I was an ex service man myself, and have carried out Guard duties, though not in the same way as the Royal guards. But I think the public should be kept well away from the Guard at all times, and anyone who tries to embarrass or humiliate them should be arrested, or a on the spot fine, the Guards do a fantastic job and should not be subjected to such embarrassment at any time.

These guards and sentries are real military guards. There weapons are real and they are literally guarding their posts. Please show some respect.
Don't touch, don't grab the weapons, obey the signs. The Royal Guards in Britain, the US sentries at the Tomb of the Unkown Soldier, the Mounties guarding Canadian Cenotaph, and many guards around the world deserve respect. Behave. They put their lives on the line for you.

I honestly can't believe how tolerant the Royal Guards are. I think it should be absolutely illegal to mess with them. They should be allowed to physically handle anyone who messes with them, just to get the situation over with instead of having to tolerate someone for who knows how long. It has to be distracting for one. If there was an actual threat, they may miss some signs because they have some jerk jumping around in their face. Anyone who does this should be immediately arrested and fined.

In the late 50s my mother, sister and I were in London. We saw a guard patrolling a short, almost alley-like gated lane well away from any other guarded or busy area. Straight up and down the left sidewalk. When he saw us stop to watch him, he angled his march so he could stop right behind us to turn around. He paused just long enough for Mother to take a photo with us girls in front of him, then went back to his usual path. I was 6 and still remember this friendly move. They do a wonderful job that must require endless patience. Just wish I still had the photo!

The Guards are considered an extension of Her Majesty The Queen, so what you do to them, is considered doing to her. That' is why you are not allowed to touch them, that is why they do NOT move for people, people move for them.
They are not "basically" a military organisation. They ARE a military organisation. These are ACTUAL soldiers, and have been on operations such as Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. They have fought and died on these operations. They are not a special unit that only does this role. They are soldiers first.

I was an MP at His Majesty the Kings Guard (HMKG) during my service in the armed forces of Norway. I allready had my stripes but in order to fully be a Guards member I had to do some actual guard service at the Royal Castle. They're service are calling for strict military rules and are regulated by civilian law and yes they're rifles are fully loaded. We even had extra magazines in the belt as a part of the guards uniform. These days I have seen them with earpeaces so they are in contact with the guard shack. This duty is hard work, especially during summer when tourists are flooding the erea. They where all waiting for us to drop the rifle or having a fall on icey conditions during winter. I enjoyed the service and miss the army. To all you guardsmen out there - I thank you for your service. Stay safe.

      @helgaairhead Рік тому +6

@@rgarciaprl - The Queens - now King's Guarde in UK use as you say this heavy fur hat - the Norwegian King's Guard does not. I have to guess that the gear and clothing the guardsmen have to wear are related to ancient times and clothing used then like horses and buggy's.
About fast responding i can only talk about the Norwegian Guradsmen. They are all in contact using earpices and if something fishy starts to happend, they inform the guardshack. The guardshack (guardhouse) will then send out the rest of the guardsmen and contact local Police (if needed) and also inform the Castle and its security personell. So - the guardsmen you see are the ears and eys that can and will interween if the situation demands for such an act.
When Brevik's bomb went off in Oslo - within short time they had put up several machine gun's nests guarding the Castle. There where photos taken of guardsmen/military personell behind sand bags with boxes of ammo and a loaded machine gun MG-43 or similar.
So - to me they really do guard and protect whilst beeing a face towards the public.
This is just my take on it - please google for information as I'm sure theres acurate info out there that cover this subject in a proper way.
I hope you would have the oportunity to visit the King's Castle in Oslo and have your photo taken with one of the Guardsmen.
      Blessings from Norway,
      Helge

In the US, sadly we see similar treatment of American military. Look up videos for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery, which is just outside of Washington DC. The 3rd Infantry Regiment, also called The Old Guard (the oldest standing unit in the US military) have a very similar esprit decor as the Royal Guard. And, like them, they are mistreated and disrespected by people who feel entitled that they can do whatever they want without consequence. Like the Royal Guard, the Old Guard ALSO have a code of conduct regarding how they can respond.

They wear red because to get the colour red, it's a much harder process using natural dyes (as originally all dyes were from plants) and the bright red would differentiate the guard from peasants who typically had more earthy colours. NOTHING TO DO WITH "BEING CHEAP"
Secondly, red was used because during the Battle of the Dunes in 1638, a protector ship army had landed in Calais, and had stormed sand dunes that were 150ft high, whilst fighting experienced Spanish soldiers, these men had a new red coat and shoes, and they were given the name "The red Coats" and the red was adopted by most of the Bristish army after the Restoration of 1660.
This is why Americans should do actual research before commenting on British history. :-/

Some of these are frustrating as hell, number 14 the guy hitting the public is not a member of the guards, he doesn’t even have the correct full uniform on and you’ll not find a guard on duty without his weapon. People like this give the army a bad reputation. And you are not required to faint to become a guard. Sometimes they do faint the protocol is for everyone around the to stay still whilst the medics come and collect them. The picture of the woman pulling a toy gun on a guard is fake, the real incident was a man hurling a lot of abuse at the policeman in the background, the Guard came over and asked him to move away. If your going to post things about our royal Guards please make sure it’s the truth.

If you pay attention he’s in fancy dress. An actual guardsman wouldn’t have done that and been caught on camera doing it as he would be hauled up and disciplined. He has decked (floored) the other man and the man may well have not brought charges, as he thought he was a guardsman, but he wasn’t/isn’t, just someone role playing. IMO.

How do you have “inside information”? You’ve never served in the Brigade of Guard’s (they are not officially called Royal Guards). I’m an Inniskilling Dragoon (5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards).
It is not a “Grey coat”, it’s a “Greatcoat”.
    What is a Guardsman’s fracture?
The guy you see walking around WITHOUT his Buckskin belt, is an impersonator! You know you can tell the regiment by the color of their hackle (or lack of)? When marching the arm is swung shoulder high, with a clenched fish, thumb on top. There is another form of marching, marching at easy, which is used when not on parade, and the arms are swung at belt height.
As a Guardsman is walking over you, count the number of studs on the sole of their boots. For most regiments, it’s the number of Victoria Crosses that regiment has won.
The regiments rotate between ceremonial duties and regular infantry duty.
It’s not Sharon, it’s Betty (shorten Elizabeth), also Queen Betty.
Wrong, it was to conceal blood, but that dates way back.
You’re correct about no bio breaks, if they have to piss, they will do so. It doesn’t show on the trousers (pants).
As a warning, you can get a reaction out of them, but it will be a bad day for you. As I mentioned the have studs and steel plates on the soles of their boots, they come to attention and slam their boot on top of your foot. This typically breaks your foot.

I wish they'd do their research. The chin strap is positioned to help parry sword strikes. Also, some of these are not guards. A guard always wears a white belt, and there are five regiments of guards, the grouping of the buttons on the tunic indicates the seniority of the regiment based on age/establishment, the last being the Welsh Guards in 1915. Personally, I was a cavalryman.

Years ago I was in High School band... in Bossier City, Louisiana. Our band marched military style, and our uniforms were heavy wool pants and thick wool jackets, with a lot of brass buttons that we had to remove, polish, and put back on each time we were to wear them. You had to wear a t-shirt or a tank under the jackets because of the wool. When we would go to a game and perform, we had to sit through the entire thing, no matter what. We could use the restroom if we had to, but couldn't leave - we had to arrive together and leave together on the same bus. Once we would get on the bus at the end of a game, we all took our jackets off and let out a sigh of relief. I remember having to march down a big street and our band met up with all the other bands in the area, and we played the National Anthem and other patriotic songs for the Fourth of July. It was 1976 - the Bicentennial. It was HOT. I do not recall anyone ever passing out, though.
Our high school, Bossier High School, did not have air conditioning until what would have been my senior year had we not transferred from Barksdale Air Force Base (in Bossier City). I wish they had A/C when I was there... some days were so bad. Every classroom had their widows and doors open with a big fan running, but I really don't know how we did it. I really don't.
I went back to visit the summer before my senior year, and my old girlfriend and I were sitting in a mall, quietly watching people. I noticed how slowly everyone was moving and commented on it, and my old girlfriend said, You moved that slow when you lived here too! It's the heat! lol. When my plane arrived in Shreveport at 9:45 pm, they announced that the humidity was 95%. I thought, Shouldn't it be raining?
I loved living there, however, because our house on base was a BIG French Provincial Revival, built in 1930, with thick plaster walls, wrought iron railings and on the front porch, with a lot of French doors on the lower level of the house inside and out. Hardwood floors, a swinging door from the dining room to the breakfast nook, to the kitchen, and a maid's quarters with an en suite. Think New Orleans without the wrap-around balconies. Our house had the tennis courts w/lights directly across our house and the house next door (only 2 houses on our street). The house next door was reserved for Exchange Officers from the Royal Air Force. When Gerald Ford was the president, he flew to our base, and I walked 100 yards to the fence at the tarmac and saw AF One land and saw him come down the stairs. I ran home, and his limo drove past our house, which he did at least twice a day while he was there. It was my house, the RAF house, a street, a big yard, and then the house Gerald Ford stayed in. I got to know some of the CIA Agents and one of them taught me CIA commands for the dogs. lol.
But, YES, it was HOT there. But, after living there a while you get used to it, and it was the longest I had lived anywhere growing up.

Oh my good god. You are chosen because your regiment is currently carrying out royal guard duty. Every regiment does this duty, as well as the navy, and the RAF. If you are a serving member of the british armed forces, there is a possibility that you will by given royal guard duty when it is your regiments turn.

My uncle was in the military he always told me, to be part of the queens guard you don’t sign up you get chosen, not all the hats are made of real fur now about a third of them are an artificial fur and a bit lighter, they’re guns are always pretty much always loaded, the heights important to make them look tall and intimidating.

They aren't made from bear skin anymore, they are made from faux fur due to the lack of bear pelt available. Although well looked after original bear fur caps are still in circulation within the guard. They are also allowed to use the bayonets on their weapons not just wave it in your face.

    • @belfastbrit
      @belfastbrit 2 роки тому +6

No, they are still made from real bear skins. The skins are supplied by Canada and are obtained by an annual 'legal' culling of the bears I'm told.

They are made from Canadian Bear pelts they are not made from fake anything they don't get new ones made for every Trooper because they cost over £5,000 each so they wear other ex Troopers Bears Skins, they do a 6 month tour and then go to combat readiness or a war zone and when they retire from the army they don't get too keep the uniform unless a senior officer.

Guards units are usually elite troops in most armies. In the days of combat being more hand to hand and less cerebral, BIG men were preferred. So there is a height requirement in most armies for guards units. In Napoleonic times the term 'guard' was used as a designation for better than average units.... in fact about 20% of Napoleon's army were Imperial guard, or the elite-of-elite the 'old-guard'.
