    I highly recommend reading 'Punished By Rewards' and 'No Contest' by Alfie Kohn because of the insights that they offer into human nature when it comes to things like rewards and competition.

    Good video.
    The more I think about it, the more wrong I think it is to encourage children to be competitive with one another.
    Children tend to neither be good winners or good losers.
    We need to nurture cooperative behaviour in our kids.

    • @thegombie
      @thegombie 6 років тому +3

      Captain Andy I disagree. Losing and winning is not about making people feel good or bad. Competition breed ambition and a strive to do better if taught correctly with children. Otherwise they will end up with a reactive mindset than a proactive one. It is important not to punish for losing though. Smothering and insulating children builds bad character many single mother studies have shown.

    • @pogogo51
      @pogogo51 5 років тому +1

      @@thegombie Is ambition a good thing to teach children, even? It seems to me that ambition manifests more as a need to be the best than a need to do better. Is that a good want to have in a horizontally organized society without hierarchy? Also losing is a punishment for children.

    • @thegombie
      @thegombie 5 років тому

      @@pogogo51 well have horizontal heirachry is bad since everyone is different and excel at different attributes, each person need to reflect on their strengths and weaknesses. How can people figure that out without pushing themselves forwards. Ambition doesn't have to be tied to others only self growth. World would be full of drones otherwise and nothing would get done.

    • @pogogo51
      @pogogo51 5 років тому +1

      @@thegombie My understanding was that the drones are created by a system where people's work is so meaningless to them that they only do it out of necessity. I honestly think that you don't have to "push" the majority of people into productivity.
      A competition with winners and losers necessarily measures one child against another, and I think that kind of thinking is counterproductive in a society based on mutual production and distribution based on need. Although tbh I'm kinda new to this whole ancom thing so I might be misrepresenting lol.
      I found my strengths and weaknesses as a child because I was curious about them.

    • @thegombie
      @thegombie 5 років тому +3

      @@pogogo51 That's the problem with society is that competing and winning/losing are not the same thing but they make it as though that's why you compete. I HATE competing against weaker/less skilled people because I get nothing out of it, the importance of competing is improving myself.
      Unfortunately most people are not taught this way, Infact my best friend just likes to win and hates losing. Which is great for me because I like losing as long as I get to a point when I do win. It means I improved at something and he hasn't (or less than I have).
      I've applied that to everything in my life, it's about competing against yourself and being able to reach your potential.
      I was raised as a drone doing the retail jobs as a teenager. But now I'm in my 30s and have succeeded in 3 different career paths, and thinking now of trying my hand at something else I'm also have interest in.
      Failure is taught to be feared, but I embrace them as important lessons. Winning is only to measure your skill level. If you want to be good at something you need to get out there and lose so you can figure out what you need to improve on. There's always someone better out there so winning against someone had little substance, teaching otherwise breeds low self-confidence and self-esteem as you will need to look to others for validation not yourself. It's why the world is rife with envy.

    I think Laozi was an anarchist. I recently read the Tao Te Ching for the first time and some of the principals align perfectly with anarchist philosophy. There’s a whole section where he talks about states and governments and he talks about how control and hierarchy create problems in society. The entire Taoist principal is aligned with the way of nature and letting everything including human societies, develop naturally with respect for other people’s liberty and autonomy. It’s super trippy I might read up more and make a video about it on my channel soon.

    • @tranquil87

Capitalism goes completely against the Tao because it is about domination and control, the opposite of allowing society to form natural structures. Taoism is not about capitulating to the status quo. There are a lot of people who misread it this way or try to twist the ideas but if you actually read the Tao , it’s very explicit about its disdain for hierarchy and coercion

    • @b.bryndunleavy8934
      @b.bryndunleavy8934 6 років тому +16

      Human behavior is not necessarily human nature. Our nature is to be adaptive, but we aren't infinitely adaptive. There are certain absolutes and limits to human nature. Obviously having hierarchies in political and professional life negatively affects people... we can't adapt to being cogs in a machine very effectively. But in some instances: say, parent-child or teacher-student, hierarchy is desirable and helpful to an extent. In these instances, authority is naturally self defeating and the purpose of the hierarchy is to advance the subordinate to a level where they no longer need to be subordinate. If parents and teachers do their job properly, they become increasingly irrelevant to the child-student who becomes more and more competent and independent.
      Aside from that, though, there are situations where hierarchy is justified and desirable. If a sailing vessel has no captain, but practices a form of democratic decision making, how are split second decisions made in the face of catastrophic events? Expediency and decisiveness are necessary in some human endeavors, and hierarchies of competency and experience help the best suited of us be in positions where we best serve the collective.
      That being said, hierarchical structures should be limited to instances where they are beneficial and justifiable; and we should take care to ensure such hierarchies are both confined to these instances and based upon merit and competence, allowing for the greatest amount of social mobility withing the most horizontally organized society reasonably achievable.
      Great video, man

Thank you for helping me learn about libertarian socialism. You have explained things in such an effective way and this philosophy has inspired me to take things into my own hands and help people who are suffering.
    I feel like my whole country (the USA) has been collectively gaslit for a long time and told that the dehumanization of capitalism is somehow our fault, like we're just not working hard enough or buying enough things or whatever. It is so self affirming to learn that the alienation and lack of autonomy we feel is real and is backed up by research studies. Now young people are starting to give the finger to the establishment and I really hope we can channel that into something constructive.

    YES LIBSOC!! Had a question for you.. how can a society protect civil rights from being violated in an anarchist society? the state, while also protecting the status of the bourgeois, ideally also enforces laws and places consequences for breaking these laws. While a collectivist society could technically regulate these things through voluntarily refraining from interacting with individuals who perform such actions, is there a clear ideological stance taken by anarchists on protecting civil rights?

    • @scottylilacleona9193
      @scottylilacleona9193 6 років тому +5

      The state has a longer track record of violating human rights and civil rights. In an anarchist society, nobody would have the type of authority or be in a situation of power in which they could violate the rights of others, or any real insensitive to violate the rights of others for that matter.

    • @enfercesttout
      @enfercesttout 6 років тому +2

      We are against constitutions and rights. These are usually false equivalences, any crime that os under same definition shouldn't be dealt with same procedure. Individual based constructive justice is what we support. We could just flat out kill if someone crosses the line too far too inhumanly and then think about punishment of that murder later xD

    • @traceuse13
      @traceuse13 6 років тому +6

      I think it depends on the anarchists, but many anarchists do believe in law and enforcement of that law to some extent. The most essential thing is that this should not be done in a hierarchical manner in which a few people make the laws for everyone. Basically society needs to have a flat and participatory form of organization.
      The problem with the state is that it has a monopoly on what society considers to be the legitimate use of violence. And it uses that violence and intimidation to enforce laws that were neither written by nor agreed upon by the general population, but by extremely wealthy elites. And the state has a long track record of being on the wrong side of history, committing human rights violations, protecting private property and inanimate objects over human rights, etc.

      I think you need to understand anarchism some more (well, at least the communitarian variant, like Kropotkin). Anarchists are opposed to the state, that includes the legal system, and hence laws. The only rights that exist are legal ones - "rights" are just legal constructs ( claims that rights are "God-given" or based on natural law are just ridiculous). So you need to rethink the nature of your question as "protecting civil rights" doesn't make any sense.

    This is a subject that's particularly interesting to me, so I'm delighted you've made a video about it. I do have two questions, however.
    Firstly, in my own experiences, competing with other students to be the best in the class and rewards - such as good grades - made me feel good. They are tangible and visible goals with which to monitor my progress and have improved my chances of landing the job I want.
    But, they can also make me feel anxious, isolated and even robotic. Is this a sign that we should change society so that practices like competition would no longer be necessary, or am I mistaken and these practices never work at all?
    And secondly, in regards to the boy scout example, is competition is games also unexpected or is it permissable because it's play? It's almost impossible to play a game without some kind of competition, and friendly competition is fun.
    I also have some questions about authority and the family, but I don't want to drag this comment out, so if anyone knows any studies on that, please let me know.

    Talking about autonomy, my god, no wonder I used to be so happy but now I'm so depressed. My parents were incredibly supportive, and wanted me to be who I wanted and do what I wanted. In addition to being a kid without much to worry about.
    I have bad adhd, and that, mixed with this entire corrupt system and the forced responsibilities thrust open us with adulthood, has made me a very unhappy person. I used to be the most optimistic person I knew of. Sucks.

    Hello, posting to anybody here in hope of a reply. Currently struggling with the idea of how anarchism works without free markets. In an anarchist society are all jobs valued equally? If not how does one differentiate between the value of different jobs without markets deciding?

    • @2emo2function
      @2emo2function 6 років тому

      not all jobs are valued equally, someone who's a carpenter has more needs than a cook and thus it's in the communities self interest to meet his needs

      Then wouldn't this require a government to allocate different rewards for different roles? How would this form of anarchism function without the state?

    Im not an anarchist but I see a lot of value in anarchism especially in the writings of Kropotkin's and Bakunin's works on the state and authority and how they provide a clearer picture of what they wanted or suspected a communist society to look like...However I think the concept of self determination is largely illusory, after all we are motivated by stimuli, much of which we cannot perceive under normal circumstances and this shapes our behavior in ways beyond our control. I also think that any ideology that advocates control (in a generalized sense) as an alleviator of an individuals' stress is going to find an abusive citizenry, widespread ecological damage and superstition as the unavoidable result.
    Italian and German Fascism being the largest example I can think of a people responding to economic stress by becoming hyper controlling to the point of self destruction both as a society and also in the cases of individual's psychology.
    As for how controlling behavior is harmful towards the environment we need look no further than today's industrial farms. While things like irrigation, pesticides, herbicides, fertilizer, mechanization, etc. were meant to allow humans greater control over farm ecology we are now learning that these things are having both foreseen and unforeseen consequences, and that farming in a way that conforms to a more "natural" approach is the only way to farm sustainably in a world of increasing desertification.
    Finally on superstition and how it relates to ideas of control, I would advise anyone who has made it this far to look into Kwame Anthony Appiah's "Old Gods and New" but to give a rough idea of its content and my point along with it, the author stresses that religion especially pagan religions that believe in things such as pantheism, polytheism, etc. are rooted firmly in what he defines as folk physics. Folk physics, unlike regular or scientific physics, is the notion that the world is ruled by imperceivable but personal forces namely spirits, gods, mythical creatures, a personified fate, the heavens, and such like. Another important aspect that distinguishes folk physics and (by extension) religions from physics and (by extension) the scientific theory is that folk physics require a functional explanation for phenomena whereas science doesn't. To elaborate the author gives an example of an african village's granary on stilts collapsing due to termites and killing someone standing nearby. He states that while the villagers know full well termites exist and are the cause behind the granaries' collapse their search for a functional explanation for the events will lead them down a dark road as two likely situations present themselves. Either some evil witch used sorcery to plant the termites and needs to be caught and punished or the dead person was immoral or un-virtuous in some way and there lifestyle is to be avoided to prevent the displeasure of wrathful deities. Both situations seek to reaffirm humanities control over the situation as the tribe in this metaphor has no way of controlling the termites themselves or preventing their infestations, but it does reaffirm control indirectly by associating them with things which man can act upon namely innocent but unpopular people in a society or lifestyle decisions and how we view victims of chance.
    While I don't have a well defined view of what the recourse to all this is, I would simply state that trying to help at risk (meaning mentally ill and/or maturing) individuals cannot be done by reaffirming their will but has to be done by a long process of introspection, acceptance, and guarded optimism towards the unknown.

    i decided to become a Patron for the time being, it's a bit steep, but i'll try to keep it up alongside my other monthly donations. so okay, i've been kinda following you on and off for a year now, and maybe i need to watch more videos, but lately i've backpaddled from Ancap ideology, to Mutualism, back to Libertarian Minarchism, with the justification of "maybe some government is a necessary evil" sort of thing.
    while you and Xexizy present fair points criticizing capitalism, some of which i think are quite valid, i'm still not quite sold on pure socialism nor communism. with that said, i think this video makes good points about human nature and desire for rewarding activities and fair work, etc.
    i put over 7,500 hours into GW2, because there's always a reward, always a goal i can work on, and it's funny because in WoW, you feel like you have to grind the game just to meet basic expectations, but in GW2, the standards for 90% of content are way lower, so you can get into a lot of stuff without feeling the pressure of gearing.
    the endgame vertical progression in GW2 no longer advances, level cap has been 80 since game launch in 2012, and Ascended/Legendary is the final vertical item tier, which the difference between full Exotic to full Ascended is only like a 7% +/- difference, which for well over 90% of content is negligible and mostly just for people who love to grind.
    now, where am i going? well, as i said, WoW feels like a job, it doesn't feel as rewarding, or better yet, if i can compare cross-genre, i feel like overall Fortnite and DOTA2 are unrewarding, because you don't really often get any "reward" that is really worth anything, and i know, people will say stuff like "oh well if you get this rare skin and sell it on Ebay" yeah, but it's fucking rare.
    GW2 consistently gives a fair baseline of reward, while also having those rare instances of awesomeness, which is why i sold my life to it, lol. anyways, good video, but i have to get going, i'll watch the second half of it when i am back monday night.

    Right, rewards are a useful tool, but a tool only and only useful in the short term. It's more important to induce an intrinsic desire to perform the task at hand by having the individual find their own reasons for performing it. In other words, the individual has to find reasons why performing the task is important to them.
    Good video.

    Did you get a pop filter? Sounding much better. Anyway, this is a huge reason for why I'm an anarchist. In hierarchical groups I feel like the work is drudgery, in egalitarian groups, I find satisfaction and mastery in the work. This is an experience most people have, and why so few people have noticed this difference is baffling to me.

    Exactly. Our Human nature is to better our current social, mental, and material condition. A democratic and horizontal society builds a platform that will help us more efficiently achieve all three. Under Capitalism, we must be willing to give up our social, mental, or even material well-being to actively compete for a better situation than we are currently undergoing. Want to pay your bills? Compete against your friends for a better paying position.

    Something that stuck with watching a show about education is that we should not be preparing young people for the world we should be preparing the world for young people.
