I hated butch in 2017 but by 2018 I realized how big of mistake we made with asking him to leave. I don't know where we would be this year if butch still had the job but I know Josh is leaps and bounds above Pruitt.

Let’s not forget the man had Alvin Kamara at RB2, while the RB1 said Kamara should start. He was an awful coach who loved to waste talent. If he didn’t have Dobbs we’d lose almost every game. After dobbs left, he had the worst season in TN football history. How do you guys like him????

He got a lot of high calibur recruits in his time at UT, but managed to fail to get any of them to live up to their expectations. Either by way of alienating them off the roster, or being unable to put them in a position to succeed.

Jones has issues that can't be explained. Hitting players, sitting Kamara on the pine to watch Hurd play after Hurd asked to be moved which caused Hurd to quit in the Georgia game . I think him letting Janzen go was a problem . Bob Shoop was a bad fit . Janzen was not the problem the Offense (Garantano) struggled and McBride showed better instincts out of highschool than Garantano after redshirt freshmen year

After back-to-back loses to Texas A&M and Alabama after starting 5-0 in 2016, I still said that Tennessee would win the SEC East. But after the 2016 loss to South Carolina, I knew that not only was Tennessee not winning the division but I also knew that Butch Jones wasn't going to remain as Tennessee's head coach for long. What happened over the next 3 years after the loss to South Carolina?
Tennessee did not win the SEC East, they lost to Vanderbilt three consecutive times, they played in the 2016 Music City Bowl vs Nebraska, they went on to lose to South Carolina in 2017 and 2018 (another 3 consecutive year lose), in 2017 they finished 4-8 (0-8 in conference play) marking the first time in program history Tennessee finished a season with 8 losses. By the time they lost to Missouri in 2017, it lead to perhaps the most embarrassing problems of this time period from 2016 to 2019 for Tennessee.
After the 2017 loss to Mizzou, Butch Jones was fired with two games left, (as mentioned) Tennessee finished the season 4-8 (first 8 loss season for Tennessee), the Greg Schiano fiasco where, just as he was about to be hired, Tennessee fans didn't want him as the coach because they thought he knew about what Sandusky did at Penn State (even though Schiano was vetted and clearly had no knowledge about it), the Athletic Director (who wasn't even on the job for a full year) ends up fired, and once 2017 was over Tennessee had a losing streak against the other 13 SEC Teams.
The situation at Tennessee was so bad that when they were looking for a new head coach, no one wanted to go near the program. Mike Leach, Dan Mullen, and other head coaches didn't want to be the coach. Those coaches eventually went somewhere else.
2018 seemed to be a signal of a better day for Tennessee with a win at Auburn making it the first time in nearly two years Tennessee won a conference game (as well as Tennessee's first win over an SEC West Opponent since 2010) but they still lost to both South Carolina (by that point 0-7 vs Will Muschamp) and Vanderbilt (making them 2-5 vs the 'Dores since the 2012 meeting and 8-6 vs the 'Dores since the 2005 meeting) for a third consecutive year.
2019 started off as the continuation of what had been going on since the 2016 South Carolina game. They started off 0-2 with back-to-back home loses against Georgia State and BYU, then became 1-4 by October 5th. But the next week on October 12th, they defeated Mississippi State (making it the first time since 2008 they defeated Mississippi State, their first win vs an SEC West foe in Neyland since 2010, and the first time since 1992-2008 Tennessee defeated SEC West opponents in consecutive seasons).
After the October 5th loss to Georgia, they won 6 of their last 7 finishing 2019 with a 7-5 record, plus a Gator Bowl victory over Indiana making them 8-5 (5-3 in SEC Play). This gave the Tennessee Volunteers their first Winning season in three years. Then, during the Covid year of 2020, Tennessee went 3-7 in an all-SEC schedule year. To top it all off, after discovering some NCAA violations, Jeremy Pruitt was fired after three seasons and a record of 16-20 which also saw the retirement of 3+ year AD Philip Fulmer.
5th head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers since the start of the 2010 season was UCF head coach Josh Heupel who came along with UCF's AD Danny White. In their first season 2021, Neyland Stadium was revamped with LED lights and Wrestlemania-style pyrotechnics fired at the top of the stadium and in 2022 a brand new jumbotron opposite the existing one with more renovations to come in the next few years. Additionally, Tennessee's offense in 2021 was one of THE best scoring offenses in the SEC and in the nation and one of the best overall offenses, period. Sure there was the embarrassing conclusion to the Ole Miss game and what the fans did, check out my reply to this comment, as well as the heartbreak loss to Purdue in the 2021 Music City Bowl (becoming Tennessee's first bowl game loss since the 2010 Music City Bowl which also had some controversy towards the end). But the Tennessee Volunteers still finished the 2021 season 7-6, making it the first time since 2010 under Derek Dooley to go to a bowl game under a first year head coach and the first time since 2009 under Lane Kiffin Tennessee finished with a winning record under a first year head coach.
It's been a struggle for Tennessee following the 2016 South Carolina loss. But things just might get better.

his mismanagement of players was what ultimately led tp his demise at UT. He had all the pieces but mismanaged them. The best UT played was when Jaylen Hurd ran well, taking the pressure off of Josh Dobbs. This allowed Dobbs to shine, but also put a spotlight on him. When Hurd left, all the pressure fell on Dobbs. Tennessee suffered because of this. We beat Florida and Georgia in the same season but lost to Kentucky and Vandy.

  • @johncate9541
    @johncate9541 3 роки тому +1

He beat Georgia and Florida in the same season and then didn't win the SEC East! How is that possible, unless your interim coach gets replaced by a guy coming back too soon from a heart attack? (I'm sure you get the reference.)
Butch can recruit, but he isn't a very good in-game coach. Tennessee is a place that should be successful, should be able to sneak in an SEC East title here and there, but you have to be able to recruit AND coach them. What happened in the 1990s when they were national title contenders happened when Bama, Auburn, LSU and Georgia were all coached by bums. A lot of Tennessee fans don't understand how much that matters. UT's in-state recruiting base is poor, and Fulmer and his coaches in the 1990s were picking off talent due to lack of competition. When those schools got better coaches, it got a lot tougher. Fulmer still got to a few more SECCG's in the 2000s but not enough to make boosters happy.

Better than Jerome Pruitt, and that's saying something. But he blew too many leads late and the Vandy game where they had a chance to go to the SEC championship to play Alabama....all they had to do was take care of business in that last game, and that team was better than that. He didn't recruit a QB to fit his system after Dobbs and it showed...not to mention the DC from Penn State was a bad hire.

    • @ptclaus98

He lied to recruits and didn't adapt. He never hired a decent QB coach, and only once hired the best available man for open assistant positions, usually sticking to coaches he'd worked with previously. He also didn't realize his offense worked best with a dual threat QB who ran the ball. But he loved to have slow QBs run the option. If Justin Worley doesn't get hurt, who knows if Dobbs even sees the field? But if Dobbs never played, Jones would have been fired by the end of 2015 at the very latest.

He fell sobbing because he jumped too high and landed on his ankle.
They lost to OU because the offensive mastermind couldn’t think of ways to drive the ball vs a mediocre big 12 defense. UTs defense was on the field all damn day.
His defenders SUCKED at tackling and the DBs always looked confused.
The offense was good at moments then moments like 3rd and 8 vs Arkansas, PA bubble screen.......

Butch's offense doesn't run at this level without a Josh Dobbs style QB. Since QBs like that don't grow on trees, he really needed to ditch it. He's hard headed, and didn't. Second, he is an atrocious game day coach. Terrible. He needs a guy in the booth or something to help manage the game, he's not cut out for it. Lastly, developing players and stop putting square pegs into round holes.
I'm interested to see what he does at Arkansas State. Did he learn something with Saban at Bama? Has he overcome his shortfalls? Or is he going to go back to running his non P5 winning offense at the level that State plays at. If its the latter, he'll be lucky to see a P5 offer ever again. He may well have returned to a level he's best suited for.
