    Essay time…!
I personally think .40 is the most versatile semiautomatic handgun caliber:
135-155gr rounds do well with terminal performance in the body. Plus, in that weight class, they’re moving so fast that the raw energy you’re getting out of it is hardly a step down from .357 Sig.
165-180gr does nice on barriers. A larger mass than 9mm and only a little slower. It holds together as they pass through a windshield or rib bone, etc.
140gr solid copper can be a satisfactory balance of both qualities.
If/when (probably the latter) 10mm falls out of favor… Or the ammo runs dry, you can shoot your .40 bullets through it. Most 10mm target ammo is the same power as .40 anyway. Like low 400FPE. I think even the people who like 10mm will drop the platform eventually for that reason. Also, the .40 is a shorter round. Smaller grip, easier concealablity for what it’s worth.

I think the .40 coming into fashion caused feelings of inadequacy in the 9mm fanboy club and spurred all the +P and +P+ innovation that is around today. Without the .40 the 9mm would still be the barely adequate round it was in the 80s.

As a person who wants to eventually get a pocket backup I’d was a Glock 27 .40 S&W for when I need something very small because it’s just a better option to have tucked in a book bag next to stuff you need without having too much space taken up but enough firepower to compensate for the time you in fact need a backup over your primary carry

..40 for the win. It's not for everyone, but for me I prefer it, if available. For range, sure 9mm is usually less expensive, but like others said, it is usually available in a crunch, due to others hoarding 9mm.aer I wish S&W would give us a PC update on the Shield 2.0 series for a PC Plus in .40....that would be fantastic... Also, I would appreciate a HK P30SK in .40 for a DA/SA win.

Most people don't have the ability to think for themselves SPN. All this ignorance toward 40 does is leave extremely cheap 40 caliber handguns for us. I cant walk into a gun store without seeing a $300 .40 and i buy them every time. Recently i got a fde gen 4 23 i swear i bet it has 50 rounds through it if that many.
you can tell when you do a lot of shooting with different barrel lengths that the bullets hit harder out of longer barrel you can hear/see it kick up more dirt or it gets there faster or hits louder. I often wonder if the Glock 27 is enough because the barrel is short. I go with the 165 grains because if this

I love .40 caliber. I started on it before 9mm even. The shop I bought my first G23 in was probably pushing them at the time? (2009). Fine by me. I actually shot it pretty well. Didn’t mind the recoil or 13 round capacity. Hey SPN, I commented last night on the .380 video about Buffalo Bore ammunition & I think it was deleted? Is that possible? Was it YT or you? Is .40 still relevant? IMO yes and no.
Yes: it's widely available and almost every handgun manufacturer makes at least 1-2 weapons that take it. The bang for your buck is great and it's usually available whenever there's an ammo shortage.
No: .40 was developed for police and intelligence agencies back when the stopping power of 9mm and the quality of guns on the market weren't as good as they are today. We now have higher grain 9mm ammo that is comparable to the average .40 bullet. That higher grain 9mm ammo isn't always more expensive than the usual 115-124 grain ammo or harder to find. 9mm is strong enough to get the job done and ballistics quality has improved since .40 was first introduced ~35 years ago. Police, military, and intelligence agencies have gradually retired their .40 sidearms because the ammo is more expensive than 9mm and the .40 magazines can't hold as many rounds. The 9mm stopping power in higher grain is about equal to the average .40. Also, 9mm recoil and accuracy are typically better and easier to control. Most gun and pawn shop owners I've asked about the 2 say .40 had its place but it has basically been beaten. Plus, .40 ammo is always more expensive than most 9mm.

the problem of 40 sw is the fact that it really does almost nothing that a +p 9mm couldn't, it does have more mass and slightly bigger caliber but does it really change anything

Ok spn you already knew I was gonna say something. And I’ll keep saying it. it’s More recoil for no extra performance. Foot pounds of energy does not equate to extra performance. What matters is penetration, PERMANENT wound cavities, expansion, and shot placement. I shoot 44mag, 50 Ae, etc for fun. It’s not about recoil it’s about performance.

It has slightly “better” performance. But I mean it’s so debatable what “better” is. You have to look at tests of each individual brand of hollow points, plus p, normal pressure, different weight etc etc. they all perform so differently. Personally I think 9 is fine. I care more about a good balance between penetration and wound cavitation. You need good penetration. People underestimate the power of good penetration. What if it has to travel through layers of heavy clothing, through an arm, through bone, through another multiple layers of clothing to enter back into the chest cavity, then through ribs, then through more tissue to get to the heart or something vital? That’s a lot of penetration required to do that

    • @VanTheMan1099
      @VanTheMan1099 22 дні тому

@@michaeldanchez9530 People that say 40 or 45 or 357 sig is so much better never have real sources to back their claims. At most they have some dude in his backyard shooting uncalibrated ballistics gel with a slow motion camera and thinking that temporary wound cavities or "energy transfer" is a good indicator of a rounds effectiveness. This completely discounts the fact that the human body is mostly made of water and that "energy transfer" is mostly dissipated in human tissue. What causes incapacitation by pistol rounds is shot placement. What causes lethality from pistol rounds is blood loss. Fact is pistol rounds largely perform similarly once you hit a certain size and speed and you dont gain extra effectiveness until you hit rifle speeds.

    • @michaeldanchez9530

@@VanTheMan1099 100 percent agree. I watch a lot of tnoutdoors9s ballistics gel videos. I feel like he tries his best to calibrate the gel correctly and you really can see the differences in the calibers. Generally there’s not a huge difference. Like I said, the type of ammo seems to matter way more than the caliber
