Patrick Tatopoulos did an amazing job of the creating the alien art style. Its sorta like the classic gray alien and silver disk design but much more stylized and modern. Big fan of he's work. Btw 25:17 is a cut alien scene where they are planning on attacking the earth like a big gathering which was planned for movie. Its never been shown besides in concept art.
This film has the perfect blend of miniature models, colors, background musics, practical effects, special effects and CGI One of my favorite movies of all time
This is so cool! I love the movie and seeing what went into the production of it is unbelievable. I'm so glad they put this behind the scenes together.
Still better than the CGI crap fest we have today. Even Emmerich's White House Down effects look really shit compared to Independence Day. ID4 Oscar for Visual Effects was really deserved. I miss such effects today.
Fun fact: on his next movie Godzilla, Roland Emmerich used the name Tatopoulos which was the designer of the Aliens for this movie (Patrick Tatopoulos) for one of his main characters (Nick Tatopoulos)
yeah and i thought the scene where the president is climbing into his fighter jet and the alien fighter ship flies by overhead and he looks at it was a nod to the scene in empire strikes back
+Sharon Davies Or how whole departments are armies of female workers with female supervisors in many studios these days... I also thought with all the feminist crusading that surely...patriarchy -.- But meh, white girls trying to tell the world what it is...tale as old as time...
I grew up looking star wars movies then ID4 and fifth element. I was arguing with a younger man about how practical and miniature effects look more real and ages better. He was desagreee telling me all arts evolve constantly' so early 3d looks bad ( for example 3d jabba the hut in star wars dvd version of Episode 4 ) because it was the early process, miniatures we're pretty much top of the art in ID4, star wars in other way was using first techniques but modeling was already established. So, his point was 3d will get better and better then you won't spot in the future what is true or not and his conclusion was that miniatures are not better than 3D. I can understand his point of view, we reach something huge with Gravity or Avatar for exemple . but it's seems before that miniatures best movies were a combination of hard work and also a good movie stand alone. Now armies of 3d artists with dozens of companies work on movies. The lightening is something very important and can make a movie look good or bad and maybe it was that point so few worked instead of big, greasy, pop 3d effects were there is no search of hide 3d but show most of it ( Hobbit ) The eyes still tell me that miniatures movie with practical effect have some unique feeling, it fits perfectly in TV because it's nearly a original size of what you are seeing and 3d can't reproduce that sense of feeling the volume, the density and realness of the elements. Considering how tight the budget was and how this happen. I'm so happy to have grown up with this movie. After star wars, that was my main movie then avatar came after that. Marvels in other hand were a great long series of movie with great characters, but not so much droping jaw special effects.
i wish there would making movies like the old times i like the new computer effects too some stuff looks very awesome but i miss the old times with this cgi it looks so cool and have a realistic atmosphere and this touch of atmosphere is missing today ! anyway i love this movie and i hope some day we will see a movie with the old special effects
Anarchist86ed No it's not, if you see recent movie with lots CG Cartoon (Amazing Spiderman, Days of Future Past, Avengers), all above $ 200 mill. Where are those budget goes?
I believe the problem with practical effects today is the amount of time the director is given to prepare the movie for filming. Like, John Carpenter's _the Thing_. He had a year to prepare for that, and nowadays, it's down to 3 months for prep, at least for some movies.
@@harvestercommander3250 It used to be hard, but I promise you the guys at ILM and Weta Digital can do it in their sleep. Not all CGI sucks, but I think the problem is nowadays CGI can be easily outsourced at lower cost and quicker turnaround times than ever before, and that leads to it being overused in places were practical effects would have been looked more compelling.
This is why I will not enjoy the 2nd Independence day, pure CGI and it looks horrible, and not nearly as impressive as this film. Sad to see this creativity dying off.
I never saw ID4 in cinema, only on DVD. To this day, the effects still look spectacular to me. Then I watched IDR in the cinema but the CGI, while still looking awesome, didn't really blow me away, even though the destruction was on a way bigger scale. Well executed practical effects and real explosions are tangible and can never be beat with CGI.

film has the perfect blend of miniature models, practical effects and CGI, everything is used where necessary and it still looks fantastic
Now mars attacks buddy I love mars attacks and Independence Day
I wish they brought back miniature effects.
This film has the perfect blend of miniature models, colors, background musics, practical effects, special effects and CGI
One of my favorite movies of all time
A 6 seconds shot having 52 Gigabytes. In 1995-1996. Let that just sink in for a moment.
I even thought those ships were CGI but totally advanced graphics. No wonder they looked so real. THEY WERE real.
This is so cool! I love the movie and seeing what went into the production of it is unbelievable. I'm so glad they put this behind the scenes together.
This movie has just gorgeous special effects. New sci-fi movies hardly compare to this, relying too much on cgi..
Still better than the CGI crap fest we have today.

+brav0wing yeah true :P but i have to say the opening battle from revenge of the sith look very awesome for cgi :D
Funny fact it came mostly with cheap toys miniature. The visual effect commentary on the bluray blew my mind
0:42 EXCITING! PEOPLE ARE DYING OUT THERE, I DON'T THINK EXCITING IS THE WORD I'D CHOOSE TO DESCRIBE IT
Back in the 90s.
When they wanted to blow stuff up.
They actually blew stuff up.
Cuando el ingenio para crear películas era necesario 💕💕💕💕
Quem nasceu pra petisco ☺️ nuuunca ao prato principal, sensacional.

I wish the guys put the video where independence day wins the academy award for best visual effects.
I didnt realize till watching this video that the mothership looked like a sliced death star.
yeah and i thought the scene where the president is climbing into his fighter jet and the alien fighter ship flies by overhead and he looks at it was a nod to the scene in empire strikes back
Thomas Jowers which scene in ESB? Yoda in Dagobah looking up as Luke leaves him?
Destro7000 yes
They did a GREAT job with this movie. They don't make'em like they used to.
These effects never get enough praise.
I’d give anything for a Marvel movie to give me this sense of scale!
They're too devoted to cgi lol. Practical effects are where it's at for me, with some cgi enhancements thrown in.
Special effects in ID4 are pretty realistic. Everything is just natural.
simple. elegant. massive.
..thats what she said
Lapd asking gangs not to pop a cap at the spaceship lmao
шикардос люди действитель потрудились на славу
Whatever happened to that full scale mock up of the alien fighter? That would make a cool museum piece.
I would pay to see that
I want the little version for my desk
Look at all of these women CGI Supervisors, with teams of men working under them in 1995! I thought there would be, you know, more....Patriarchy. :p
+Sharon Davies
Or how whole departments are armies of female workers with female supervisors in many studios these days...
I also thought with all the feminist crusading that surely...patriarchy -.-

Maybe they just earned it instead of complaining.
+Tyvern Overlord C'est vrai, mon ami.

Practical effects are way expensive.
Anarchist86ed No it's not, if you see recent movie with lots CG Cartoon (Amazing Spiderman, Days of Future Past, Avengers), all above $ 200 mill. Where are those budget goes?
Yusron Fuadi
Actors fees.
Anarchist86ed hahaha right on. Actor Fees.... the last things i want to know (or care) about film making.
I believe the problem with practical effects today is the amount of time the director is given to prepare the movie for filming. Like, John Carpenter's _the Thing_. He had a year to prepare for that, and nowadays, it's down to 3 months for prep, at least for some movies.
I like this portion 11:11 - 19:32 the most
incredible practical effects. Unsurpassed.
CGI still sucks, this guys should be very proud, these effects have not been surpassed.
Still amazes me to this day each time I re-watch the movie. It feels so authentic and whole. The Oscar was well deserved.
Why dont they still make films like this?
People who say CGI suck are the stupidest people ever. They hate it for literally no good reason. Do you ever know how hard it is to do CGI?
I came frome the future, and I want to say that you are wrong. CGI is amazing in my year (2019)

I didn't know Tommy Wiseau worked on Independence Day.
I wonder if any of these people are still alive.
3:05 that is why the sequel shouldnt have happened.
Hey fun boys get a room
transformers 2007 changed cgi
11:32 oh so clever and smart species have bigger brains and eyes which need a bigger head to house so I guess i have to say that i am stupid 😂😂🤣🤣
7:28 - 9:42 The Best Part
is it me, or does Dean Devlin look like Kirk Hammett?
I totally see it!
ua-cam.com/video/EP1ut8KG5eM/v-deo.htmlm3s
FIFTYTWO GIGABYTES! - OWH LORD!

How do i buy one of those aliens so he can ride shotgun in my convertible

What the... ?!
The Chinese announcer was NOT speaking Chinese!

6:55. 8:30
This is why I will not enjoy the 2nd Independence day, pure CGI and it looks horrible, and not nearly as impressive as this film. Sad to see this creativity dying off.
So you've seen the film? How was it? /s
Give it a chance people.
