205 Gti deserved to be on the 90´s too!! This piece of art has marked two decades until to be a classic hot hatch. Was so wanted and selling in the end of the eighties as in the early nineties.
I drove both the 1984 (85 model) Kadett GSi 1.8i 115ps and the 1989 Kadett GSi 16v. The 16v was a beast back in those days even smashing the vaunted Golf II GTI 16v and G60 models.
I was a kid in the 80s and there was a guy over the road with a mk2 Ford Escort rs2000 and I always thought that it was the best until my best mates brother turned up in a bright red fiesta xr2i with the pepperpot alloys at which point I thought it was the best thing since sliced bread. Primarily because he took us all out for a ride in it. Nice video that brings back a lot of memories. Cheers
I remember the '80's well. I rented a 205 GTI for 10 days very shortly after they came out. Loved it, brilliant to drive. Few years later, I bought a Golf MK2 16V. Not brilliant to drive, and had to be revved out to make it go. The standard Mk2, for all practical purposes was the better car, and save quite a few quid. As I recall, the XR3/XRi Fords were not really considered to be 'hot hatches'. Nor the XR2. Plastic, stickered pretenders.
Christopher Bell Totally agree. I stumbled upon a 205gti as my first car after intending to get a mk2 golf gti... it started a life long obsession and I've never not owned a 205 gti since passing my test over years ago. Currently own one of the very few 205 Dimma Signatures and the amount of comments it gets from people with fond memories of those days is amazing. For me, it's not a case of nostalgia for 80s cars, they were the best from a time when raw handling and individuality ruled the roads.
Nice quick car's for the 80s I've got a 1.9 Gti Pug but not the 205 it's the 309. People didn't like them as much but they are rare now and handled better than the 205 Gti.

***** well, probably he was bad at it driving, because, the swift revs so high you have to be pretty precise with the gear changes, and launching it was quite hard compared to the torquier fiestas. also, maybe his engine was not in very good shape, or maybe it was a swift "GT" the version for north america, which was heavier and less powerful and had a longer gearing and it was quite slower than the Europeans or Japanese ones the fact that from a rolling start i can keep up with my scirocco up to 180 with a 384000kms stock 1993 swift gti should give you some indications, also, dont forget, the swift was crap in straight line compared to the cornering performance, i honestly dont care about acceleration as much as i do for cornering and feeling. also my fiesta had to be rebuild at 180000kms the swift is still running and the engine was never opened and i do a lot of track days and mountain roads with it, i just had to replace the clutch once. to be honest, i wouldnt consider ANY modern hatchback hot, yeah, they may be faster than 80s and 90s hatches, but they are much more boring, i would consider the fiesta i had or the swift, or other 90s hatches ive owned way more "hotter" than modern ones. sorry for the long text

Chrysler's hot-hatch entry was the Dodge Omni GLH.
Ha ha! I had to go back and look - you're right! Well, it's easy to see what happened. The car was bought in Britain or Ireland by an American and imported to Washington State in the USA. Washington State requires front and rear plates, but the owner must have gotten an exemption to put a French plate on the front to accentuate the car's French origin. Peugeots haven't been sold legally in the U.S. since 1991, and the 205 was never sold here at all, but they can be imported privately and modified to American standards - provided the car is at least 25 years old.
My mum in late 80s early 90s had a while MK2 xr2 D819KYG she looked after it that well my best mate bought it off her after years of asking she replaced it with a white H reg XR3I we both preferred the XR2
The C20XE in the Opel Kadett GSI (or in the rebadged 'British' Vauxhall Astra GTE) delivered 150 BHP. The 20XE had 156. 20XE is hard to find nowadays where as the C20XE lies around every corner. The 1988 VW GTi 16v was the best of them all. I bought one slightly used in 1989. A bright red 5 speed. It took over 250,000 miles of abuse, the only real problem was keeping tires on it. It came with Pirelli P7s, and would not handle well with anything else. The P7 is a very expensive tire with a very short life span. You really couldn't ask for anything more in a FWD car.
Literally looks at footage of a G60 and doesn't even mention that its a different version, just mentions the big bumpers, or didn't mention rallye or even rs turbo
