Attempting to Get Rid of Black Mold on Citrus (and Mealybugs)

  • Though you can also use Neem oil and other things, I went hardcore and used a sulfur spray (Stoller Top Cop) and insecticidal soybean oil (also from Stoller). The sooty mold and mealybugs gotta go! I almost never spray anything, but in this case, I used what a local gardening expert recommended. We'll see what happens next. This is an experiment, not necessarily an endorsement of this practice. Time will tell.

I recently watched Self Sufficient Me use vasoline on the trunk of the tree to stop ants from climbing and tending to aphids/scale, etc.

Hey Dave, here's something that works very well for me. I take batting (the stuff they put in pillows, jackets, duvets etc. and cut a strip about 150mm wide. Wrap it around the base of the tree about 500mm above the ground and put a band around it. Then fold it over. I have found that ants cannot get over it.

One thing to note for those considering using copper is that it can be bad for the health of the soil so only use it if you really have to. Using it occasionally like this probably won't do much, but it's good to be aware of.

When our Miracle Fruit tree had a similar problem I first sprayed the leaves and trunk with the jet setting on the hose. I then wrapped flagging tape around the trunk below all the branches (about 3-4" wide). I then wrapped sticky fly tape around the trunk on top of the tape. This completely eliminated the ants! The ones above the tape either got stuck or died off and the one below either got stuck or ran away!

I have a set of Kitchen measuring cups and spoons which are dedicated to my garden, they don't cost much and stay in my small tool container so they never get used for anything else. I plan to do the same with the tools I plan to get and use for making soap. The measuring stuff is cheap enough here stateside to make that safety step no problem.

The best method I've found for pest control/slash elimination is a "soup" that I used to make from soaking cigarette butts I got from local bars. It was nasty but effective, and did no harm to the plants. I stopped making it when they started putting flame retardant chemicals in cigarettes. I couldn't find enough American Spirit smokers to make up the difference, and cigar shops are few and far between. I've never tried capsicum juice, but I'd love to hear any tips for an organic substance.
