What a decade to grow up. Transformers, Amiga 500, Powell Peralta skateboards, Tamiya, Raleigh Burners, The A-Team The Lost Boys, Moonlighting and my neighbour’s Golf GTI that I lusted after, ( as well as Cybill Shepherd )
First rule of the attractive ladies of the time is never look at them now, and instead just remember them from the past when they were in their prime. Like Daisy Duke out of The Dukes of Hazard, or Pam Ewing out of Dallas. I bet Commander Wilma Deering out of Buck Rodgers in the 25th C (Erin Gray) still looks ding dong though ... Maybe, I dare not look.
Born in 1960 this era of cars were really up my street. 2 mates had an XR3 and a 205GTI and I was very very very jealous. So much so I bought myself a Toyota Celica Liftback first one with twin round headlights followed by a square headlight in metallic blue with chrome wheels. I loved it and although not as fast as the aforementioned it just looked fabulous. However chrome wheels rust and I spent a lot of time with duraglit especially in winter. The 205 on your list is my pick as it was dead right from the get go. Fast enough great handling and fun but the design is truly awesome. I got my hands on a XS 1.4 once and even that was brilliant. Great work Damian 👏👏👏
Absolute agreement with 9 and 10. Had two number 9. What I'd do for those days again. I've also always been obsessed with 288 GTO. Never seen one in the flesh. I'd faint. Brilliant video.
Fantastic list Damian, my driving instructor had a 1.6 gti and she didn’t message and you putting your foot down occasionally, absolutely loved it and managed to get a 1.9 a few years later and still think it in my top 3 of most engaging cars I have ever driven🤗
Great choice. I had a Fiesta XR2 Mk 2 in black. Didn’t last very long with an 18 year old me behind the wheel. My friend had a 205 GTI and Renault 5 GT Turbo. I love the Mk 1 Golf GTI’s. I had a mk 2 Golf GTI 8v. I currently drive a merc 320 CLK convertible. 1999. It has hammer wheels. Needs a lot of love now. I love the hammer body lines on it though.
Great video. I was born in 1977 and 10 years later when a cool dude down my road turned up in a 944 turbo, I was hooked on Porsche ever since. Owned both 205 GTI’s loved both of them, the 1.9 was more fun and noisier, was white with yellow trim inserts.I would own any 944 in a heartbeat and the mk1 MR2 is just perfect
Great video. Had a 205 1.9 and 2.8 Capri, great cars. My favourite from the eighties was the TVR 350i, best sounding car ever. Can still remember every time I saw/heard one.
Some great 80's cars on that list. In the 90's, I was fortunate enough to own a Peugot 205 GTI 1.9 which was then replaced by Porsche 944 Turbo S. The 205 GT1 was huge fun like driving a go kart though the handling on the limit was a bit vicious and the build quality was crap. My 944 Turbo S was mildly modded so producing close to 300bhp (up from 250) handled beautifully and very quick on boost though the turbo lag was epic. My Mum owned a Saab 900 Turbo in the late 80's soon after I passed my driving test and I thought this was a really cool car and a huge upgrade on the Austin Metro she owned previously.
Very close to my list tbh, although I really came into cars, metaphorically, steady up lads, in the 90s. I would skip the Saab, I like the 9000 a bit more. A ferrari 308 GTS would be a good call. A DeTomaso Pantera too. Some sort of citröen would get in there also. All that would be needed for the futurama 80's garage would be a general mechanic's head in a jar, you would need the period specific knowledge. If you get a Countach I'm pretty sure you level up the 80s by default. 5000s white on white, mmmmhhhh.
Damien, agree about the 288 GTO, my all time favourite Ferrari. Probably not a coincidence we were born in the same year. Regarding Niki Lauda (also my all time favourite driver), apparently the story was that he wanted a GTO about a year after they were all built and sold and he managed to persuade Enzo to have one made specially made for him. If I could own any GTO ever made, it would be that one.... I think it is in the USA now.
Great episode, I really enjoyed that. Please could you do some new Watch reviews. You always make good content on both channels. Thank you for the entertainment! Lawrence
Good trip down memory lane. The F40 will Always be the one but for the more affordable ones, I always remember us Italians lusting over the Integrale ! World Rally Champions.
Some pretty spectacular cars on the list. I grew up in 1960s UK. Only the E Type jaguar stands out for me. Born same year it came out. As for the Australian cars. HSV from Holdens and 1971Ford GTHO 351 Cleveland V8 stand out. Thanks for the memories.
What a pleasure to see you do an 80s video. Amazing content as always. I really hope to see you in Japan one day. I would love to take you around and see a few collections here
I ve neither been in one, nor have driven it and I m somehow convinced the 205 gti is likely to be the better car, but I d still pick the Lancia Delta HF... I d chose at least one of these two over any kind of sports car of the time. If very late 80s, rather 90s would be an option, my dad s first Porsche (964) would be my top pick...and yes, he still owns and drives it, sometimes with me as the passenger feeling like a little kid and for once happier being driven than driving myself. I can count the times I ve driven it with my two hands and that s not sad but part of the magic. What actually strikes me more than the cars of the 70s and 80s is that ppl like my dad who happened to race in the late 70s still have a mastery and ability to read a car quicker than my generation...and I was told to be really good at reading the car, finding faults in the setup etc but it pales in comparison tbh.
As a teenager growing up in the eighties, I had four posters on my bedroom wall: an F40, a 288 GTO, a Testarossa and a Countach. Four completely different shapes and yet all absolutely stunning masterclasses of automotive design. I wonder if teenage boys still put posters up today and if so, of which cars. Pretty sure they will never be as iconic as the cars I grew up lusting after. Excellent episode as always!
No Porsche Turbo with whale tail? Outrageous! Or maybe your boys bedroom was small like mine. Being from oop north my bedroom was at the end of a pit shaft !
Ahhhh, so many fond memories. For me, Porsche 959, Sierra Cosworth, 911 930. But these were in your second list. So similiar thoughts. Then if they count Escort RS2000 ('79 count?), Porsche 911 964C2 ('90) and Porsche 944 S2 (no turbo 3.0l NA - awesome car).
Great cars. Of those 80s I owned back in the day, my Mk1 Golf GTi and Mk2 Astra GTE were good, but my faves were a mk1 Suzuki Swift GTi and an 85 Alfa GTV6. Just wonderful
Lessee...it's a little after 2 pm here now in the States. Six hours ago I was at an old schoolmate's father's home about a mile and a half from me. 205 is the biz!!!
The 80s was the best ever decade until the 90s.
I did say (probably about 50 times haha) that you should get a 205 GTi. Now is your chance! Please buy that white one and if you are out in your Ferrari's I will happily drive it around for you. I'll even pay for my own petrol. Thank you in advance, sir.
👍🏻👍🏻
No Sierra RS Cosworth?!?
Honorary mention
Embarrassing I didn’t see the very end … 😅
I’m pretty sure the Ruf was based on the Carrera 3.2 not the turbo.
Yet NO MG Metro, not even a mention 😂
