As a Tennessee alum, I was fully expecting to be angry as a hornet about this video. But I watched it all and good on you. It is very respectful of the program, with thoughtful insight, great game video, historical knowledge and even a little boost for the Tennessee fan to keep their heads up. I was there during the Andy Kelly years. We were very good and a Saturday at Neyland was as good a college football experience that you can get. So sad to see empty seats and people leaving in the second half now. No fair-weather fan here though, but it's hard to pick up the pieces of this broken orange heart. Georgia State at home as a 26 point favorite, and we should have lost worse than we actually did. Pretty much seen in all, but I never expected that. Anyway, I digress. Good job on the video.
I'm amazed how David Cutcliffe leaving for Ole Miss and Duke is never mentioned for our downfall. He only helped recruit, coach and call the plays for Heath Shuler, Peyton Manning and Tee Martin. Cutcliffe is the main reason Peyton came to Knoxville. Cutcliffe also greatly improved Erik Ainge as well as our offense. Letting David get away was much, much worse than firing Fulmer.
As a player from 06 to 09 I was there when we were winning and then thru the instability of what followed the 2007 season...its really sad bc we worked hard af everyday and was taking Ls
Yeah, a program can't survive playing head coach musical chairs like they did. I can only say you guys did your best in an unstable environment that couldn't get settled.
I can tell you what happened. The Haslams is what happened to Tennessee football. Get them and their money out of knoxville and the program will bounce back.
I mean what Jerry Jones is to tje Dallas cowboys the Haslam's are to UT. They dictate who is hired and fired because they have dumped so much money into the university.
I’m a proud Tennessean who loves TN football games on Saturday. There have been many mistakes on different levels in the football program. I wear my orange 🧡proud on game day though. I’m being patient and hopeful for our young men who represent us.
Perfect ending and great video. You hit the nail on the head. It's the AD (the whole department) and boosters. True fans will stick it out. I suffered through the 90s -07 with Clemson. Good Luck!!! At least beat the coots.
Watching Clemson mollywhoop Bama in the natty last year was the closest thing I got to seeing a team in orange do them dirty. I just squinted really hard and pretended Trev and Higgins were playing for us hahaha. All love to y'all though, one hell of a program they got over there!
You should have mentioned that Fulmer was fired immediately before he would complete the number one recruiting class in the nation. A class that included Taj Boyd who basically created the current Clemson program with his play.
I still wish Tennessee had hired mike leach. Yes it would’ve sucked seeing that winning streak end against Tennessee but it would have not only been great for Tennessee but also for the sec.
Leach’s personality would not work at a major SEC school. One bad year, he’d go nuts in the media, say crazy shit about the fanbase and then get fired. Great coach, but he’s been at non blue blood programs for a reason.
Tennessee v. Florida rivalry through first 12 matchups: Tennessee lead series 12-0-0 Since: Florida leads 28-8 Florida's tormenting of Tennessee is no doubt a part of the reason for their downfall.
Thanks for this video. I watched it for the 1st time 2 years ago and for some reason it popped backup on my suggestions today. Coach Josh shows a lot of promise. I am loving our hurry up offense.Tennessee gave the playbook to Alabama on how to beat Georgia.Their defense is incredible, but we hung the most points on them all season until the SCC championship game. It's looking like the championship game might be a repeat. Looking forward to how everything goes down next season. Go Vols!
We haven't worn those since 2017 as we have traditionalist in power. Orange home tops and white pants or white road tops and white pants. The grays were cool, and it was an exciting time when they were on the field but those days are long gone from Knoxville.
@Jake Smith What does being traditionalist about uniforms have to do with winning? Alabama is extremely traditionalist when it comes to their uniforms and it hasn't done anything to their ability to win. Tradition is an absolute must for certain programs especially ones that have been around longer than a century. Plus you don't have a clue how annoying the Butch Jones era was due to his oversight trying to mute the band with complete bullshit songs. I had read a few things where they were planning on phasing out the band more and more and that's just wrong. Fight songs played by the band and running through the T are traditions that should never change. If we still had Butch Jones there's no telling what other things he would've tried changing.
Yeah Ethan Waller, you could be that crappy Alabama team that only wears boring crimson and white with the player’s number on the helmet. That would be boring as hell to wear those and win 5 nattys in the last 11 years. I’ve heard that being an Alabama fan is a living hell.
Life long TN fan coming back to this awesome little documentary that does a great job explaining my internal pain. Things are looking so much better now. I hope those dark days are well behind us.
I remember when I lived in Nashville in the mid 90's. Georgia was struggling under Goff and Donnan and UT was getting all the GA high school recruits. John Adams wrote a piece in the Tennessean slamming UGA as a "Once Proud Program." Karma John Adams.
Let me start off by saying I am not a Tennessee fan. Saying that, I'll tell you that this is one of the best videos I have ever seen. How you took a very negative situation and made me feel good with optimism for that program is amazing to me. I remember the Glory Days seeing that I am 58 years old and I followed them through these current years because my boss at work is a Tennessee fan. I hope they get back to prominence because college football is better when Tennessee is fighting and has something to say about the SEC. As a Miami Hurricane fan, I understand the highs and I understand the Lows.
Appreciate the effort and most of your content is solid. Yet, you can NOT evaluate the fall of our football team without even mentioning Jimmy Haslam. He is the reason we are where we are. You were close man. And as far as where we are as a team today, we have around 60 freshmen and sophomores on our roster. This has to be highlighted. I do appreciate your optimism on sticking with our current coach and his staff.
I’m a Tennessee fan and I think Pruitt is still recovering from the shit that happened before. There’s a big gap in talent right now in the team but once some of these younger players he recruited get going I think we’ll be alright
Was Waiting for Cole Adams Video!!, definitely see the amount of work you put in!! Thank you for inspiring me on my UA-cam Journey!! Your an awesome UA-camr but even greater person!
Advaith you are one of the best people I have met so far and it was an honor being able to talk with you and about your journey! Keep working hard and doing what you love! Never let anyone else decide that for you.
as a Husker fan, i had the same thought. not even far off from Tennessee, hiring a former Raiders coach that was run out of the NFL lmao. and he could equally scold our fans for our lack of patience with Solich, whose only blemish was not being Tom Osborne and posting a 7-7 season in 2002 after losing his Heisman QB that helped take them to the Rose Bowl (of course, losing that was unacceptable because Husker fans would never accept a loss of any kind, much less in a championship game) but overall he was so much better than all the coaches that came after him. We did him dirty and I will always be ashamed of it for our fan base. Hopefully Frost can turn it around, some fans are already restless but most of us know it's going to take a long time to rebuild the culture and realize that top recruits don't want to go to a rebuilding program in Nebraska, they want to go to an every-year contender like Alabama, a storied franchise that still plays in big meaningful games like Ohio State, or a beautiful coastal city in California or Florida. they will only come if they believe in Frost and the program he's building, and believe they can get to the promised land and/or the NFL through Lincoln.
Give Pruitt some time programs aren’t built over night and second when nick saben was hired at bama they didn’t win a national championship in their first year so you gota give these programs time to build it dabo swinney 8 years to build Clemson into a power house and I believe In Pruitt I know he can do it
Yet again, Nick Saban went to a Sugar Bowl in his second season and had Alabama ranked 4th in the country before losing to Utah. It was obvious that he had Alabama on track to become a title contender. Jeremy Pruitt has not even managed to do what Nick did in his first season.
ImNotMad ButUR i appreciate you defending UT. Pruitt IS a good coach, however he’s a young head coach. And yea, he needs time to learn the ropes. But i I truly think if he’s given the time to prosper, he may have a statue on campus one day.
I told everyone, Derek Dooley is a bad idea. Everybody is like, give him a chance. Then after his second 5-7 season they were saying fire him and I was saying told you so.
The Vols having problems is an understatement. This video was posted between the BYU and the Chattanooga game and sounded like maybe they just had a shaky start. We did win against Chattanooga but that was only a win on paper as Chattanooga looked like a sloppy high school team. After what I saw yesterday against the Gators it's clear there is absolutely very little talent on the offensive team. All of it. From the line to the receivers to the backs, including Guarantano; the talent is not there. If it weren't for the defense, this wouldn't have even been a game worth playing for Florida. What stands out for me is the lack of talent in the players and lack of continuity in the coaching and office staff. Cole Adams, your are correct. Tennessee has hit rock bottom.
I’m an Atlanta Hawks fan and we used to be a consistently good team, but we didn’t win any titles in that winning stretch. We aren’t a good team now, but hopefully, Trae Young and John Collins can lead us back to the promise land in a few years from now.

in fairness to pruitt...tennessee is NOT washington state and TCU.....meaning there's no guarantee leach or patterson would have done here what theyve done there...BUT, that said...i dont think either of them wouldve lost to Ga St.....outstanding video
This video is spot on. The downfall definitely started after Tennessee fired Coach Phil Fulmer and Mike Hamilton chose Lane Kiffin over Gary Patterson, Brian Kelly, Mike Leach, and one that the video did not mention, Air Force's Troy Calhoun. When Kiffin left us out to dry right before signing day and left us with sanctions and recruits leaving, you almost couldn't get anyone of significance to come here. Instead of Dooley, Hamilton should have not pulled the trigger on a panic hire by hiring Derek Dooley. Instead, Assistant Coach Kippy Brown should have been allowed to be interim for a year to give us more time to get us a better coach. In 2012, I didn't know that Mike Gundy was interested in coming to Tennessee. I remember hearing that they talked and offered him a deal, but he stayed at Oklahoma State after getting a raise there. I remember several coaches saying they weren't interested because Dooley left the cupboard almost bare. And our top choice, Charlie Strong, ended up using the Vols to stay at Louisville with a pay raise. That is why we ended up with Jones. He was like our fifth choice, and the first one that said "Yes, I will take the job." In 2017, when Butch was fired, there were rumors that Tennessee were in talks with Gruden on being the new Head Coach. I knew Jon Gruden wouldn't come to Knoxville, but John Currie and the Administration should have came out and said that wasn't going to happen. And they should have put out feelers on who they were interested in. When it came out that Schiano was Currie's top choice and he was interested in the job, I remember like, "We could have done better, but Schiano, he's not a bad choice, either. He is an experienced and serviceable coach that could possibly turn things around." Then, when many Tennessee fans protested the hire and there was a huge backlash on social media and scared Currie into pulling out of the deal, I was telling friends, "Watch. This is not going to turn out well for the Vols as it was a bad look for our AD to back out of the deal with his top choice for Head Coach due to a vocal part of the rabid fan base. I knew we were going to get a Coach that wouldn't be as good as Butch was." And the way many of the fans reacted to the hire, that was also a bad look in the eyes of the media and rest of the World." I knew that the coaching search was going to be bad after that, but I nor anyone else anticipated how much worse and how embarrassing it was going to become. As far as hiring Pruitt, here is why I think Fulmer went after him and hired him. 1. He wanted to go the route of getting a coach from the Nick Saban coaching tree and see if he could get the next Kirby Smart. However, Pruitt wasn't a hot commodity like Kirby Smart was when Georgia hired him and Smart actually had more success as an Assistant than Pruitt. 2. The Administration and boosters wanted to go the cheap route instead of dumping a huge load of cash in the lap of a proven coach and that is another reason we ended up with Pruitt. And now, we see where that got us today.
@@jamesmoore464 I did this post over a year ago when we were still in bad shape. But we are number two in the country and ranked number one in the playoffs. We are definitely in a much better place now with Coach Josh Heupel. He has brought in a winning attitude and he has those kids believing in themselves and that they can beat anyone on Saturdays. Under Heupel's leadership, I will say that he has got us lightyears ahead of where I thought we'd be right now. And it is great that Tennessee football is fun to watch again and we are now back to being relevant as a College Football program.
Gotta give some credit to what happened this year on Rocky Top. A few months ago, who would think that the Tennessee football program would be on the way to a New Years bowl game. Give Coach Pruitt credit. He has turned this 2019 team around. Now with some successful recruiting, Tennessee has started to climb out of the pit. It’s going to be a challenge, a journey that will not be an easy one. But it seems as if Coach Pruitt has not only the grit and determination, but also right team of coaches to take on this challenge. Tennessee may just surprise everybody in the next year or two. Go Big Orange!
As a bama fan i recognize TN as our biggest rivals even over Auburn to me anyway but a good rivalry game needs both sides playing at their top level so I hope TN can get back on track gl.
The downfall of the Tennessee football program initiated when they fired one of the goats in Phillip Fulmer. I used to watch him in the early 2000s build the program and create a legacy with good staff. I felt bad when he left, he was the blueprint of the program.
Hey, now that we have coach hype and he has completed year one at 7-6, are you going to make a continuation video that picks up from here? Really good summary from our glory days to the Pruitt disaster. GBO!!
I'm not a Vols fan, but being on the outside looking in I have a perspective. Fulmer wasn't a bad coach, he just had a couple of bad seasons. Then there was Kiffin.....yeah, no.....it was a bad hire, there were better coaches available. Dooley was doomed from the start....when Kiffin left, the cupboard was pretty much bare as far as talent goes and he (Kiffin) took a few of the top recruits to SoCal with him. But the folks in charge didn't give Dooley enough time in my opinion. Jones got a better team than Dooley did, but he had to compete with Saban and others for the best recruits, not an enviable task. Now you have Pruitt. He's not a bad coach, and he is a very good defensive coordinator....he just needs the one thing those in charge haven't given others.....TIME.
@@tidefanyankee2428 Yeah, a couple of losing seasons in his last 4 years. How many good coaches can claim that. Tn was on the decline bec Fulmer started it.
@@robjohnson8861 I just think the firing of Fulmer was premature. I think he deserved one, maybe two more seasons, then if he couldn't have turned it around look for someone else. The thing is, Fulmer had relationships with a lot of high school coaches and recruiting is the life-blood of college football. That's a lot to throw away. I'm a Crimson Tide fan so I don't really have a dog in this fight. My personal opinion is the powers that be in Knoxville need to learn some patience and give their head coach a chance. Not everyone is a Nick Saban or Urban Meyer.
@@tidefanyankee2428 Yeah but, Fulmer had a losing record to Spurrier, Richt, Saban, Meyer, Miles, Tuberville, Paterno, Osborne, Solich, Weis the memphis coach, the wyoming coach Friedgen and my favorite Tyyyyrooonnne Willingham at Neyland when ND was unranked and TN was #9. Premature. No, not at all.
@@robjohnson8861 Looking back, would you rather have kept Fulmer until you could have found a better coach, or taken Kiffin, Dooley, and Jones? Kiffin was attractive to the Vols because they knew him and his dad Monty were a package deal. Dooley came in to clean up Kiffin's mess and the image of the team. Jones did OK but there were better coaches available as the video pointed out. Fulmer also won TN a NC.
I’m a BYU fan and we have had the same struggles in the last 20 years. But I had a ton of friends and family that said this was one of the best experiences they’ve had in following BYU around the country. Said the UT fans were the nicest ppl. Good luck to them

As a Tennessee fan and one who still lives here, you nailed it all in this video! I miss the glory days! From Peyton to Casey Clausen. That was Tennessee at their peak. You forgot to mention Tennessee being ranked #2 going into the SEC Championship against #20 LSU, if we win, we face Miami in the BCS title game, and we blew it. I believe that was 2001.
It’s all about the athletic director. Tennessee has everything to be a top program. As a BYU fan who watched Tennessee closely, they look like a really good team and program. Recruiting classss are top notch. Fans are A+. Best conference and stadium. But with all of that the athletic director(s) have not been able to effectively manage a program that has so much already in place. All they need is some proper management. I wouldn’t fire the Coaches just yet. I would take a good hard look at who knows how to manage a program like a business. Who has a passion for development, mentoring, philosophy, understands psychology, knows what makes things and people work and succeed? And finally, they must have integrity. Too many slime balls in college athletics today. Tennessee is a good pure program, loved the prayer before the game, fans are good hearted people. A guy like Lane Kiffin doesn’t represent your program and fan base. That’s step 1. Hire a solid AD who gets it. The rest falls into place after that. An AD who hires Lane Kiffin over Gary Patterson, doesn’t deserve to be AD. Lane Kiffin is a complete joke. I would never hire that guy to lead my team. Ever. When you hire for a CEO, you hire for passion, and you hire someone who has their own philosophy. Patterson, for instance, is about as passionate as they get. His defensive philosophy is top 3 in all of college football. Mike Leach is the offensive version of Patterson. Passionate, authentic, honest, genuine and above it all, a fantastic offensive coach, genius really. Kiffin is about as passion LESS as they come. He has no philosophy, he just rode the coat tails of the successes of the coaches he worked under. He’s like a Norm Chow clone. They get exposed when they can’t hide behind a coach who actually knows what they are doing. As foe this year, I still think TENNESSEE can make a bowl game, steal a win or two from some favorited SEC teams and clean up against vandy, UK, etc. hang in there Vols fans. After last week, seeing your program and team up close, I’ll be cheering for the Vols from here on out. Y’all made a fan out of me. Rocky top Tennessee.
You can throw Miami and Nebraska in there as of late. How much hype can ESPN give these two perennial underachievers? Neither has been any good since the beginning of the 21st century.🤷🏻♂️
Awesome video. Mike Hamilton truly made some baffling decisions. It's so frustrating seeing the coaches we passed on. Thanks for pointing out how the fans are staying loyal though. We lost to Georgia St. in the opener and yet Neyland was still loud and filled to the brim versus BYU the following week. We have a really special fan base, it's just unfortunate that we also happen to have a very vocal online contingent that seems to get everyone's attention (i.e. calling for Pruitt's head already). All in all, great video. Subscribed.
I definitely think Pruitt is our guy. Seeing him coach the game against Alabama really opened my eyes. They way that guy reacted showed me how much he really cares.

Interesting view point when you equate them to Jerry Jones.
The Haslams are what ruined Tennessee football.

You should have mentioned that Fulmer was fired immediately before he would complete the number one recruiting class in the nation. A class that included Taj Boyd who basically created the current Clemson program with his play.

Because the dumb fuck Haslams are pretty anti-Fulmer, not sure why because the guy won 75% of his games over a 15 year stretch.

I am loving our hurry up offense.Tennessee gave the playbook to Alabama on how to beat Georgia.Their defense is incredible, but we hung the most points on them all season until the SCC championship game. It's looking like the championship game might be a repeat. Looking forward to how everything goes down next season. Go Vols!

As an Oregon fan I must say, those grey unis are sick!
We haven't worn those since 2017 as we have traditionalist in power. Orange home tops and white pants or white road tops and white pants. The grays were cool, and it was an exciting time when they were on the field but those days are long gone from Knoxville.
Plazas Security Literally so nice!!! But “Tradition”😪😪😪
@@TheEthanWaller As long as Pruitt is our coach we wouldn't have them. Pruitt loves the old uniforms and said that they would only wear them.
Yeah Ethan Waller, you could be that crappy Alabama team that only wears boring crimson and white with the player’s number on the helmet. That would be boring as hell to wear those and win 5 nattys in the last 11 years. I’ve heard that being an Alabama fan is a living hell.

It’s silly to count Pruitt out already. You went in on him and then said you should keep him. This team will be fine with consistency.

2015. Before that, 2007.
I’m a Tennessee fan and I think Pruitt is still recovering from the shit that happened before. There’s a big gap in talent right now in the team but once some of these younger players he recruited get going I think we’ll be alright

I would love it if you did one of these for Nebraska! Great video man!
as a Husker fan, i had the same thought. not even far off from Tennessee, hiring a former Raiders coach that was run out of the NFL lmao. and he could equally scold our fans for our lack of patience with Solich, whose only blemish was not being Tom Osborne and posting a 7-7 season in 2002 after losing his Heisman QB that helped take them to the Rose Bowl (of course, losing that was unacceptable because Husker fans would never accept a loss of any kind, much less in a championship game) but overall he was so much better than all the coaches that came after him.

Yet again, Nick Saban went to a Sugar Bowl in his second season and had Alabama ranked 4th in the country before losing to Utah. It was obvious that he had Alabama on track to become a title contender. Jeremy Pruitt has not even managed to do what Nick did in his first season.

You should do the downfall of the Atlanta hawks or the Cleveland Cavaliers or the New York kniks

in fairness to pruitt...tennessee is NOT washington state and TCU.....meaning there's no guarantee leach or patterson would have done here what theyve done there...BUT, that said...i dont think either of them wouldve lost to Ga St.....outstanding video
He was like our fifth choice, and the first one that said "Yes, I will take the job."
In 2017, when Butch was fired, there were rumors that Tennessee were in talks with Gruden on being the new Head Coach. He is an experienced and serviceable coach that could possibly turn things around."
Then, when many Tennessee fans protested the hire and there was a huge backlash on social media and scared Currie into pulling out of the deal, I was telling friends, "Watch.
It got us to number 2 in the country you stupid bitch.

Go big orange. Hopefully soon it turns around again.
UT football started going downhill when they started spending all that money on stadium expansion instead of buying players like they used to.
HAHAHA! That's funny, man. Buying players is how a lot of NCAA programs operate. It's still freakin' funny.
No the downfall happened when Fulmer resigned and that’s when problems happened

Yeah we Tennesseans really hate loosing at football. Wars we win, but football games we haven’t won since 1998.
Vols fan here. You didn't say anything that I disagree with. We're in shambles.

As a fellow Tennessee fan, at least we are back now! GBO!!!🍊
Awesome video. Mike Hamilton truly made some baffling decisions. It's so frustrating seeing the coaches we passed on. Thanks for pointing out how the fans are staying loyal though.
