      My rating for the Back to the Future trilogy:
      Part 1: 9/10
      Part 2: 7/10
      Part 3: 9.5/10
      Part one is a great introduction, and sets a lot of things up.
      Part 2 is fun, but has some plot holes and a lot of silly moments that don't really make sense.
      Part 3 pays off all the setups from the first two parts and is an incredibly satisfying conclusion to the trilogy.
      Series as a whole: 9/10. Definitely one of my favorites, topped only by Lord of the Rings, for me.

    Back to the Future isn't a cult classic, it's just a classic. It has been cited numerous times as an example of a perfect script. It's also filled with some great details. In the beginning he goes to twin pines mall where he goes back in time in the parking lot. As he goes back the delorean smashes into a pine tree. Then, when he returns to the future he goes to the mall which is now called lone pine mall.

    • @volourn9764

    Marty bumped into the controls. He was not trying to time travel at all. The last date the doc entered was November 5, 1955 so that popped up. He was just trying to speed away from the terrorists and forgot about 88mph powering the time machine.

    Even though they never intended a sequel (the "To Be Continued" was meant as a joke), when it became clear the studio was going to do a sequel with or without them, they signed on and wrote a clever sequel - which really sets up #3, which they knew they were doing, so they wrote (& filmed) 2 & 3 together. Both movies hold up better than any sequel should, and while they can't be the happy surprise the first one was, they are a lot of fun... each building upon the previous film. Definitely worth watching 2 & 3.

    • @john-ericcervini3179
      @john-ericcervini3179 2 роки тому +29

      Actually, the film originally never ended with a "To Be Continued". The success of the film led to the sequels, which Zemeckis and Gale agreed to if they could film 2 and 3 back to back. When the film was released in 1986 on VHS the studio added the "To Be Continued" to the end of the film in order to promote the upcoming sequels. In 2002 when the trilogy was released as a box set on DVD the "To Be Continued" was removed once again and it's been gone from every DVD and Blu-Ray version since.

      @Joe Plett = Also:
      The script was re-written a lot. And there were almost 40 version of it. But personally, I think it wasn't that extreme. There were a lot of revisions along the way. I know Bob Gale said it, but there is probably a slight exaggeration there too on his part - especially when he was talking about it on 25th anniversary of the movie.
      In fact, some of them can be nicely downloaded from the net now (written in 1984). But yeah, the final version of the movie, based on the final scripts was different, than planned.
      I recommend reading a hardcover version of "Back to the Future: The Ultimate Visual History", by Michael Klastorin, with foreword by Michael J. Fox, preface by Christopher Lloyd, and also afterword by Robert Zemeckis. You can buy the one from 2015 (I have that one), or a bit updated version from 2020+.
      All in all, a great movie. Of course there were other issues, such as replacement of Eric Stoltz with Michael J. Fox (yeah, I like Eric but this was a good call, as he is a method actor - and also considering his arguments with the Zemeckis due to that), issue that the actor Crispin Glover had with other parts (hence why he was not really there in part 2 and 3), and personal issues that Claudia Wells had in her life (and that is the reason why she was replaced by Elizabeth Shue in later parts as Jennifer Parker).
      All in all, some interesting stories there too, just behind the scenes. And I'm glad that some of that kind of footage is available on youtube now (especially with Eric Stoltz so we can have a comparison).

    I saw this movie with my grandmother. She had a Saturday afternoon date with her grandson and though she wanted to see Yentil, 🙄, her 13 year old grandchild saw BTTF was playing and kind of made it known that He’d rather see that.
    So she acquiesced and wouldn’t you know, getting a 61 year old to watch a movie set in 1955 when she was 31 was fun and nostalgic. She told my mom that the last thing she would ever want to see is sci-fi but for her grandson, she sucked it up and what do you know? She loved the movie.

    I think the canonical backstory of Doc and Marty's relationship was that Marty broke into Doc's garage to steal an electrical component for his sound system, then Doc caught him and instead offered him a job as a dog walker and lab assistant. There was a comic series in 2015 by IDW that featured that story, written by BttF's co-writer Bob Gale.

The cast are perfect, it's incredibly well-made, the script is incredibly tight and focussed (literally every detail established in the opening comes back to mean something by the end), and that soundtrack absolutely slaps. Love this movie. Loraine's behavior was shocking for much of Marty's time back in 1955, which was the opposite of what she told her kids in 1985. She seemed very much in heat, undressing in front of an open window hoping boys would see her, stripping Marty's pants off while he was out and all over Marty from the time she met him. All of which would have been pretty cool for Marty, if she wasn't his mom.

    16:23 Marty's young uncle is wearing a coonskin hat, made popular in that era by the 1955 series "The Ballad Of Davey Crockett". Crockett was a real-life frontiersman, soldier, and politician. He famously died at The Alamo and would achieve folk hero status, having numerous songs and television shows made about him. Crockett was often depicted wearing a coonskin hat to emphasize his persona as a frontiersman.

    3:23 - The guy who tells them "You're just too darn loud" is actually a cameo by the singer Huey Lewis. He's the musician who wrote all the music for this movie. It was a funny cameo given that he's a rock star telling the band they're too loud.

    • @0okamino
      @0okamino 2 роки тому +7

      Well, not _all_ the music. Two original songs for the movie. The score was by the great Alan Silvestri, as well as a famous John Philip Sousa composition (playing from the mayoral campaign van), and there were a lot of older songs to fit 1955 (though a couple of those were from after that year). The tape Marty puts in his Walkman really was recorded by Eddie Van Halen for this movie. When Doc calls and wakes up Marty to come to the mall, the song playing is by Lindsey Buckingham, and there’s an Eric Clapton song playing when Marty first gets back to 1985.
      I guess these days Huey Lewis would, unfortunately, not find that music to be loud due to hearing loss. He has a very successful career to look proudly back on, though, that’s for sure. :)

      But the Godfather is out because of the shortcomings of its third installment. The o.g Matrix films are out because there really never should have been more than the first masterpiece (and maybe The Animatrix).
      There are simply very few film trilogies that are each a banger, flow together so smoothly and consistently. and make up such a deeply engaging, moving and entertaining tale as a whole.

    On Marty's parent not recognizing him from 1955, memories do normally fade after thirty years, depending on the person's ability and time spent with the person in question. Add to that, their baby Marty (born circa 1969) would have slowly grown into the 1985 Marty so they wouldn't notice. Any resemblance would be dismissed as coincidental and their own imperfect memory.

    This whole series is amazing. I agree with you that changing the timeline of when Marty's parents got together would affect if Marty and his siblings were ever born. I also agree with the fact that George should have recognized that Marty looked like the kid from high school and should have accused Lorraine of cheating on him but as you say that is over thinking things. However a lot a people don't realize that Biff made out better in the altered timeline. In the old timeline he was working for someone else with George as his subordinate but now Biff has his own business with his name on the truck.

Tbh, I've always questioned how George and Lorraine could even stand letting this dude anywhere near their family considering that attempted sexual assault George heroically interrupted back in '55. Many ppl would've never forgotten or forgiven him for that. And cheat on George how, with a teenager they knew only a few days, 30 years back, who noone ever saw or heard from again?

    Here's something ironic, given the storyline of this movie. In 1985, I was living a couple of thousand miles away from my parents at the time this movie was released, and they had not seen me for a few years, so they came to spend a few weeks visiting. We did many things together, but I remember one evening we decided that my mom and I would go for a bite to eat somewhere, and then go to the theatre to see this new movie that just came out called "Back To The Future".
    Little did I realize that, while my mom and I were essentially out on a so-called "date", we would be watching a movie about the awkward one-sided romantic 1955 relationship between Marty and his mom. LOL. Oh well. It was all in good fun.

    I believe that in general people DON'T remember someone's face 30 years later. Especially not someone they met and frequented for only a week when they were 17 years old.
    When I was George and Lorraine's (1985) age, I couldn't remember the face of the girlfriend I had when I was 18! So memory DOESN'T necessarily last! So it is VERY believable that the 1985 George and Lorraine DON'T remember 1955 Marty's face.

    I have to add that the kid's funny hairdo that really was a hat was one of the biggest fads of the 1950s, after the hula hoop. It was called a coonskin cap and was made out of a raccoon pelt. The hat was popularized by the massively popular kids' TV show Davy Crockett where actor Fess Parker played the historical figure. When Marty first gets to 1955, we hear the tune Ballad of Davy Crockett (the theme song from the show) which also was a hit.

    • @Caseytify
      @Caseytify 2 роки тому

      Actually the origins of Rock & Roll are far more complex, and go back further in the past. Other influences were the original swing & hip-hop forms, as well as blues & rockabilly.
      Back then the races were kept apart in a very public way. Record producers liked the "black" sound they heard, but a large part of the country still had "black only" water fountains & hospitals. That's why Elvis was such a big hit. To be blunt, he was a white boy who sang in a black manner. Other artists of that era would be Little Richard and James Brown, George Jones, and Conway Twitty, who was big in the rockabilly circuit before he moved to straight country.
