  • IF YOU HAVE NOT VIEWED ETUDE 5 TEMPO #1 IN THIS SERIES, PLEASE GO BACK AND VIEW THAT VIDEO BEFORE PROCEEDING. This is the second video in the series of videos regarding Kopprasch #5. In video No. 5 Tempo I, I advocated for establishing the basic technique as the first step in developing mastery of the instrument. That first step leads to competency, which is of course an extremely important beginning. However, mastery is a process -- one in which we revisit past learned material and, through ambition to improve, learn it faster, clearer, and in the process, enjoy it even more. It is crucial to balance this ambition to advance with the ease of control. For this etude at this tempo, I feel right on the edge of control, not quite comfortable, but yet in control (arguably barely, especially considering the various articulation patterns!). My goal, therefore, is to make this tempo absolutely easy and fluid, so that just a bit faster is ALMOST easy and fluid and, therefore, as in control as this tempo is. As I develop control over that slightly faster tempo, I can then push the tempo up just a bit further. It is this inch-by-inch work that forms the basis for developing skills based in competency to a faster tempo, slowly transforming competency into mastery.

Both intonation and articulation are still so accurate even at this speed. Remarkable.
