Ani DiFranco was born in Buffalo, New York, to Elizabeth and Dante DiFranco, who had met while attending MIT. She started playing Beatles covers at local bars and busking with her guitar teacher, Michael Meldrum, at the age of nine.
DiFranco's guitar playing is often characterized by a signature staccato style, rapid fingerpicking and many alternate tunings. She delivers many of her lines in a speaking style notable for its rhythmic variation. Her lyrics, which often include alliteration, metaphor, word play and a more or less gentle irony, have also received praise for their sophistication.
She has continued touring through 2011. As of 2008 her backing band consists of Todd Sickafoose on upright bass, Allison Miller on drums, and Mike Dillon on percussion and vibes.
I love the double A tuning.. Those bass notes hit so hard.

MUSIC is timeless... just found this song. I sing it at the top of my lungs. Her performance gives me hope and goosebumps. That tingly feeling is hard to find, but i got it when i heard this song for the first time. WOW ❤

Every young man in the 90s should’ve been forced to go to an Ani show. Things might’ve worked out a bit differently. It sure couldn’t have hurt. Maybe then our generation (X), which I was so naively sure would be so different, wouldn’t have failed so miserably. Discovering Ani way back then, along with meeting a few other great women over the years that followed, helped open those doors for me - at times even kicking them down themselves. Without them, they might’ve remained either cracked or completely shut for far too long, and for that I’m so very thankful to them all.
Male age 46 and I love Ani's work. Best female 🎸 and songwriter. Saw her at the Colonial Theater in Keene, NH on the Dilate tour in the mid 90's. Blew my mind! Instant fan after that show!

I used to feel the same way, but as I grew older, I got to evolve and move on from that too and I found I understand the "new" Ani a lot better now. Although, i have to admit that on a bad day I miss 90ies Ani, because that's when I need those angry, political, pissed off songs and they used to sound better then :)

Still a spectacular song that speaks to me so deeply, and Ani is still so beautiful, but she is so missing that sting of the original version. At 20-something, she had that sexy, edgy, pissed off energy, and maybe it's just because I'm some young, edgy lesbian, but I prefer the Ani of the 90's.
