My father died of bone cancer when he was 46. He would have chosen this toward the end, he even said so himself, but b/c of laws he laid in a drug induced coma well into the final stages of bone cancer and suffocated to death. Suffocation was his biggest fear. So not only was he in extreme pain toward the end, but also in terrible fear. It is usually people who have never been at the side of loved ones dying that think they are entitled to laws and opinions about shit they don't understand. This man really is a hero in my book.
Chromozome1205 I could not have said it better myself. You are very tight, the government takes away the patients water, food, als assisted air if they have a vent. They are left in extreme pain cause the war on pain killers effects patents. Doctors are afraid to help out. Very few doctors will come and offer right at the end an overdose of morphine to help sedate the patient and slow the heart till it stops beating. But that offer usually comes after the patients is about to pass horribly anyway. I think as human beings when you are medically unable to keep going you should be allowed to end your suffering. I also believe that pain meds should not be withheld from suffering patients. The government needs to mind their own business. As long as the patient is supervised, does their urine tests, and is doing what the doctor approves then government needs to leave them alone. Alcohol, shrooms, pot are all legal and the government gets taxes off all that so those people out roaming are ok. You can die from all of that. Yes stop illegal drugs entering the state but leave patients alone. If they got taxes off it, it would not be a crises. Patients that suffer in a great deal of pain need it. It’s torture to leave them in agony. Take away there pain meds and they will become seekers or commit suicide, I think once past a certain age the person can make decisions for themselves. I am so sorry for your loss and that he suffered so much. No one should ever have to suffer like that. I truly will never I understand why they think it’s their business now what is someone else choose as far as their life or ending their life goes. I am SO thankful that when my grandmother was dying of COPD (her worst fear was also suffocating or drowning) that the doctor in the hospital she passed in wrote an order for morphine with no limit. So they just kept upping her morphine til she slipped away, and she did not suffer at all. She died a peaceful death. I can’t imagine watching her slowly suffocating, which is exactly what would have happened if not for that caring doctor. My father also passed two years ago and he was also given morphine in the final hours. Although, he never complained much about pain, we still chose to have them give him the morphine so he would go peacefully, since he was unconscious he couldn’t tell us if he was in pain, so we just erred on the side of caution, and he too died peacefully. It’s no ones business what a person chooses to do with their body, ESPECIALLY when they are in utter agony and there is only a future of pain and suffering lying ahead. We need more Jack Kevorkians and we need more states like Oregon that will allow people to choose when it’s their time before it gets bad. People use the religion argument that they’re going to hell for committing suicide. WELL, A) to me it’s their life not yours. Worry about your damn self. If “God” truly would damn someone to hell who is already dying just because they ended their suffering, then that’s no god I want to worship. And B) if you have ever saw someone dying an agonizingly painful, horrific death, you may just change your mind. I work for two women with dementia (one is late stage) and I whole heartedly agree with you. I like how Jack said "it doesn't matter what people think, it's what they feel." Jack is an absolute hero in my book as well. He sacrificed his whole career and reputation and ended up convicted because he did the right thing. It's hard for people to do the right thing and many doctors don't. He's spot on and we need more people like him in the world.

@@goyonman9655 I understand. I'm a caregiver for an elderly, bed-bound woman with LB dementia and osteoarthritis of the knees. She suffers every waking moment of her life. She can not move her limbs or walk, she lives every moment in terror and mental anguish. She pleads with me every day (probably 500 times in a day, on repeat..) to "help her". She says: "Will you help me", "It's too much to bear" & "I think I should be free..." Those who disagree with Kavorkian have not witnessed the level of suffering that these people go through. They fabricate reality to appear like good people when their loved one is needlessly suffering and begging for mercy every second of the day (I know, I'm the one listening to it). The individual has no choice over their destiny and it's absolutely a violation of the 9th amendment. It's all about $ and makes me feel like a criminal for doing my job. I would like to find a way to fight for _Death With Dignity_ in the US. It's desperately needed.

When I was a child I used to be so scared of Dr. Kevorkian whenever his name was brought up in the media, like he was Hitler or something. It's disgusting how he was treated. He acted compassionately and released these people with terminal illness from further suffering. God Bless this man.

Man, poor Kevorkian. Do you realize how many veterinarians euthanize animals in intolerable pain? But yet humans can't even have that same gracious help? A doctor's job is to prevent and treat disease but a doctor's job is also to end tremendous suffering. There should be no question on ethical grounds.
Exactly I'm a huge animal lover and I've witnessed two of my dogs being put down-in one case because of cancer and she bleeding out of her nose and she was refused to eat. And about a year later my other German Shepherd had bloat- where the stomach physically twists which is extremely painful and he was 13 so emergency surgery would've been too risky. Would I have had it any other way where my dogs would not have had to be put down? Absolutely! But I realized that ending their suffering would have been the best alternative at that point. Same thing with human patients
Chris A That law in Oregon is much too restrictive regarding which patients qualify. Most patients who choose death are not eligible under that law, unfortunately.

The definition of a "Badass" in my book, but what I find so admirable about him is how he'd probably just laugh or scoff at that description & say "I was just doing my duty". Definitely. I would like to see some of these prosecutors, judges, picketers and haters be stricken with A.L.S or cancer or some terrible incurable pain ridden illness, and then see what their opinions are then. All of these so called do-gooders make me sick because none of them have obviously experienced this type of pain suffering or had a family member who has. The way the media portrayed this guy I thought he was a serial killer. But honestly after seeing the movie and seeing his interviews it makes a lot of sense. I'm going to paint two pictures tell me which one is better. On one hand you have a family member with a serious life threatening illness that will either destroy their life or end it, causing them pain and suffering day in and day out not knowing when they'll die and no knowing how long it will go on for. They can't go on and decide to end their life, suicide is taboo and so they don't want to tell everyone what they are thinking cause they'll try and stop them. Most suicides are a shock to the family cause they never are told about it till they're gone. The popular methods of suicide are gun, OD, hanging, slitting wrist and leaping off high places or in front of cars/metro trains. Most of those will cause a lot of pain before the person dies, and the other ones sometimes aren't done right and they end up causing more pain. I've heard of people who shot themselves in the head and somehow survived. So lets say gun, you're going to find out two ways. Either come across the body in your home or another family member they're living with will. Either way someone is going to be traumatized and someone will be shocked. Now here's something dark and sad, when someone shoots themselves or commits suicide (or murdered) the EMT's and Police don't clean up. They take the body and important things, but the blood and whatever else is up to you clean. Most people don't know about this till they have it happen to them. Now imagine the shock and pain of seeing your family member dead, dealing with the pain and grief, then having to clean the blood and maybe bits of skull and brain off the floor. Whoa to dark for you? Well it's happened to a LOT of people, it could happen to you. Now imagine your family member who's diagnosed with something terminal or life threatening, they can't go on and its too painful. They call a doctor and arrange to end their suffering, the doctor notifies the family and now they know it's going to happen and its not going to be such a shock. They all come down the hospital and the family members can be there with their loved one to say good bye and now the is surrounded by their loved ones all there to support him. The patient is given the IV and they fall asleep peacefully, and then pass away. Which one would you rather want?

My father is in the final stages of Alzheimer's. Prior to its onset he was adamant about having a DNR in place. Had he known what he'd be facing with the progression of this horrible disease, he would also have been adamant about moving to a state where assisted death is legal. Being of sound mind and body, I would absolutely choose the same if faced with a terminal illness. Watching my father die a slow death has been one of the most emotionally painful things I've gone through....I would not want my loved ones to have to go through the same if I were faced with such. Thank you Dr. Kevorkian for paving the way for generations to come. There are now several states where assisted death is legal and others to follow. For those who argue the religious angle, how do you know Dr. Kevorkian wasn't sent here by your Higher Power to assist those in need? To humanely help those to cross over and end their suffering? If your Higher Power is THE ultimate decision maker of the method for which you will die, then did that Higher Power not decide this method too?
Mr. Jack Kevorkian was a very brave, intelligent, and compassionate man. An advocate for human suffering, he had the courage to help those unfortunate people truly suffering from severe, debilitating, and relentless conditions and diseases no human could ever want to experience. He was a pioneer, that saw a need, and did what was needed to be done to help their suffering. And through it all, he helped to change the laws on Physician Assisted Suicide, in many states now in our country. For more than 20 years, I have suffered from very severe, intractable, and disabling neck and back trauma and pain, among other disabling conditions. I sympathize and understand true suffering that never ends. A decade ago, I was both humbled and honored to have the opportunity to run into Mr. Kevorkian on a downtown street in Royal Oak, Michigan, and to shake this good man's hand. To thank him for his compassion, and for helping those who are truly suffering from debilitating and disabling conditions most couldn't fathom, nor ever want to live with. I have so much respect for this man. Some people don't understand true suffering until it happens to them, or someone very close to them that they love. The truth is, we are All going to die, each and everyone of us. And a good chance a lot of us will become stricken with a painful, disabling disease or illness, sometime during our lifetime. We can only hope that when the end of our time here on this earth is near, or our suffering becomes too much to bare, we can find this kind of compassion through our suffering and time of need. I just wanted to say, yes, Mr. Jack Kevorkian is, and was, a great, intelligent, and compassionate doctor. I had the great honor to shake this great man's hand, while running into him on a street in downtown Royal Oak, Michigan, shortly after he was released from prison. I ran to him as he was getting into a vehicle, as I could not miss the opportunity to shake this great man's hand, to thank him for his compassion, and all his has done for people who suffer from such agonizing diseases/conditions. I did my Philosophy Term Paper on Moral Obligation and decided more specifically to speak a part on Dr. Kevorkian and Euthanasia. Originally I thought differently than when I finished my paper. All I will say is that perhaps there is much more to think about than an answer between right or wrong, morality is different for each individual, there is a spectrum and circumstances that change things.
I watched a documentary about him back in 2011, was really good. I have never heard him speak this way until this video. This man is not insane, he is absolutely right(or was, RIP) I have a friend who recently said something to me that I will never forget. He is a 20 something year old man, he broke his back a few years ago and he chooses marijuana over pills. However, there is another treatment(which the name of escapes me) he found and learned about and they said "well, you can't do it because it's illegal." His response that I'll never forget "As soon as I heard it was illegal, I knew it would work." Mind you, it is NOT a drug or even Pot or a dangerous substance but rather something that the Gov't can't tax. I don't see how a Gov't can claim to have such morals when in fact most, if not all, are corrupt. The IRS takes money from you and we can do NOTHING or they put you in jail. People who think and are actually brilliant, like this man was, are not "wanted" by the outside world, he is a wrench in their well oiled machine. The USA wants you in the system asap, to go to college, come out riddled in as much debt as possible, the more the better, shackled by debt in a 30 year home loan, jacked up in credit card bills, which credit was only invented in the late 60's and 70's and I could really go on. Car insurance is what i've said since i was 20(I'm now 38) one of the biggest scams ever. You are forced to have it and face fines up to jail if not. Think about how many people you know that have never had a claim, ever. They don't get their money back. I know what you're thinking, that money went to pay other motorists who did have claims. This is not necessary. Only when lawyers came along like Larry H Parker and started suing for millions did it become a way for people to hit the lotto. There's more to this but I, like Dr. K will never get anywhere because ppl are stupid. 90% of people walking around are "positive" not realistic and happy chewing bubble gum and cracking jokes all day M-F and then having their kids at night and events on weekends. I was able to end my dogs life when he was suffering, because it was the humane thing to do. Why was I not able to do this for my mother when she was in the same position? The only difference between the two is my mother could ask for it, my dog could not. Please do not give me any of your religious opinions, because that is your belief and not a fact. Lizzie Maguire If you mean how did I end my dogs life. I had a vet come to the house and administer an overdose of barbiturates. She gave him a sedative first. The whole thing took just a few minutes. Most of the time was waiting for the sedative to take effect. He was awake, but very relaxed when she gave him the barbiturate. It only took a moment to work, and his passing was painless and peacefull. I have no doubt I did the right thing for him, and I am very thankful this option was there for me and him. Instead of watching him suffer, I was able to ease him through the end of his life.
George, we in the veterinary field do feel the same way you do. Human euthanasia can be painless and ethically done. And, we do it in many states for prisoners (capital punishment).

I don't think any of these questions were loaded nor did they paint a picture of a bad man. The interviewer was simply asking questions to help uncover the truth behind his actions. This is coming from someone whose faith and beliefs are the main reason behind why I disagree. Even though I disagree I don't think he is a bad man. I just think his actions are immoral. This never made him look like a bad human being. It just shed a lot of light behind his reasoning.
The late Great Dr Kavorkian was one of the greatest men to ever live. Peace be upon him. If God was good he would of been able to continue such a compassionate practice for which the church opposed who teach ppl that God is love. Dr. Kavorkian is what intergraty really is. Absolutely great interview- especially the interviewees answers to questions, very thoughtful and real. This helped broaden my views on assisted suicide- watched it for a project in class. Definitely agree with it being a person's choice to end their life when it comes to terminal illness with no aid to suffering or cures.

Coming from a family where I have several people who suffer from continual and unsubsiding pain, I find this fascinating. I would NEVER want my own family to choose this option, but I respect those who choose this. I don't believe suicide is the best answer, but I don't live with unending pain.
Crazy that this is still going on. A doctor in a town nearby did a simmilar thing and got charged with neglect and a form of murder. That poor fellow ended his life not long after, meanwhile he was just trying to end someone's everlasting suffering. I'm glad Dr Kevorkin did what he did. My mother died of cancer and I saw her suffer for a long time. The pain medication the Doctors gave her didn't really work and even in her sleep she was in pain. People don't understand what's it like to watch a loved one die in pain.

i lived 5mins from his office. he had good intentions. he wasn’t “murdering” anyone. he was ending suffering as he said. have any of you guys seen the patient videos?? i have deeply research this mans life. he never wanted to hurt anyone but wanted to help. the videos of the patients they were in pain and begging for this. he made sure they had actually been suffering and in pain. i agree more than 1000%. patients families were with them most of the videos. he was honestly a good man with good intentions. he wanted to make a movement. if and when i am dying and in pain i will travel to a state that this is legal. i live in michigan. i have drove by where his office was. i feel him. Bottom line, if someone truly wants to end it all, they WILL. There is no shortage of tools of the trade. The idea of physician assisted suicide, is to make the process clean, painless, and hopefully cover bases. No bloody mess for someone to find ( which is traumatic for them ). No questions left unanswered. No frantically scribbled suicide note. And most importantly, no unnecessary pain. And just for legal safety reasons, have some sort of mandatory counselling before being allowed to seek it, and mandatory legal consultations to handle things like notorizing a will, handling funeral and burial / cremation arrangements, and so forth. And above all, the process can be aborted by the patient at ANY time. There's no reason this couldn't work. I'm not a fan of the concept of suicide, myself. I think it's usually a waste, and often a permanent solution to a temporary problem. But this isn't exclusively true, and regardless, people are going to do it, anyway. And if so, I would hope they could at least have a proper channel to go through to make it easier on all parties involved.

They are left in extreme pain cause the war on pain killers effects patents. Doctors are afraid to help out. Very few doctors will come and offer right at the end an overdose of morphine to help sedate the patient and slow the heart till it stops beating. But that offer usually comes after the patients is about to pass horribly anyway. I think as human beings when you are medically unable to keep going you should be allowed to end your suffering. I also believe that pain meds should not be withheld from suffering patients. The government needs to mind their own business. As long as the patient is supervised, does their urine tests, and is doing what the doctor approves then government needs to leave them alone. Alcohol, shrooms, pot are all legal and the government gets taxes off all that so those people out roaming are ok. You can die from all of that. Yes stop illegal drugs entering the state but leave patients alone. If they got taxes off it, it would not be a crises. Patients that suffer in a great deal of pain need it. It’s torture to leave them in agony. Take away there pain meds and they will become seekers or commit suicide, I think once past a certain age the person can make decisions for themselves. I think they should be allowed to choose what happens to their own body as long as they don’t injure others. They can do ale what they want period and choose their death if deemed medically necessary.. worked as an RN and I keep my license active. I completely support assisted suicide. Kavorkian was definitely a hero. He gave his patients what he would have wanted. He was afraid of a terrible death and that’s why he helped others. She no one was there to help him in the end. He lived out his worst fear:(

I truly will never I understand why they think it’s their business now what is someone else choose as far as their life or ending their life goes. I am SO thankful that when my grandmother was dying of COPD (her worst fear was also suffocating or drowning) that the doctor in the hospital she passed in wrote an order for morphine with no limit. So they just kept upping her morphine til she slipped away, and she did not suffer at all. She died a peaceful death. I can’t imagine watching her slowly suffocating, which is exactly what would have happened if not for that caring doctor. My father also passed two years ago and he was also given morphine in the final hours. Although, he never complained much about pain, we still chose to have them give him the morphine so he would go peacefully, since he was unconscious he couldn’t tell us if he was in pain, so we just erred on the side of caution, and he too died peacefully. It’s no ones business what a person chooses to do with their body, ESPECIALLY when they are in utter agony and there is only a future of pain and suffering lying ahead. We need more Jack Kevorkians and we need more states like Oregon that will allow people to choose when it’s their time before it gets bad. People use the religion argument that they’re going to hell for committing suicide. WELL, A) to me it’s their life not yours. Worry about your damn self. If “God” truly would damn someone to hell who is already dying just because they ended their suffering, then that’s no god I want to worship. And B) if you have ever saw someone dying an agonizingly painful, horrific death, you may just change your mind. Especially if it’s someone YOU love, you most definitely would feel differently and if not, I question your empathy or lack thereof.

Jack is an absolute hero in my book as well. He sacrificed his whole career and reputation and ended up convicted because he did the right thing. It's hard for people to do the right thing and many doctors don't. He's spot on and we need more people like him in the world.

She can not move her limbs or walk, she lives every moment in terror and mental anguish. She pleads with me every day (probably 500 times in a day, on repeat..) to "help her". She says: "Will you help me", "It's too much to bear" & "I think I should be free..."

Exactly I'm a huge animal lover and I've witnessed two of my dogs being put down-in one case because of cancer and she bleeding out of her nose and she was refused to eat. And about a year later my other German Shepherd had bloat- where the stomach physically twists which is extremely painful and he was 13 so emergency surgery would've been too risky. Would I have had it any other way where my dogs would not have had to be put down? Absolutely! But I realized that ending their suffering would have been the best alternative at that point. Same thing with human patients

Chris A That law in Oregon is much too restrictive regarding which patients qualify. Most patients who choose death are not eligible under that law, unfortunately.

Now I'm in relentless, horrible pain and it's been like this now for 23 years. I've only been existing this whole time, far from living. The way the media portrayed this guy I thought he was a serial killer. But honestly after seeing the movie and seeing his interviews it makes a lot of sense. I'm going to paint two pictures tell me which one is better. On one hand you have a family member with a serious life threatening illness that will either destroy their life or end it, causing them pain and suffering day in and day out not knowing when they'll die and no knowing how long it will go on for. They can't go on and decide to end their life, suicide is taboo and so they don't want to tell everyone what they are thinking cause they'll try and stop them. Most suicides are a shock to the family cause they never are told about it till they're gone. The popular methods of suicide are gun, OD, hanging, slitting wrist and leaping off high places or in front of cars/metro trains. Most of those will cause a lot of pain before the person dies, and the other ones sometimes aren't done right and they end up causing more pain. I've heard of people who shot themselves in the head and somehow survived. So lets say gun, you're going to find out two ways. Either come across the body in your home or another family member they're living with will. Either way someone is going to be traumatized and someone will be shocked. Now here's something dark and sad, when someone shoots themselves or commits suicide (or murdered) the EMT's and Police don't clean up. They take the body and important things, but the blood and whatever else is up to you clean. Most people don't know about this till they have it happen to them. Now imagine the shock and pain of seeing your family member dead, dealing with the pain and grief, then having to clean the blood and maybe bits of skull and brain off the floor. Whoa to dark for you? Well it's happened to a LOT of people, it could happen to you.
Now imagine your family member who's diagnosed with something terminal or life threatening, they can't go on and its too painful. They call a doctor and arrange to end their suffering, the doctor notifies the family and now they know it's going to happen and its not going to be such a shock. They all come down the hospital and the family members can be there with their loved one to say good bye and now the is surrounded by their loved ones all there to support him. The patient is given the IV and they fall asleep peacefully, and then pass away.
Which one would you rather want?

I don't agree with suicide if the person is depressed or has a mental illness and I think that's what people are afraid of. But I agree with euthanasia 100% if they are dealing with terminal illness
My father is in the final stages of Alzheimer's. Prior to its onset he was adamant about having a DNR in place. Had he known what he'd be facing with the progression of this horrible disease, he would also have been adamant about moving to a state where assisted death is legal. Being of sound mind and body, I would absolutely choose the same if faced with a terminal illness. Watching my father die a slow death has been one of the most emotionally painful things I've gone through....I would not want my loved ones to have to go through the same if I were faced with such. Thank you Dr. Kevorkian for paving the way for generations to come. There are now several states where assisted death is legal and others to follow.
For those who argue the religious angle, how do you know Dr. Kevorkian wasn't sent here by your Higher Power to assist those in need? To humanely help those to cross over and end their suffering? If your Higher Power is THE ultimate decision maker of the method for which you will die, then did that Higher Power not decide this method too?
Mr. Jack Kevorkian was a very brave, intelligent, and compassionate man. An advocate for human suffering, he had the courage to help those unfortunate people truly suffering from severe, debilitating, and relentless conditions and diseases no human could ever want to experience. He was a pioneer, that saw a need, and did what was needed to be done to help their suffering. And through it all, he helped to change the laws on Physician Assisted Suicide, in many states now in our country.
For more than 20 years, I have suffered from very severe, intractable, and disabling neck and back trauma and pain, among other disabling conditions. I sympathize and understand true suffering that never ends.
A decade ago, I was both humbled and honored to have the opportunity to run into Mr. Kevorkian on a downtown street in Royal Oak, Michigan, and to shake this good man's hand. To thank him for his compassion, and for helping those who are truly suffering from debilitating and disabling conditions most couldn't fathom, nor ever want to live with. I have so much respect for this man. Some people don't understand true suffering until it happens to them, or someone very close to them that they love. The truth is, we are All going to die, each and everyone of us. And a good chance a lot of us will become stricken with a painful, disabling disease or illness, sometime during our lifetime. We can only hope that when the end of our time here on this earth is near, or our suffering becomes too much to bare, we can find this kind of compassion through our suffering and time of need. Thank you to Mr. Kevorkian, and all others, who have helped made this into law.

I just wanted to say, yes, Mr. Jack Kevorkian is, and was, a great, intelligent, and compassionate doctor. I had the great honor to shake this great man's hand, while running into him on a street in downtown Royal Oak, Michigan, shortly after he was released from prison. I ran to him as he was getting into a vehicle, as I could not miss the opportunity to shake this great man's hand, to thank him for his compassion, and all his has done for people who suffer from such agonizing diseases/conditions. I'm so glad I had that opportunity, and before he died. RIP Dr. Jack Kevorkian. An American pioneer, and true hero, for the great suffering of humankind.

I did my Philosophy Term Paper on Moral Obligation and decided more specifically to speak a part on Dr. Kevorkian and Euthanasia. Originally I thought differently than when I finished my paper. All I will say is that perhaps there is much more to think about than an answer between right or wrong, morality is different for each individual, there is a spectrum and circumstances that change things.

I watched a documentary about him back in 2011, was really good. I have never heard him speak this way until this video. This man is not insane, he is absolutely right(or was, RIP) I have a friend who recently said something to me that I will never forget. He is a 20 something year old man, he broke his back a few years ago and he chooses marijuana over pills. However, there is another treatment(which the name of escapes me) he found and learned about and they said "well, you can't do it because it's illegal." His response that I'll never forget "As soon as I heard it was illegal, I knew it would work." Mind you, it is NOT a drug or even Pot or a dangerous substance but rather something that the Gov't can't tax. I don't see how a Gov't can claim to have such morals when in fact most, if not all, are corrupt. The IRS takes money from you and we can do NOTHING or they put you in jail. People who think and are actually brilliant, like this man was, are not "wanted" by the outside world, he is a wrench in their well oiled machine. The USA wants you in the system asap, to go to college, come out riddled in as much debt as possible, the more the better, shackled by debt in a 30 year home loan, jacked up in credit card bills, which credit was only invented in the late 60's and 70's and I could really go on. Car insurance is what i've said since i was 20(I'm now 38) one of the biggest scams ever. You are forced to have it and face fines up to jail if not. Think about how many people you know that have never had a claim, ever. They don't get their money back. I know what you're thinking, that money went to pay other motorists who did have claims. This is not necessary. Only when lawyers came along like Larry H Parker and started suing for millions did it become a way for people to hit the lotto. There's more to this but I, like Dr. K will never get anywhere because ppl are stupid. 90% of people walking around are "positive" not realistic and happy chewing bubble gum and cracking jokes all day M-F and then having their kids at night and events on weekends. We all think we're doing something meaningful and big and the truth is we have invented CRAP. Call it progress. I do not. People staring at a telephone all day, texting while driving.....boom. you just crashed. We have all seen and heard of so much death and tragedy that people do what they can to keep their minds just going non stop with happy thoughts, BBQ's and such
I was able to end my dogs life when he was suffering, because it was the humane thing to do. Why was I not able to do this for my mother when she was in the same position? The only difference between the two is my mother could ask for it, my dog could not.

If you mean how did I end my dogs life. I had a vet come to the house and administer an overdose of barbiturates. She gave him a sedative first. The whole thing took just a few minutes. Most of the time was waiting for the sedative to take effect. He was awake, but very relaxed when she gave him the barbiturate. It only took a moment to work, and his passing was painless and peacefull.
I have no doubt I did the right thing for him, and I am very thankful this option was there for me and him. Instead of watching him suffer, I was able to ease him through the end of his life.
George, we in the veterinary field do feel the same way you do. Human euthanasia can be painless and ethically done. And, we do it in many states for prisoners (capital punishment).

I don't think any of these questions were loaded nor did they paint a picture of a bad man. The interviewer was simply asking questions to help uncover the truth behind his actions. This is coming from someone whose faith and beliefs are the main reason behind why I disagree. Even though I disagree I don't think he is a bad man. I just think his actions are immoral. Coming from a family where I have several people who suffer from continual and unsubsiding pain, I find this fascinating. I would NEVER want my own family to choose this option, but I respect those who choose this. I don't believe suicide is the best answer, but I don't live with unending pain.

Crazy that this is still going on. A doctor in a town nearby did a simmilar thing and got charged with neglect and a form of murder. That poor fellow ended his life not long after, meanwhile he was just trying to end someone's everlasting suffering. I'm happy we got hospice's now that actually do help you die if you meet the standarts.
Such a twisted world, they basically force you to end your life in an unhumane way.

I'm glad Dr Kevorkin did what he did. My mother died of cancer and I saw her suffer for a long time. The pain medication the Doctors gave her didn't really work and even in her sleep she was in pain. People don't understand what's it like to watch a loved one die in pain.
He's an interesting old man who strongly believed in what he did, I respect that. Answer tried to pin him with a couple of questions but Dr. Kevorkian is savvy.
i lived 5mins from his office. he had good intentions. he wasn’t “murdering” anyone. he was ending suffering as he said. have any of you guys seen the patient videos?? i have deeply research this mans life. he never wanted to hurt anyone but wanted to help. the videos of the patients they were in pain and begging for this. he made sure they had actually been suffering and in pain. i agree more than 1000%. patients families were with them most of the videos. he was honestly a good man with good intentions. he wanted to make a movement. if and when i am dying and in pain i will travel to a state that this is legal. i live in michigan. i have drove by where his office was. i feel him. This man is a hero not a criminal.
It's really sad that he had to do this covertly because the law wouldn't allow a patient to end their own suffering on their own terms.
Bottom line, if someone truly wants to end it all, they WILL. There is no shortage of tools of the trade. The idea of physician assisted suicide, is to make the process clean, painless, and hopefully cover bases. No bloody mess for someone to find ( which is traumatic for them ). No questions left unanswered. No frantically scribbled suicide note. And most importantly, no unnecessary pain. And just for legal safety reasons, have some sort of mandatory counselling before being allowed to seek it, and mandatory legal consultations to handle things like notorizing a will, handling funeral and burial / cremation arrangements, and so forth. And above all, the process can be aborted by the patient at ANY time. There's no reason this couldn't work.
I'm not a fan of the concept of suicide, myself. I think it's usually a waste, and often a permanent solution to a temporary problem. But this isn't exclusively true, and regardless, people are going to do it, anyway. And if so, I would hope they could at least have a proper channel to go through to make it easier on all parties involved.

not all of us like it here in life. some of us are missurable on a daily basis and have tried to change it and failed every time. some of us have nobody to love, nobody to talk out our problems with. and some of us are missurable because of an illness. and they take drugs to hide the fact that it hurts. idk, its a touchy subject but i see where hes coming from. just my opinion
