Chasing the ND&W with the Leaning Locomotive Santa Fe GP20 PREX 3001

- PREX 3001 a EMD GP20 still in Santa Fe livery pulls a 7 car cement train on the Napoleon Defiance and Western Railway. I "chased" them Antwerp Ohio to near Woodburn Indiana. This railroad was formerly the Maumee & Western ( MAW ) and was infamous for it's bad track conditions. As you can see much of the line now has ballast again! When I first started filming it was mud and rotten ties holding the 100 year old rail in place. The last scene of the video show one of the rougher patches that still remain, where some heavy locomotive leaning can be filmed!

I'm glad there are plans to fully renovate this railroad
The sound that those rails and ties were making sure made it interesting. 👍
Wow...excellent chase and catch, Scott. The engineer seemed to be adjusting his position to lean the other side to balance the train. ha ha Just kidding. The aerial shot was so cool. Love it. Keep up the great work my friend. - Drew
Thank you Drew! I'd imagine it is awkward on the back riding the lean!
Scott Taipale - You’re welcome.
Great video, keep them coming! cool old line. This is Railroading!
The AT&SF (Santa Fe) ceased operation 25 years ago and no one has gotten around to painting locomotive 3001! Guess we can be thankful for procrastination and frugalness!
If they can't afford to fix the road bed under their track then I doubt they could afford a repaint. Hell they couldn't even afford to patch out Santa Fe on the sides.
I'm glad there are some to be found!
There's one in Malden, Indiana at the grain elevator there.
Jason Platco I believe the locomotive is actually being leased from a leasing company.
@@stampycatfan01lol It's not but it doesn't matter. A lot of companies don't care. I mean there's no law against using it as is and it's not like you can just run into any yard, drive a locomotives off the track, and steal it for your own use.
outstanding filming .
Awesome video! I really like the old style Santa Fe!
Thank you! I prefer the warbonnet colors but glad these are still around!
@@ScottTaipaleRail That is exactly how I feel about Santa Fe colors.
Definitely the best video yet I’ve seen of this Railroad! Excellent work :)
Thank you very very much!
I was just watching European trains this weekend and happened to catch this today................................................I had no idea. I also caught your videos of the NDW "blasting down"... yikes.
A pretty scary ride in spots. Fascinating. Thanks for sharing.
I sure wouldn't want to be on it. Thanks for watching Ron!
Quality footage!
Excellent video Scott! Never mind the tracks, just keep the trains moving. But what if . .? Well let's hope no trains get derailed. Always nice to make money, but it should be done safely. Keep that camera running. Always enjoy your videos. Professional grade indeed!
It used to be a weekly occurrence to have a car jump off the tracks or some part of the rail bed fail. They cleaned it up fairly well so far
Thank you! I enjoy making them!
Cant wait to see more track rehab videos
Hopefully another one soon
Really nice professional drone work and video Scott. You should be proud of your work.
Great video - love the drone shots and the close ups - I feel like I am standing right there watching this amazing train come towards me - fantastic!!
Thank you very much!!
Nice catches! I like the Santa Fe Blue Bonnet paint scheme a lot as well as the Nathan K3LA Air-Horn! Really nice!
I enjoyed watching
Thank you!
Awesome!! Thanks for posting...
Thanks for watching!
This list of everything cool with your video is too long so I'll just add it to my Playlist.
Hats off to your little helper 👍
Thank you! Some people like them long and some like me to speed up the footage.
Nice catches of the local.
I have relatives in Defiance, and although I didn't see any NDW trains, I sure saw the track.
Wrong time to visit I guess
Great video Scott 👍👍keep up the great work and stay safe out there my friend
Thank you, you also!
Another great video. Your drone action is really great.
Thank you!!
Great shots! I really enjoyed listening to the horn of that old loco! So cool to see a pice of history like this one still hard at work! Cool shot of it leaning too... that would concern me a bit if I was the crew haha!
Thank you!!
They better had replace that section of rail that's makin' her lean! Although they've come along way since I started following them, they still have a ways to go...another good one my friend! 👍👍
Thank you! I do not see rail replacement in their near future.
Awesome video Scott!!!
Thank you
Fantastic Santa Fe roailroad vídeo Mr Scott thanks México city
Thank you!
Had me pinching my butt cheeks together a few times hanging on to my chair. Wonderful footage. Thanks for posting. When's the next update?
What a great catch I think the GP20 is one of the rarest EMD Locomotives in the world correct me if I'm wrong
Sd18m's are fairly rare. Along with GP39's.
They didn't have high production numbers. We have 5 working in Ohio that I am aware of, 3 on this railroad and 2 on RJ Corman
@@ArturoRailProductions very wrong. *Probably* the rarest would be the RS1325, of which 2 were built. Remaining? Theres a few that with only one left, the E7, the high hood SD35, to name a few
@@josephjoestar3275 I'm in Springfield, IL, where the RS 1325s were in the fleet of Chicago & Illinois Midland, which became Illinois & Midland. At some point before Genesse & Wyoming was purchased they got reassigned elsewhere in the G&W empire.
Scott Taipale there’s 4 GP20s on the NDW now. Prex 2026 and Prex 3001 are both In Santa Fe Bonnet colors and Prex 2045 and prex 3054 are in the black and yellow colors
Cool video
Thank you
Great video!!!
Thank you
@@ScottTaipaleRail Your welcome!!!
that aint a railway , that's a roller coaster
That horn sounds like Morse code!
One of these days R.J. Corman is going to have a rescue job on that rough section of track. Them maybe management will have wished they had spent a few maintenance money rather than buying a new/used engine.
Sure does! I'm not sure which company is their on call derailment services provider!
A. They're pouring money into the line, what doesnt go to crew payments/maintenance on the engines is going to the track
B. They've had these GP20s for years.
Are they ever going to repair or replace the tracks so trains can move faster and safer?
Hi I'm putting together a UA-cam Video on the GP 20. Would it be ok if I used some of this footage?
Voice of Stan roy in Glenview, IL : Well uh um! If That Lack up Payment to That Yard Propety Goes Well! & The 2nd Tender b GTW 5629A!
Wow! I always wonder, is the short term risk worth the reward
I guess?
Is it my imagination that they have picked up some speed on the ballasted sections of track?
They do run a couple miles an hour faster on the level spots
The last scene - where is that? In case I can take a summer road trip. What days do they work?
With the windmills in the background it has to be near Antwerp Ohio. Not sure if west near the state line or east towards Cecil.
Did you walk alongside them for the entire route while you shot the video? Lol...
Haha I could have
They really hate that horn.
Who does?
Tanks Brasil 😎😎😎 M 11:00 derrailament😬😬😬😬😬😬
The main light on top of train is burned out. Gotta replace it
They still haven't
I hope they never paint it. Santa Fe had the most iconic paint schemes.
Hopefully not.
FRA violation not even a minute into the video....nice
FRA violation is the inproper horn sequence for crossings
Make The AT&SF free again. #screwwarrenbuffett
