All, let me put this out there: I LOVE this movie. It has been so heavy on my mind over the last few days. It's bold, daring, and tries something so out of the norm for this franchise. I might be obsesses in time. The ending is my biggest gripe (hence the thumbnail question). Let me know what you guys thought. Are you coming around to it on 2nd viewings? Halloween Ends baby.

The biggest issue surrounding this movie were way too many cooks in the kitchen. The worst of it all was the ending, because it literally buried the previous hour and 30 minutes of the movie, and the attempt of a new direction. I personally feel if it ended with Myers getting killed, Laurie getting killed, Corey disappearing like Myers did in the original, and Allyson being the sole survivor then it would've been fine. Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) single-handedly getting the best of Myers was a spit in the face in my opinion even though it was satisfying to some people. It's just been done before. I don't have an issue with going into a different direction, but execution was poorly done.

My theory is because they kept making a point to show how Corey’s hand was healing faster than it should have, and Michael did that weird thing looking into coreys eyes, that he transferred his being into Corey and Corey isn’t actually dead…he is now supernatural and Michael’s body was just too old and he had to pass his spirit to a younger soul. So they could make a new franchise following Corey as the boogeyman and Allison as the main character.

Upon rewatch, I think I know why Michael is so weak in Ends.
In Halloween Kills, after Karen removes his mask, that’s when he suddenly gets his ass kicked.
He puts it back on and kills them, but with severe wounds, going into hiding for some reason.
In Halloween Ends, Michael takes his mask back from Corey, only to get his ass kicked again.
My theory, is that Michael gets stronger with each kill when he’s wearing the mask,
But the moment it comes off, he resets, and is back to a being a regular man, until he kills again, to “transcend”.
This would explain why Michael reacts so strongly when his mask is taken off, and why he targets those people more brutally, with Karen, Corey, and Laurie.
Hence why he’s killed so easily by Laurie and Allyson.
Michael was essentially running on empty,
And he needs to kill Laurie in order to fully come back to his full self.

Remember Laurie in the closet in the first movie, trembling with fear, grabbing a hanger, frantically, screaming and crying, and you could feel her fear? Remember in the second one, how she was dragging herself down the hospital hallway, terrified, as he stalked her? Remember little Jamie in 4, who was a small child and saw him stalking her, not saying a word, and screaming with her? This movie has none of that. It seemed to have potential, but then it was gone. It wasn’t suspenseful or scary at all, and Myers is supposed to be almost supernatural in strength, can hold someone up by their neck with his hand, but he was overpowered by an elderly woman.
I agree, if it wasn’t a Halloween movie, it would have worked much better.

Waited until watching Ends a second time before this video so I could be more comfortable with my viewpoints. And again, I largely agree with your assessments. I do like the implications that Michael has been snatching people, and that we can make that connection with a billboard showing a missing person that's right next to the overpass and sewer where he dwells. This does make him like a fabled troll beneath the bridge takes the unsuspecting.
While it is easy to view this film as the closest to an anthology entry since Season of the Witch, Michael's influence on the town's mentality and thus his curse, as proclaimed by Laurie in Kills, is a natural follow-through in my opinion. Having Corey as a scapegoat makes him another casualty of Myers and even the mob mentality that was tearing the town apart, which is a fine connection for this kind of story.
As for that finale, imagine if either Michael or Corey had lived and opened the possibility of more movies; and all the frustrated groans from people calling this title a lie. "Yet another ending that's not an ending because money," and all that. Of course, that discourse is still being made to anticipate any future films, reboots, etc.
I am glad both die in the manners presented, with Corey having succumbed to evil but still dying at true evil's hands; the ultimate consequence for his actions. And with Michael, I was happy to see him ground up because not only did that mean that this ending was a true one with no cheap workaround, but it kept in line with the Christine parallels right to the end, with Corey dying from Michael and his own rage the same way Arnie did in/with Christine.
Perhaps the fight between Laurie and Michael could've been longer and more brutal, but both drew a nice amount of blood from one another. I even thought it nice they caressed each other's fingers as she bled his wrist, a small gesture that said more than any dialogue between them could. I would've been fine with both of them dying, but this way was good enough. Interesting that he still chose to bide his time when he learned where she lived.
If I have any gripes, it would be that some of the acting from side characters can be grating, and that it could have utilized more suspense. There are a couple of leaps in logic (like throwing away a bloody knife and hoping nobody notices) that might be hard to ignore. Perhaps more Michael would've been nice, but I appreciate that they saved him up.
I ultimately still like this more than Kills but not as much as 2018, which still holds up damn well for me.

We have seen that transfer of the "evil" between Myers and others before (Jaime and Danny) but the franchise never had the guts to see it through with another killer. Halloween ends is coming off a movie where Michael is still alive and for this to be the end movie, it's just a terrible way to do it.

I think if they rearranged the order of the story it may have hit harder. 1st movie about Michael escaping and heading to Haddonfield. 2nd movie about Haddonfield revved up to kill Myers, but that's when Corey storyline would come in and town would kill the wrong person but think they killed the real Michael Myers. Then 3rd movie is Haddonfield ignoring Laurie when she says Michael isn't dead. Ends with Laurie trapping Michael in her trap house and burning him to death - maybe she had to be downstairs in trap to capture Michael and she sacrificed herself to finally kill Michael. Anyway, until the next instalment, Stay safe!

We saw him vulnerable way too many times for my liking in Ends. Also feel like the movie centered around Corey which we all knew going in. But this was essentially his movie, and I just dont feel like there was a payoff for me. He just dies abruptly and then they move onto Myers vs Laurie.

The similarities between Christine and ENDS are so on point!
    1. In the beginning both arnie and Cory Cunningham were picked on and eventually their glasses were stepped on
    2. They found something old and evil that needed fixed up and became crazy about it.
    BEST ONE👇🏻
    3. When they both started/helped killing THEY BOTH SAID SHOW ME.. so crazy
    4. They both killed their bullies in awesome ways
    5. They both hated their mother
    6. When they would see each other they were alone in their certain places. Most of the time anyways
    7. Christine and Michael were on top of both Cunninghams when they die by a sharp object
    8. Both were disposed of in a junk yard in a machine that compacted/tore them apart.
Now that I’ve connected the dots I gotta say, now I love the movie because Christine is one of my favorite movies of all time! I can’t be mad at it anymore because I am accepting the fact that it’s not a Michael Myers movie, it’s just a Halloween movie.. I also love and appreciate Halloween 3
Both movies have a Cunningham with a evil driving force that changes/kills them!

One way to look at the ending and perhaps appreciate it more - Kills was the true ending, and looking at it that way, he ultimately won. This film was more of an epilogue that then shows a Michael already dying, and Laurie happens to be the one to help that process along. I'm kinda glad it ended this way since her victory in H20 was immediately invalidated by Resurrection, so this needed to happen to make me feel more okay with that. The character development was very well done, here, and the dialogue didn’t feel cheesy or contrived. The ending just didn’t work for me. That said, I can appreciate where they went with it. I liked most of the things in this movie. I really liked how they gave the characters that much attention, just to develop. I think Corey is a pretty good character. He's quite tragic. He's involved in an accident, that only he knows, was an accident. Everyone else thinks he's a monster and treats him as such, which turns him exactly into the monster they believed him to be all along. I was hoping that he would be able to come back from the darkness, but it was not to be and it's ok that way.
But by giving some aspects of this movie so much attention, one other important part suffers from it. Michael himself. My biggest problem with this movie is that Michael is barely in it. Barely any screen time, barely any kills and barely any cool scenes. I don't mind at all, that they turned Corey into the main killer in this, but Michael got sidelined a bit too much for my liking. Yes, you can argue that Kills was Michael's movie and it definately was, but having Michael barely present in the finale of the trilogy is a bit weird. Especially if you have such a great and fan-beloved actor like James Jude Courtney for the shape. If you have him, use him.
The idea for this movie would have worked better either as the second movie of the trilogy, which means that Michael can come back in full force and presence in the third movie or have him have a great comeback in the third act of the third movie, if you keep this story in the third movie. Doing the latter however would either mean a long movie or cutting down character stuff, neither of which is preferable.
Also I think Haddonfield itself was neglected in this movie. Michael went on a full out killing spree in the two last ones, but we barely get to see how it affected the people of the town. Yes, we get to see a survivor and some mentions, but it's not enough in my opinion. The previous movies showed the ordinary people doing their stuff and it was great to see the character of the town. This movie has his focus on the main characters and thus this movie feels a bit different from the first two, because you can't get a feeling of the town itself, which feels odd. The trick or treating scene in this movie is like five seconds of kids running in the street to remind audiences, that it is in fact Halloween, but other than that, you don't get to see Halloween itself, aside the decorations.
The cops also seem to be strangely absent from this movie. One cop literally goes missing and two hospital workers get killed, but we never learn, what the police is doing about it. Are they assuming Michael is back, do they think this is something else, are the people getting worried again? I think it would have made the third act more impactful, if Michael murdered some people on his way to Laurie's house, so that everyone panics again, because he returned. If that happens, Laurie fighting and beating him has way more impact, because she stops an active threat, instead of the two of them fighting without anyone even being aware, that this is going on and then just randomly showing up at the procession at the end.
Now, this was a rather long text, but as I said in the beginning, I mostly liked the movie. I'm not sure if it is one that I'll rewatch that often, because I do want my dose of Michael in a Halloween movie (except Season of the Witch of course) and that is just not given here. But other than that it's good with good characters and obviously good soundtrack by the Carpenter/Davies trio.

I’m not sure if anybody else was thinking this, but during the scene in which Laurie was contemplating suicide, I thought they were going to go a different direction than it being a luring trick. I thought it would be interesting if she is actually about to take her own life. But, just before she pulls the trigger, Michael, not Corey, walks through the door and Laurie is sort of distracted by that and changes her mind. How ironic it would have been if Michael would have unintentionally kept Laurie from doing what he’s been unable to achieve for many years, which is end her life.

Halloween Ends finally tackles a topic I've wanted to see since the ending of Halloween 4 and the final shot of Halloween (2018), which is the evil of Michael Myers as force that can be passed on to another being/rub off from prolonged exposure to Michael Myers. Be it his doctor, a victim of crime/circumstance, or a town. Seeds for the story and themes of Halloween Ends were fully baked into Halloween (2018) and only partially followed up on in Halloween Kills in a really poor way; Evil Dies Tonight! The continued arcs for Allyson and Laurie in Halloween Ends would play a lot cleaner if you remove most of Kills, transplanting Karen's death to the end of 2018 (sacrifice "killing" Michael in the basement), some more scenes showing dead Haddonfield citizens (including Cameron) before Michael is hit by Frank, and have the fire trucks drive by at the end, leaving wether Michael is actually dead ambigues, still ending on the original final shot. This will be my head canon from now on, and I will lovingly enjoy Halloween, Halloween (2018), and Halloween Ends as a trilogy.

For a good moment there I thought the movie would end with Laurie stabbing Myers over and over again and the evil of him would go into her and the film would end with her as the Shape. After all, when Myers was weak and in the sewers the evil went into Corey, and when Corey was bleeding out on the floor from stabs and gun shots the evil seemed to go back into Myers and then he killed Corey. The evil itself, the Shape, just seemed to go into whatever body worked best, so the logical ending of that is it enters Laurie. Now that would have been a bonkers ending.

He was initially able to take down the mob because of rage and adrenaline after getting beat down but after he escaped, he became weak. He needs rage to gain energy as shown in the scene where Corey brings that guy Doug to the sewer. That is also why he allows Corey to live. He wanted someone to attract and bring down victims that will basically act as battery packs of rage.

I thought the story for Ends was a refreshing change. I like how there was more of an emphasis on the darkness within Michael that fuels his strength. Seeing Corey being like a junkie needing more and more of his power to punish all the people in his life he feels has victimized and mistreated him after the accident.
I think people need to look at this movie as not a Laurie vs Michael movie, but more so a psychological look at someone with a lot of trauma and anger (in Corey's case, the townspeople tormenting him) and how that can transform them into something so heinous and dark. In the sense, the creation of "The Shape" itself.

Honestly, I adore the ending to this movie and I think it's my favorite aspect about this, especially because it sells the theme of this trilogy so well which is trauma and fear and how we deal with it, how we cope with it. Laurie in H18 is haunted by Michael, we see that even if he's not there, the boogeyman has ruined her life and has a constant grip on it which leads to her preparing for the day he got out and when he did? It of course leads to the knock-out fight they have. Kills was about the trauma of a community and how events like the massacre of 78 could deeply affect people, even generations later and the kind of shadow that hangs over them but it also shows these people are afraid, the survivors in particular tell themselves that they will face the boogeyman and they will take it down but they're deep down scared and completely unprepared for what is going to happen. With all that in mind? Ends is primarily about coming to terms with it and trying to move on and through trying to move on, we see that for as evil as Michael is, for how much he is the personification of evil, he really is just one of evil's forms. Evil never stays in one shape (pun totally intended) for too long, it always is changing and evolving. The boogeyman is never the same for every person and with that in mind? It's clear to see, Michael is still at the end of the day just a man.
I think it's especially emphasized with Laurie's short fight with Michael. I've seen people complain that it's too short and doesn't compare to the fight in H18 which is true... because it's not trying to be. The fight in H18 was from when Laurie firmly believed Michael was coming after her, that she was the main target of him and as such it's played out like a hero fighting the villain, Laurie's Luke and Michael's Darth Vader. Ends comes from a different angle, this is a Laurie who has had four years to think about how Michael does not care about her, that he is just a serial killer who kills for the sake of it and has lost so much and is under the belief she's about to lose another and with that? She is done with this. She is done with the cycle of fear and letting it control her life, done with pondering over why she was left on the planet while her friends and family are dead. She is taking back control and is burying her demons, they will always be there because that's how it is to be human and the evil will certainly be present as well as the memories but at least they can breathe and heal.
It also works from a meta perspective because the Halloween franchise when you look at it as a whole has always struggled with Michael in the sense that it has always struggled to move past him. H4 presents an ending where the evil passes to Jamie... only for H5 to undo that. The H6 Producer's Cut while I have my issues with it to give it credit tried to set up the series in such a way where new stories could be told but then the reshoots happened, leading to an ending where it just brings things back to the way they've always been with the assumption that Tommy's gonna be the new Loomis now. H20 resets and tries to be classic Halloween in order to end it... but then Resurrection happened. I mean it was even in the old contracts that Michael could never be killed definitively in the movies. They set up this franchise to keep going on and on and on with basically the same set-up. Michael goes around killing people, he gets stopped, he comes back next time and does the whole shebang all over again. Michael has dominated this series only because the company was too scared to move forward without him, too worried they'd have another H3 on their hands where the box office will be a disappointment and they'll lose their cash-cow to the point where they engineered the series in such a way to where endless sequels would be made with Michael. The thing is about Halloween though was Carpenter was never for that. It was why H3 was made and why initially they planned to turn it into an anthology series, hell it's why he never wanted to do a sequel in the first place.
This trilogy to me more than anything understands this. To me these are not made for people who want to just keep watching slasher after slasher, this is not made for Halloween fans who just want to see Michael do his thing every time. This is made by people who are admirers of film and storytellers first and fans second. David Gordon Green knew he was gonna piss people off with both this and Kills, he knew these were not going in directions anybody expected or maybe even wanted... and he didn't care. He was not making it for those people, he was concerned about telling the story he wanted to tell and how to properly end this trilogy and at least for this timeline put Michael Myers to rest. This is supposed to be Blumhouse's last Halloween film and so he chose a smart and bold route. He ended the series while leaving it open for something new. Them definitively killing Michael showed that, I really don't think this ending would've been as effective if we didn't see Michael die so definitively or if Michael just became the Michael Myers we saw in Kills again here and is a murderboss. In a way, he set it up for Trancas to consider the possibility of what they could do without Michael, how they could go in new and exciting directions while still carrying the Halloween name or hell if they didn't? They could still do something different. I mean Halloween is a series that even before 2018 was selling merch like masks and figures on a regular basis. But mostly, this ending was made to provide catharsis for Laurie, for Jamie Lee Curtis, for John Carpenter and for others by putting the Shape to rest as a capper to this trilogy and personally? I am glad to have witnessed that.

You know what tiny touch I loved is when Michael grabs Laurie by the throat when she says 'do it!' the music ques and you get flashes from all the movies. I felt the emotion there.

I liked this movie more the second time I saw it but I did notice a mindset that is happening in the world where people were blaming the victim more than the attacker. The woman blaming Laurie about Myers attacking her sister in Kills. The cop who was basically being a jerk to Allysan and Cory but your supposed to be mad at Cory for standing up to the cop like it's Cory's fault. Now we are supposed to believe that the band geeks are bullying the people around town now lol. The beginning scene with the kid was FANTASTIC!!

The first movie is perfect, so if you're going to do sequels, I prefer for them to go in a weird and bold direction. It's why I really enjoy this, the producer's cut of 6, and especially Season of the Witch. Big swings that were enjoyable, even if they weren't always perfect.

I absolutely agree, I’m tired of the slasher norm. There’s already so many Halloween movies, that take the traditional route, and kills was the one chapter where Michael was fully uncaged. This was the one entry that definitely needed to go into a bold new direction. I loved the new esthetic, and weird direction they took with Corey. It’s better to take risks, and although, the writing could’ve been a little better, I’m glad David Gordon Green took a risk, and switched things up, and honestly giving this trilogy a fairly satisfying ending.

Ok, Lee, here’s my take: initially I was very frustrated with the script choices made (as many were). Now, on third viewing, am working with the film we got and not the film I wanted and I have to say: not f*cking bad. The movie really didn’t even need Michael. And the kills and music in the junkyard band kids revenge scene, AMAZING. Im really coming around here WTF!? 😂

    Halloween Ends is a masterpiece.
This film alone has more depth and layers than every single Halloween movie combined. I'm still blown away by how different it is from anything else that preceeded it.. Halloween Ends is a complete deviation from the formula, but in my opinion that works greatly in it's favor! I love how incredibly story driven and character rich this film was. Genuinely can't remember any other Halloween movie having me this emotionally invested...
After 13 movies, it's looks like Halloween is finally finished. There is a sense of closure and finality in this film (even more so than H20). Every story needs a proper ending, and to me this film executed it's ending perfectly! I am 100% content with this being the last Halloween movie I will ever watch.
Halloween Ends is full of subtext and I feel like I'm gonna have to rewatch it a few times to fully grasp and appreciate how much thought and attention to detail was put into this movie. There is A LOT to unpack here.. This movie needs to be watched more than once to be fully appreciated.
A lot of people will probably dislike this film upon release simply because it's different from what they're used to. I can see this movie getting plenty of negative reviews in the coming weeks, but be seen as a classic in a few years from now.
I am looking forward to seeing it again in theaters on Sunday and owning the blu-ray once it's out!
    10/10

I think in a way this will have a legacy like Halloween 3. As a standalone film where this guy accidentally kills a kid and is branded a murderer and keeps getting bullied more and more into killing more people, all the while being befriended by Laurie Strode and growing a romantic relationship with Allison until they too discover how evil he's becoming, it could work on a certain level. But adding Corey's part exclusively in the third movie rather than planting the seeds for it in the previous two movies makes it feel completely disconnected. And much like Season of the Witch, it has the Halloween name attached to it, so people expect to see Michael Myers going on a rampage. Not just showing up for a cameo at the end because oh yeah, Laurie needs to kill him.

I wonder, if you're a person who easily complains how horror movie characters never double-tap on the villain to make sure that they're dead (not a complain of people in the Scream fandom, I'm sure), would you really have a problem that Laurie and Allyson did exactly that at the end of this movie? After all, Halloween 2018 had them run away as Michael was trapped in that burning basement and he STILL got out and eventually killed Karen, it would make sense that they know better than to leave any margin for error this time.

I didn’t like Ends simply because I DID like where the Corey story was going then it seems like the writers got a call from the studio to kill his story abruptly so they could cram in the Laurie vs. Michael fight for the marketing people. Green should’ve seen Corey’s story through. I’d have had more respect for the new angle had it been committed to.

I was kinda hoping one of the townspeople would still be mad at Laurie even though Michael was dead, and they pushed her into the grinder with Michael. Would’ve played into the whole evil passing onto others too.
