Here's a secret to Loss: the Loss comic uses a classic joke 4-koma format Buckley got so used to. The thing is , the last panel is supposed to be the punchline, but in the case of Loss, the joke is the main character and the punchline is miscarriage. Buckleys lack of understanding of the format he's working with is what made this funny. When he tried to tell a story of a serious issue, he put it into format that was designed to do the opposite. That's why the comic is universally perceived as funny by anyone who's read at least some comics in such format and familliar with how they usually go. The simple scene composition provided ability to simplify it further to the abstract degree we are familliar with, and the joke is instantly recogniseable to anyone who've read the original comic, which is what gave it its memetic value. IIRC there were several examples of people completely fixing the scene by using different paneling formats, and/or different scene composition. Buckley just totally lacked skills or understanding of the comic medium to do that.
@@sinistrality7883 That's exacly the thing. He used comedy format for serious shit, unwittingly turning serious shit into comedy. Because he doesen't know anything except the comedy format. He doesen't know how to properly use the comic medium he worked in for so long.
this actually explains perfectly why when i first ran into the meme, I couldn't understand it to save my life. im so used to the last panel being the punchline, that the last panel being something tragic instead confused me to no end

I remember someone contributed to the joke by explicitly redrawing it, kept the general artstyle, but drastically changed the composition, with more dynamic angles and panels that aren't just squares, and it conveys the tragedy far better.
That's why it's been memed to death. It's not funny because it's a miscarriage. It's funny because it's a comic that never should've happened. A reflection of going wayyyyy too far with a story you're not experienced enough to carry when you can't even uniquely draw faces. It's jarring, something you really wouldn't see in CAD normally if Buckley didn't decide suddenly to incorporate real life events in a really abrupt and sudden manner and have such an awful resolution and then proclaim himself to have exquisite storywriting. It just... has no reason to exist and thus the actual content of the comic can't be taken seriously.

People would try to be as esoteric as possible to see if the mods would pick up on it (they usually did) and everyone started being suspicious that any 4 panel comic was actually edited into a loss meme.
True story: I was an English teacher in Russia, and one day a small teenage class of mine was doing an exercise where they had to come up with nouns that corresponded to certain verbs. Like assist/assistance, fail/failure, etc. One of the verbs on the list was "lose" and the kids weren't getting it. I knew that most of them knew the target word, but sometimes students just blank on a specific answer. So I was like, "here, I'll give you a hint". I got up and drew 7 lines on the board and they all went "LOSS". There you have it, folks . . . this comic helped me teach English.
I remember Buckley doing an alternate choose your own adventure- type comic with his main characters being re-interpretted in a separate sci-fi story arc, which was kinda cool. I also remember that shortly after the miscarriage story he rebooted the whole series, focused more on the 4 player characters, and losing interest in the comic altogether.

I hereby cast my vote for Whang’s dramatic reading of the original “Loss” comic for the top ten greatest moments of this channel.
On another note, this whole story helps to remind me, no matter how nervous I may get about my own creative pursuits, I will probably never fuck up this bad.
"The grand plan for the comic."
I feel dizzy I can't even.
I mean he did.
He had a long storyline near the end of Ethan losing everything then killing himself to save those he cares about with no one knowing.
Good or bad it was a grand plan.
That guy looks exactly like a real life version of Chris Griffin.

His background is loss.... genius. the masks, the plants, the guitars....
I don't see it.

LMAO I lost it at the skull gifs.
from now on, whenever i don't get something, i'll assume it's a LOSS reference. like, "why is donald glover shirtless in his latest video? --nvm, probably a LOSS meme."
Haha, that's already a thing that happens

I was not expecting THAT episode of Fresh Prince to come up. There were several moments that made you cry, and that was one of them... they actually proved Will could act. Cant say the same about this comic though >_>

I got the test results back. I DEFINITELY have breast cancer.
I did nawt hit hur, I ded NAWT.......Oh hai, mark.
the end was a little bit rushed, but maybe you had to poop.
more room out than in :-)
His endings are always rushed. Maybe he has diarrhea?
That is correct. Even though I thought I could hide it. You're like a ninja, except for butts.
8-bit theater and vgcatz made my senior year of high school less boring.
After years of 8-bit Theater and VGCats, I'm fairly certain they made them feel more boring because I became so much more acutely aware of how boring studying is.
The dude who made VG Cats draws porn of Leo and Aeris now. He still updates the comic but it’s very infrequent.
@@bryansbooks oh, THAT'S why he barely ever updates. I stopped reading the comic because his updates pretty much ceased one day. Noticed later that they are just extremely intermittent, but didn't care enough anymore to randomly check every few weeks. Found out recently, much to my surprise, that 'Real Life' started updating again.
But don't care.
Vg cats was probably one of the best webcomics, out of the, like, six that are actually good.
Well, there are a lot of webcomics i think are pretty good! Merryweatherey's stuff, She-Ra reboot fancomics, among others!
Perry Bible Fellowship and Horribleville are two of them
Camp Weedonwantcha was pretty good.
CAD in the early years was great. It was self aware like you said, and the gags were stupid in the right ways. Then he got big and he turned weirdly serious. Even way before Loss he had fallen off the rails.
Damn, shots fired at UA-camrs who use the same 'animation' in their videos for years at a time
AJ Patterson holy fuck ikr their are only a few good ones.
I wasn’t really sure what he was talking about tbh
AJ Patterson Game Theory is a prime example
OOohhhhh a miscarriage,
i thought it was about Abortions
Kipper Klank same
I thought the girl died in the hospital
Exuberant Raptor nope
A shame, an abortion would be hilarious
@@tortron yee an abortion would give it more of a dynamic "lore". Like why did she do the abortion. Is she feeling guilty? Didn't she tell the guy? Etc etc.
But instead it's just a dumb miscarriage
I think a lot of the really esoteric memes for loss MIGHT have their roots in Facepunch. I remember loss posting got so bad, it was banned forumwide, with an instant permaban. People would try to be as esoteric as possible to see if the mods would pick up on it (they usually did) and everyone started being suspicious that any 4 panel comic was actually edited into a loss meme.
Wait, why are you just a floating head with hands? Is there something wrong with your recording?
Yeah, must be the recording unless he actually is a floating head with hands
Lemme r/wooosh myself here. He's wearing a camo hoodie. Hahaha, "camo = invinsible" joke. So funny
@@thetalkingfist9482 trump?
Might have something to do with the lighting. But what lighting makes a whole torso dissappear, fire?
Think he accidentally wore a green shirt and the recorder thinks its a green screen.
That first strip just reminds me of the theory that CAD is actually funny if you just stop reading after two panels
"Hehe."

Tim Buckley has so much in common with Arin Hanson, the only difference is that Buckley still draws new pages for his comic.
At least we don't hear him. I wish Arin would stop getting VA gigs, I get so uncomfortable hearing that creep.

I don't believe this one bit
This did not happen
Did Obama say loss too?

3:10 The writers misspelled 'Magneto' , unless there's a Mageto character I was unaware of.
JACKWAGONS !!
Hey, Nice catch.
I'd love to hear more input from you on lost media. Possibly with Blameitonjorge.
so could you say that he went through the five stages of grief?
over
loss?
He probably grieved more over Loss than over the actual miscarriage, if we can take anything away from his... statement

I once found a framed print of Loss in an antique/secondhand shop about five or ten years ago. I shit you not. I almost bought it but I was with my mom (she wanted to go antiquing for Mother's Day) and did not want to try and explain it to her or why I wanted it.
Like any weird curio in an antique shop it was probably powerfully cursed anyway, so it's for the best. I took a pic, but it was many phones ago
This comic feels like when you are having a very serious conversation and you are trying so hard not to laugh
its been 6 years but this is still peak commentary with all the live action explainey hands happening and 3/4 standing positions

Tim Buckley looks like a bootleg Matthew Mercer.
I was a homeless nomadic traveler in the early days of the internet before Facebook and Instagram. Back then only the rich had laptops and cellphones would only play Tetris. I am a family man now with stability and work ethic..... But I missed a fair amount. It was only a year ago that I learned what channel awesome is/was. Sooo learning about the bizarre history of the early days of video sharing/diy nerd culture is just a treat man. You are one of my fav tour guides. Keep on keeping on brother. ^nn^
Loss has gotten to the point where its fame has superceded that of its own origins. There are people who know the meme who have never heard of Ctrl+Alt+Del or don't know the name Tim Buckley. Hell, Loss is such a meme that asking if something is Loss is also a meme. This fuckin thing is the SCP-3812 of memes.
