Collection can be harmful but for sure habitat destruction is the worst culprit. Even here in Canada our last old growth forests with 2000 year old trees are being cut down, it's terrible.
More trees are being planted then are being cut down now ,thank god ,but cutting down ecosystems that old ,should be against law ,iam pro wild places ,nature hase the right to be without man ,
I can´t understand why people still are wanting some T.seladonia tough the deterrent pricing and fragility of keeping and maintaining them. they should really be restricted to progressed keepers no matter what. but no money ruled their little egos as always, and we even know the first settlers making everyone horny to get some... such a nehilistic move anyway, they already have been introduced no need to spam the market anymore.
The pet trade and smuggling has barely any effect on wild pops compared to deforestation that is the real problem trust me I've been studying for years on the subject
I'm not getting political but the sad reality is because of China's demand for soy and beef means the liklihood is more of the Amazon rainforest will be burnt down for farms, those 2 items are Brazils largest export. The tarantula hobby needs to start a group of sorts which talks to governments directly, think of how many P. metallica are in the hobby but in the wild the are critically endangered. This group for lack of better words speaks with governments to try and start reintroducing native captive bred tarantulas back into the wild and then working with governments for new species of tarantulas to be brought into the hobby so the process of breeding for the wild can start again. I also feel like it's a good way for the T community to give a little something back. You never know it could inspire an entirely new generation of tarantula lovers. Might even help with poaching as the poachers could actually become employed to locate tarantulas as well as release but I could be wrong.
If we have the t in the hobbie trade at least we can reintroduce them back into the wild when people come back to there senses an relize ,eco tarantula trips ,will help make the locals money those save them ,
Very cool video, Martin. You nailed it: the main threat to tarantulas in the wild is habitat destruction by urbanization, agriculture etc. which is mostly legal with high profits, and pollution, but surely NOT some enthusiasts collecting some specimens (although there are some guys collecting several tens and hundreds specimens which may harm a population). Putting species on CITES without any abundance data is pure activism and surely not justified. Cheers.
I was completely unaware of this new, colorful species. I have has a T. Seladonia so am aware of husbandry needed. Would love to see this become available at some point. Thank you for spelling out each species name, I find that helps a lot for me.
Amazing Video! They are all so beautyful, so I can´t decide :D Is T. coastae like T. seladonia a trapdoor spider? We have so many Tarantulas in the hobby, we don´t need all of them. How high is the chance in germany to buy a wild caught speciment? or in general in europe?
yea, trapdoor building aswell. It depends of the species if its likely to buy a wildcaught or not - interestingly, the countries with legal export show more wildcaught specimens offered. Illegal collected specimena usually are brought in very low numbers and then bred first, sometimes multiple generations before sold their offspring purely captive bred
The T costae with its yellow hairs behind the eyes looks like an old punk ... 😉 Really lovely T’s. But the Seladonia remains one of my favorite. It is so pretty. I would love to have a enamel brooch or a pendant representing it. Thanks for presenting them to us.
I could not bring myself to buy a spider of this genus. It would be a rather poor choice as first tarantula. And they are just so crazy colorful, that I guess a part of brain cannot accept them as real animals... Maybe this will change when captive breds become widely available. Oh, and I still think T. seladonia is the prettiest of the bunch...
Such amazing looking spiders! I haven't made my mind up on which is worse, illegally smuggling them out for the pet trade or just watching them go extinct due to deforestation. I'll just watch videos for now ha ha, thanks for sharing
unregulated collecting isnt good for sure, since you don't know how many people went there and collect - you can just assume based of captive breeding and availability that most species are not sold as wild caught but first bred by people and then sold
wow, this is a whole new level of tarantula documentary. Your channel and the way you present scientific information about our loved tarantulas is just outstanding. You have my utmost respect and thank you so much for sharing this with us!

that sounds horrible!
and yes, unregulated collecting can be harmful too, totally agree on that
More trees are being planted then are being cut down now ,thank god ,but cutting down ecosystems that old ,should be against law ,iam pro wild places ,nature hase the right to be without man ,
beautiful. Very interesting info. Thanks

anyway, they already have been introduced no need to spam the market anymore.
they are not that fragile - but yes, there are better tarantulas suited and there is no need that every species is in the hobby, true and fully agree
Of course that the seladonia is the most colorful one
