      He sure was & I’m glad he got to see his beloved Gillingham get promoted at Wembley in 2000 before his passing in 2001.

    This has to be one of the most entertaining Playoff finals I've seen. Great match, and of course... a time when 1st division football was still FREE for footy fans to watch without the use of a bloody subscription. Miss them days!

    I'm a Reading fan and can only watch the game up to the second goal lol. It was my 21st birthday! I remember when our penalty was saved which would have put us 3-0. When the roar went up from the Bolton end I thought oh shit we're in trouble!

      Yep, I feel the same. Funny how Royals finished ahead of Bolton in season but everyone made Bolton favourites. We should have had the game sewn up by HT. The Tranmere SF away 1st and first half at Wembley were about the best I saw in a great season. Tremendous achievement with small budget and tiny squad. There were tears after the game as we thought that was our one chance for the big time gone for ever. Still 2006 was worth waiting for!

    Great upload - Bolton became a real favourite club of mine at this time. Shame Rioch left, but he couldn't turn Arsenal down. It's amazing to me now that a manager from largely the lower leagues, got such a huge job in English football. Unlikely to ever happen again!

    I remember the next time we played Reading at Burnden Park, Branagan got sent off, and who else but McGinlay went in goal, made a cracking save in the top corner and the Wanderers ran out 2-1 winners. Great memories.

    Great memories of the White Hot Years. Thanks for posting this mashed. I was at this match and felt every emotion from despair to ecstasy. What an amazing day and night (although I can't remember too much about the night as I may have imbibed one or two more beers than usual :D) from a time when we were still seen as 'little' Bolton, OK in the cups but that was about all.

    The Paatelainen goal is the pick of the bunch: the one touch football; the run; the back-heel; the cross; the header back; the finish; and Mixu's flip.
    On top of that, the fact McAteer deliberately stayed off the pitch after the back-heel (not wanting to risk being flagged offside) goes over everybody's head.

    • @AbCat4
      @AbCat4 3 роки тому

      You can still be offside even if you're off the pitch, but it's a good place to have a rest after a 60 yard run for sure. :)

    • @robt4390
      @robt4390 3 роки тому +1

      @@AbCat4
      Understood - you’re supposed to get the referee’s permission before leaving the field of play, so Macca could still be considered an “active” player - but it’s also difficult for one to argue that he could’ve been interfering with play, as he made no effort to return to the field.
      I guess you’re technically right, because a referee with sympathies towards our opponents (and fortunately we weren’t playing a Man United on this occasion) could’ve flagged him off. You’d expect an honest knowledgeable referee/assistant referee to make the right call though.
      ✌🏻

    • @AbCat4
      @AbCat4 3 роки тому

      @@robt4390 The only time he'd realistically be flagged offside is if he were passed the ball, even if he's further away from the goal than two players on the goalline, which is kind of daft, but that's the rules as they're written.
      It's more likely a player in that predicament would play someone *onside* if they were a defender. This actually happened in the 2008 Euros, when Italy lost 3-0 to Holland: ua-cam.com/video/pU9YyXmxBp0/v-deo.html

    • @robt4390
      @robt4390 3 роки тому

      @@AbCat4
      Shite officiating. How could that Italian defender be in a position to play someone onside?
      If a Dutch player had been the one to knock him to the ground, would the referee have given the Italians a free kick four yards behind the goal? I think not.

    • @AbCat4
      @AbCat4 3 роки тому

      @@robt4390 It was amazing refereeing under the circumstance. If the Dutch attacker had been flagged offside, that would have been technically wrong, and it took pretty good presence of mind and knowledge from the ref and linesman to not flag it as such. It's their job to apply the laws of the game consistently, and to ignore common sense as much as possible. In instances like that, a foul will result in a free kick (or even a penalty) from the point on the goal line nearest the infringement. Yes - you can give away a penalty by fouling a player who is not on the pitch.
      As for McAteer, while he was offside, the only way he'd get penalised is if he is passed the ball and runs back onto the pitch in time to receive the pass, which is also absolutely bizarre. Or if he somehow interferes with the play from where he was near the advertising hoardings. :)

    • @michaelallcock6215
      @michaelallcock6215 4 роки тому

      @@anthonyr587 I know but thats the way it is. What goes around comes around - you may remember 1997/98 when Bolton got relegated on goal difference after finishing on the same points as Everton, yet we drew with Everton instead of winning after the ref inexplicably failed to give a goal after the ball was a yard over the line and the match ended 0-0. Its called 'hard cheese' and we suffered it and so must Reading. Besides that, what a great way to win providing of course you are a Bolton fan.
