- Georg Kopprasch, Etude #31 from "335 Selected Melodious Progressive Technical Studies for French Horn, Book 1" (aka. "The Blue Book")
TMEA All-State 2022-2023 #3
The fingerings for this etude can be tricky, so take advantage of alternate fingerings especially those on the Bb horn to help make some this smoother and more manageable. Prioritize control and clarity over speed, although I will admit it's a fun one to play fast.

Mouthpiece: Houser JL8, Houghton H1 18mm

Thank you so much playing all of these etudes this year and so quickly! You make learning these etudes that much easier with having access to these phenomenal recording! You are such an amazing musician and I aspire to your level everyday I practice.
I freaking h8 this dang piece 👹👹
Bravo. Thanks for your CONTINUED inspiration!
You are literally the best
I’m making first chair all state because of u I promise been putting in 5 hours a day been working hard
How’s the practicing been going? Still aiming for 1st chair Allstate?
Little late but what chair did u make
It is the quality of your practice, not the total time that you practice that matters. Among other skills, learn the skill of effective use of your time while practicing. I was taught to warm up a bit, play familiar music, then play a challenging part, then play familiar sounds again, before ending the session. Doing this several times per day helps stamina, accuracy and enjoyment, while also serving to improve your spirit.
Good job that sounds great!
Question I've only played French Horn for about a year, and my tone is fine but I am not very good at staying with the metronome and playing high E and up. Do you have any tips?
@@jacobc4841 high range is something that takes lots of time to work on. If you warm up with lip slurs every day it helps with the air flow, and you have to remember that to play high you have to get the air flowing in the horn and not the mouthpiece pressing in your face. For timing I would play the rhythm on the most comfortable open note and just focus on getting the timing right. Hope that helped and God bless man 🙌
@@ahuman3443 Thanks!
I’ve been playing horn for about a month and I love watching your excerpts to see what fingerings you use for certain note combinations. I’ve noticed though that your horn naturally sits in Bb and it got me wondering, if you depress both triggers at the same time (the F side and high Eb) which side takes priority over the other? Or does it make some new interval like using both triggers on a bass trombone? I’m playing on a double horn but I’m curious about the triple because I actually have no idea how it works. Love your channel!
Thanks! If you push both triggers it will always go to Eb.
Thank you so much!
Wonderful!
How do you get every note to come out so clean and clear😟
Horn really is like that 😂
Hey, Scott! Nice job!!
Thanks!
What tempo do you think we should try to reach by the audition day for each piece?
❤️❤️📯❤️❤️🎼🎶🎶🎶👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
BTW Scott. Did you have the your Landsman underpart shank modified for your European Schmid? OR is the JL8 already a European shank?
You can get any of Houser's mouthpieces in Euro shank. Technically this is a "JL8-E"
@@ScottLegerHorn ahhh right, sorry, I forgot you had the E.
I might try that combo. I found the 2EM S.D. "U" to help a lot in clarity just adds a level of difficulty in slurs sometimes. But hey, I'm 62 and can make excuses 😃
hi scott, can u tell me what's the shank of the cup of your houser? thank u, another perfect execution!
I use a euro shank version of the JL8.
so should we play everything staccato even though it's not marked?? because that's what it sounds like and it feels what this etude wants, but i want to be sure
Yes. The entire etude should be played with a light staccato except where the slurs are marked.
Me parecio al principio al jarabe tapatio jeje, viva México
just waiting for 105 to drop and i’ll be statebound
An older recording I made a few years ago should be in the playlist
Oh god I gotta play from 0:27 to 1:00
So to be clear we don’t take the repeat
I don’t know, but I think it’s unlikely you would have to. No reason to make the etude twice as as long in the audition.
@@ScottLegerHorn okay thank you
These are mid compared to the past 2 years etudes
