  • Sooty mold can wreak havoc on crape myrtle trees! It is the black, crusty material that covers the leaves during the growing season. Have you ever seen a crape myrtle in the summer with black leaves and even black wood?

    That is pretty cool that is all it needs to treat that issue. Very interesting the way it works.

    Good stuff Sunny. I did mine a few weeks back but didn't know they had to have a 2nd treatment. Thx!

      Thanks, Brian! Yeah, apply again in July and it should carry throughout season. Bugs seem worse this year, wonder if it’s because of the mild winter.

    Sunny I got hit hard with sooty mold late last summer but my crape myrtles are about 15 years old a lot bigger than yours, luckily I top mine every two years. I couldn't imagine treating it when it over 20 ft tall, there's no way I would have got to all the leaves. After doing a ton of research I've been hitting it hard with dormant oil all winter-earlt spring, so far everything's looking good. I'll know if it worked in 6-8 more weeks. I created a pretty cool thing in my front yard I have a white dark pink light purple white dark pink light purple along my road. This year they didn't bloom because of all the black mold and mine lost leaves prematurely too. I'm determined to whip their but this summer. I had white flies everywhere. I guess they love this sooty mold too. Thanks for the video I will definitely be trying your way if this doesn't work

      Thanks for sharing, I had someone else mention the dormant oil. I may have to mix that in with my routine.

      @@SunnyBermuda Just an update. I am starting to see them again :(.. Something I never tried was getting on a ladder and blasting them with my spray gun and then connecting my hose end sprayer( a empty hydratain bottle) with insecticdal soap in it . I did this yesterday by appyling the soap to the leafs making it very soapy. The one I did this way near my truck , all the white dots was stuck on the hood of my truck after the spray down. I took a magnifing glass later and looked at them and wow they are aphids. Ugly looking buys unger the scope. I am goona be trying Imidacloprid now, hoping for the best, if not ill be trying what you used

      Wow! Thanks for the update! 👍 I haven’t seen any on my trees yet.

      @@SunnyBermuda The Imidacloprid worked great. It was good seeing my crepes blooming again last summer. What I hate about the Imidacloprid is its a alot harder to apply. I have over 20 crepe myrtles I treated and it was time consuming pulling back mulch , then poking holes around the base of tree, then mixing product in a 2 gallon water can , then pouring around tree, then watering it in afterwards, then I had to put the mulch back. I think I am gonna go with the Acephate from now on as it looks like its so much easier to apply. Did you have good results late summer last season? Did you do one application or two??

      The Acephate worked great. I did 2 treatments, but I only have the 3 that you saw I the video.

    Our crepe myrtle is about 25 ft tall. It look like something for Halloween decor! The bottom half is BLACK! As are some of the leaves on our drawf cherry tree. And surrounding shrubbery! We did not prune this crêpe myrtle last year but we did the year before and the same thing happened. Someone told us not to prune it again. So what in the world are we going to do to get rid of these insects and now the white residual that is all the way to the top of the branches? I read somewhere I could use a little bit of dishwashing liquid and a sturdy rinse from a the hosepipe? Help!

      ☀️The Acephate mentioned in this video should prevent this if applied in April and June. You can also use Horticultural oil to help prevent the black leaves: amzn.to/3QGIejj
      Also, your friend is correct. You should never prune or cut down a Crepe Myrtle like most people tend to do. Not much you can do to cure the black leaves. Just start treating them on a regular basis. If it stays warm long enough the leaves could fall off a sprout new.

      Mine is the same….does it go away in winter?

    • @SunnyBermuda
      @SunnyBermuda  10 місяців тому +2

      @marjorieyarnell1926 Yes, goes away as tree goes dormant but will return the following Summer if not treated.

      I scraped mine (5-15 feet in height) with a steel brush about the size of a hair brush. The scale was removed, as was most the black "soot." Using chemicals is really not needed. Within a week or two, new growth formed, and the scale is gone.
      Doing nothing is a bad move. Sure, this method is work, but I saved my trees.
