I used to hang out at Record Town, a Fort Worth record store owned by Stephen's father, Sumter Bruton, and it was there I first met Stephen. Later, in 1976, I was working at Musicland in Northeast Mall, and I accompanied a friend who sold a telecaster guitar to Stephen who was then playing guitar for Kris Kristofferson. Stephen casually mentioned that his band would be performing at a popular Fort Worth eatery on West Berry, just a few blocks from Record Town. After we left Stephen, my friend told me that Stephen and his band were Kristofferson's backing band in A Star Is Born, which was the #1 movie in the country at that time. My wife and I and my best friend and his wife went to see Stephen's band who performed as Little Whisper & the Rumor. It was all very surreal. Incidentally, in 1970, Stephen auditioned to play lead guitar for Van Morrison, but that job was won by my dear friend, John Platania, whom I met in 1991through Don McLean.
Met Stephen at the Bedford Blues Fest in the late 90's. The last time I saw Stephen was in Kerrville where he was playing in 2005. I was so honored when he walked off the stage and walked up to me and hugged me, happy to see me. He was such a genuine person. It was an honor to have met him and his music is still part of my life to this day. Again, thank you for the honor and the gift you have given us Stephen.
Just watched "Bloodworth" with Kristofferson, Val Kilmer & Dwight Yoakam and heard this beautiful song. Had forgotten all about it but the lyrics brought it all home. Thanks so much for making this wonderful video and posting!
K- Thanx for posting this song. It brings back the memories of myself as a much young girl who once danced in the rain with a beautiful boy..."God moved in that moment" and i may have lost him to war, but this song brings him back. Thank you so much!
One of the finest songwriters ever to put words to the heart's ear. Too bad so few got to see him play at his passion. Do someone a favor and turn them on to his CD "Spirit World" and see if they can keep from crying during "Just a Dream" or laughing during "Acre of Snakes". The devoted music community he lived in misses him tremendously.
Richard... I had known Stephen since high school in Ft Worth and we crossed paths many times - different bands in Ft Worth, Kris and Rita while I was with Joan Armatrading and played across the street in Las Vegas - me with Dolly and him with Kris. His writing started hitting the stride in the 80s with What It Is and he said Kris would critique his songs and it felt like going to songwriter college. I played on the Spirit World album and shortly after that moved to Austin from LA (where we both lived from the mid 70s) and even had him on some of my gigs. I loved everything he wrote and worked with him for several years and several projects in Austin and on the Delbert Cruise. I was at his house when he left to go with T Bone to LA to work on Crazy Heart. We all miss him but his songs are brilliant. Thanks for you comments and appreciation...
@@RedYoungOne You were one of the lucky humans walking to get to be musically connected to Stephen during his time here on earth. Of all the musicians I met playing in Austin (1981-2004), he is one I tried to see every time he played at the Saxon Pub. My dream before leaving Austin was to have the honor of meeting him, let alone getting to play with him. We traveled in different circles and I missed my chance, as if there was ever a chance to play with you guys. "Spirit World" is my favorite CD and your playing is excellent on it. "Yo Yo" , "Spirit World" & "Hate to Love" are on my forever rotation when I want to remember how great the Austin music scene was back then. Thank you for your contribution to my sanity. I rarely get to express my gratitude for the lifelong joy I get from music played at such a high caliber of perfection. Lifelong players like us never quit, we're just passing through. I do hope you're still at it in some form or fashion.
@@richardnordenberg3005 Still am. Doing a lot of organ trio, duo, quartet and some piano stuff too. I heard the great Steve Simpson do justice to this superb song - he drew my attention to the passing of Stephen Bruton (ouch) - 'and the angels all cried'
Awesome song. And female backing vocal too. I watched the movie with this song with Kris Krisoferson, Val Kilmer and Dwight Yoakam. I felt in love in this song.
Thank you very much for posting this, its one of my favorite songs. "What makes you grow old is replacing hope with regret." Such a beautiful song, it moves me every time I listen. Happy birthday Stephen, may you forever rest in peace.
Yes, Stephen and Kris were friends and bandmates for many years. Kris had small parts in several movies with Kris and Willie. Stephen was also nominated for an Oscar for his work on the movie "Crazy Heart".
So nice. I befriended a fellow named Harold Klein, who had toured doing lighting for Kris when Stephen was Kris's guitar man, they were friends. Harold died suddenly, on Valentine's Day a coupld of years ago, and in May, Stephen passed on.
Stephen's music is all over youtube. If he isn't singing it then it's Malford Milligan and /or The Resentments. I'm sure there are others out there keeping the music alive

Brilliant song, one of Stephen's best
I first heard this song on the soundtrack to a movie with Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson.
