmosphere.

Persimmon was an underground nuclear test performed as part of Operation Latchkey. Fired at the Nevada Test Site in late February 1967, this test detonation enabled scientists to quickly gather physics data. This data would have otherwise taken years to collect using an accelerator, if it could be collected at all using traditional laboratory equipment.
