  • Struggling with woodland photography?.
Square crop ratios are typically not associated with traditional landscape photography, as landscape photos are often captured in wider aspect ratios to include more of the scene. Common landscape aspect ratios include 3:2, 4:3, or even wider panoramas.
However, artistic expression and personal style play a significant role in photography, and there are no strict rules. If you find a scene that works well with a square crop and it enhances the composition or emphasizes certain elements, feel free to experiment with it.
Square crops can create a sense of symmetry and balance, and they are often used in more abstract or minimalist landscape photography. Keep in mind that the square format may not be suitable for every landscape scene, especially if you want to capture the expansive beauty of wide vistas.
Ultimately, the choice of crop ratio depends on your creative vision and the specific characteristics of the scene you are photographing.

Thanks for devoting an entire segment to this. I don't know why I haven't tried it before. It took me a minute to find the setting on my Nikon but now I'm excited to try it!

Enjoyed the video and appreciated your suggestion on adjusting your crop in camera. I have tried it and really liked the results. However shooting with the Nikon Z7 2 and Z8 I have gotten away from cropping in camera because of the higher megapixel. I wish it retained all the info like the Fuji system. Thanks 🙏

Great vlog Jeremy 👍🏼 Sadly I have to envision the square crop as my camera doesnt have the setting to view in pano, 1X1 or the other views 😮 Square crop does work in a LOT of photos and all of yours it worked perfectly 😁

Isnt it almost summer down there? Shouldn't it be a bit warmer? Hopefully you continue to get those conditions once summer does hit. Love the square crop at 5:45, beautiful light and great composition!. I think my fav image though was the moody one at 8:27. Another great video/images mate, really enjoyed it! Hope all is well pal, chat soon hopefully. Lots to tell you...

Nice one Jeremy. Fog in November? It could only happen in the northern hemisphere and Ballarat. We haven't had fog here since August. Anyway mate great images as always. All the best.

Nice set of images Jez... I use your hack/advice also but with my panasonic I tend to use a panp crop of ratio 65:24 - next time I go out I will try the square crop mode. Its a pity the crop mode takes mega pixels from the image as my panny isa lowly 24 mega pixel camera and any crop will significantly reduce the size of the image - saying that I am not selling it or printing huge so it doesn't really matter. As you head into Spring, autum has just abt finished here and its wet n windy outside as I am watching this. atb Al
