Shelter worker here with some cat water facts! Cats still have strong instincts from the wild, and these instincts often lead to owners having trouble with them drinking water. TLDR: Don't put the water near the food bowl. If that still doesn't work, get a running water fountain type bowl. When cats were wild, food next to their water meant a corpse. That means rotting, which means disease, which means unsafe water. Because of this, cats have a very very ancient instinct to avoid water close to food. In the same vein, cats often instinctually avoid standing water, because in the wild that also means disease. While the water in your cats bowl isn't dangerous, their instinct is still reacting from their past when standing water wasn't safe. If they won't drink water, check if either of those is the problem. PS: As long as I've got your attention, I'd like to also mention cats instinctually hide their injuries, so keep your eyes peeled! A visibly injured ancient cat would be vulnerable to any scavengers about and that endangers them, and so they instinctually hide injury the best they can.
The last one tho. My Loki used to love trying to zoom past me to go outside and loved sunbathing while in his leash outside. One day he didn't even look up when I opened the door. I even took him outside off leash for sun bathing bc he had been lethargic af. By the time a cat begins visibly showing signs of illness/injury it's too late in some cases. Loki passed about two days after my attempt at brightening his mood, the vet helped by making his passing painless, by the time we were aware enough to ask questions, there was nothing that could be done. Also, string is fun and many cats love to play with it, please be aware some cats WILL eat it habitually and it will harm or kill them.
Cats are also prone to drinking water from your cups for a couple reasons. 1. They see you drinking from that source and they trust you so they trust that it is safe. 2. They like to try to mimic your behavior sometimes because they think it will help with whatever you're doing. :)
my oldest cat will drink loads from the bowl and then come over for a cuddle, realise i have water too and shove his face in like baby you've just drank like half a bowl
I feel like cats do this because they see us drinking water from these different "bowls" and they think it's special and want our stuff. My cat isn't allowed in my room most of the time because he eats my wires but I feel like from his point of view, I'm guardian of the incredible room full of fun strings.
That makes sense honestly, One of my cats likes coming to my room to drink water because I have a bowl in here (My dog likes chilling with me practically 24/7, So I always make sure there's some water here for him), my cat like never drinks from the bowl in the kitchen just the one in my room.
There's this neighborhood cat that I give food and water to, and I noticed that it would never drink the water I give it. I would freshen it everyday and clean it, but I never saw the cat drink from it, I even caught it drinking from the pool. After trying a few different things, because I didn't want the cat drinking pool water, it finally came to putting a big bucket of water next to the pool. I have no idea why, but that's what it took, and now I see the cat drinking from the bucket often enough that I'm satisfied. Cats are just weird and finicky with water, idk man
I learned through my cat, that cats prefer fresh water. So I would add fresh water to my kitty’s water daily & he would be happy when I pulled out my big purple water bottle to do it. I thought about it after & thought about how I don’t like to drink water that has sat out in a cup overnight- it goes stale/funny. Turns out pets also like a fresh drink of water each day too.
We just gave the cats their own cup of water at the table, and then got rid of the water bowl since they never touched it again. It stopped them from trying to steal water and they seem content.
They may be instinctually averse to standing water, or water near food! Cats will often have trouble drinking water in those situations due to the instinctual association with danger from the time they were wild.
My kitty does the same thing. We got her a fountain and it's the best thing we ever got for her. She drinks a lot more water, and she still likes to cram her face into cups, but she doesn't hesitate at the fountain like she used to at her water dish.
Apparently they do this because their instinct is to drink from a stream, which has fresh running water. The bowl is still and old water while your glass is a new source.
We all know what belongs to the humans is purrrferred. My cat insists on me pouring some water from my water bottle into it's top. It doesn't hold much water, she can get plenty more from a bowl on the floor, but she still insists on pawing at my water bottle, eyes bugging out of her head, like she's some honorary human for drinking out of a teeny cup.
Also, let it be known it's just her. My other 2 cats only drink out of their bowl. It's gotten to the point she won't just get all excited at seeing my water bottle, she's pawed at my brothers.
I actually think my cat is just odd, he passes up food for pets and immediately drinks water from the bowl when I put it out. He is love motivated and I like that, he is a good eldest child.
Mine doesn't want the clean tap water (netherlands, so no weird shit) but prefers the dirty rainwater + algae + dirt + waterfleas in our pond and what is left over in the disks that you place under potted plants
my cat loves water so much that she'll paw & scratch my little water fountain, until she gets the top off, & then doesn't know what to do with herself.
my cats like this too. we've got a fancy filtered water dish, but he prefers this plain bowl i have in my room (that i leave out specifically for him). if that bowls empty, he'll go attack the glasses in my mothers room asdfa
Whenever I would eat dinner I would fill 2 fresh glasses of water in identical cups, one for me and one for my cat. But she still insisted on drinking from my cup. Then I started taking a sip from hers in hopes that she would understand that both of them are drinkable, yet she would still fight to drink from mine. Eventually I gave up and just accepted that I am to share a water cup with my cat forever. So she decided to start knocking over the water over now.
i have never had a cat try to drink out of a glass or have any problem with a water bowl even when it was one of those combined food/water-in-the-same-dish things with the divider in the middle. i have two feral cats who decided to be friendly and even though the natural running stream has been their water for however long, they love their water bowl on the porch. i have to refill it all the time and they usually flock to drink it when i do. it's right beside the food dish. they don't even care if bugs are floating in it.
My cat knows what he wants. He does not drink from normal water bowls, he has to drink from glasses. He will only drink if you get him a glass cup or bowl. He is a fancy cat!
