    Amazing how these headstones have survived for more than 200 years. Another well maintained cemetery.

    I wish the community would do upkeep on these ancient places. It’s all going to crumble away and be forgotten. Most of the skulls are quite comical I’m really surprised you didn’t get rain there🙃 it seems to follow you I enjoyed it greatly

      That is the nature of graveyards, all the ancient ones are underground, covered by farms and fields of crops, or under housing estates. The church is very rich, it is up to them to maintain their graveyards.

      @@janetpendlebury6808I agree. We have so many abandoned cemeteries being reclaimed that even in a heavily populated area. Some of them private property the community let go. The past is as mysterious as the future, and billions have gone before us without a trace.
      But also don't feel bad. Westerners don't realize we still have a very Victorian attitude towards death. Americans are absolutely ridiculous about it. We even consecrate places where someone died.

    I love the Scottish videos, cemeteries the most. My ancestors came to America from Scotland and settled in the mountains of Va. Tenn. Kentucky. The other half of me is Cherokee. There were and are a lot of us. Thanx for this video.

    Thanks for this. I was there two years ago and wanted to see the headstones that had the skulls with wings. I looked around for them but didn't see any of them. You found all three of them that I'd seen on some graveyard websites. Bravo!

    Really a beautiful and quiet place to roam. That church has surely stood the test of time. But all of those headstones are works of art. Incredible masonry, carvings and religious presentations. It is truly incredible to me how they have stood the test of time. So much history, it makes me wonder about my ancestors. My family surname is Kirkwood.

    Hello mate. Check out the old Cemetery on Durham rd in Gateshead. Oldest stone i saw there is 1820. Some interesting stones. Plus in Whicham 3 miles away, there is a very interesting old cemetery. Theres also an interesting one in Heworth. All have very old stones.

    I don’t mind the reuse of a grave where they continue on the back of the tombstone. At least it preserves the space, it’s a natural occurrence that bodies return to earth and make room for more but the memorial lives on. Currently in Western Australia they are ‘refurbishing’ grave spaces. Basically means they are getting rid of all traces and making room in the middle for more burials. In a country the size of ours, the fact that they are making out there’s not enough room is despicable. Particularly where, in Europe, some cemeteries are centuries old.

    • @janetpendlebury6808
      @janetpendlebury6808 Рік тому +1

      Which is why it makes sense to do away with burials, and have cremations etc instead.

    Anwoth Kirk is just along the road from Gatehouse of Fleet,where I was born and bred and still live, walked and played round this old Kirk yard many a time, it has many a Covenanters grave and is a great spot to play hide and seek. 😁

      Hop on over to New Orleans. Their cemeteries are very similar to what you see on this channel. Though admittedly, I haven't sen them since Katrina.😬
      That one, Boston, and Boot Hill cemetery in Tombstone are my favorites.

    Nice vid/tour Dan thx, some interesting looking ones there. Some of them old ones are real 'works of art'... another time another place. As an ancient graveyard enthusiast myself, I found it handy at one stage to learn how to read Roman numerals. They're handy enough to learn. I was curious to know what date that one was showing at 02:29. Turned out to be 1780.
    MDCCLXXX = 1780
    M = (1000)
    D = (500)
    C = (100)
    L = (50)
    X = (10)
    Yeah yeah, saying that... what have the Romans ever done for us? 🙂
    p.s. Loved 'The Wicker Man'. 👍 🖖

    What year is the church? Thank you- this is amazing. So idyllic and peaceful.
    The wings are taking the soul to heaven, the hour glass, skulls and crossbones are memento mori. These symbols are common on graves throughout post Reformation Scotland when it was seen as too ‘papist’ to put overtly Christian symbols or representations of saints etc on tombstones. Compass is masonic.

    It's sad there are no flowers on anyone's graves, but I'd be careful visiting old graveyards if I were you, bc something may follow you home ur not prepared for.

      Most of the graves are a couple of hundred years old, probably no living relatives to put flowers on them.
