Janey, can you build a cute cottage like shed around propane tank with large access doors?
🤔I like this idea! Jason! 👆🏼please! 😆💕
You should never restrict air flow around a propane tank so building a shed around it could be very dangerous or even plant within 5 ft of a tank!
@@DigPlantWaterRepeat check your state rules, some restrict building structures around tanks that could restrict airflow.
Oh that would be so cute! I love this idea!
@@kater8730but wait! Ours was buried. How does that work?
Design perspective: Try moving the black mondo grass as an edge of bed liner. Because it is so dark, it tends to disappear in the landscape (especially against the dark mulch), so planting it closer together and using it like eye liner is more effective. Then all the white behind it will pop as a bigger field of white. I think you will like the contrast better.
I chuckled at your banging the pump parts on the side of the basin. My husband is an engineer. He calls that “percussive maintenance “ 😂
Hahahaha, glad to hear an engineer signs off on this method!!
Little tip: Take the leaf blower to the Star Jasmine and all the spent blooms come right off
Another little hummingbird food tip! I put in 1 cup of hot water with the sugar, stir to melt, THEN add cool water to fill the remaining 3 cups. Then it’s a perfect temp to fill! I’m always SO over cleaning them that I don’t want to wait to fill 😅
I’m not sure your aware of this or not but corn is a heavy feeder ? And they do like moisture, once corn starts growing it grows fast. Silly story, when I was a young girl my dad and I were walking in our corn fields he told me that you could hear corn growing and I thought sure dad 🤪 well I did hear the corn growing, on a hot windless day you could actually hear movement in the corn fields I THINK it had maybe rained the night before and the conditions were perfect to hear it ! It was a VERY gentle sound like maybe a very soft gentle breeze blowing through the corn BUT there was absolutely NO wind it sure left an impression with this at the time young girl of probably ten or eleven. I’m pretty sure no one will believe this but when you have acres of corn surrounding you I’m telling you you CAN hear it growing ! 💐💚🙃 PS it also can grow approximately six inches or more overnight if the conditions are right 😮💐💚🙃
A tip I learned with hummingbird food is to make it ahead and keep it in a glass container in the refrigerator. I make 7 cups at a time and use it up within 2 weeks in my three feeders. They LOVE when I clean and refill with the cold mixture during hot summer days! I also started using half boiling water and stirring until sugar is dissolved and then mix the other half using room temperature to make it usable right away. I have tried many feeders and found the favorites with my hummers are the ones with perches to rest on while eating. They are a joy to watch!
I do that to, sure saves time to have some made ahead. I don't have hummers but the bee's love it in the spring.
Same
Nectar can be stored in the refrigerator for up to one week, not two weeks. Maybe you could make a little less. Thanks for feeding the hummers!
@@laurahiggins4712 Thanks for the great info! Thankfully, in reality my solution seldom lasts a week with changing my feeders every 2 days and sometimes daily when temps are very warm out. Filling feeders 1/2 full saves from wasting too much of it which is helpful.
I also just add enough hot water to dissolve the sugar, then add cool water to the 4:1 ratio. It's ready to go outside as soon as I clean the feeders. It may depend on where you live for this method though.
Someone told me to add copper pennies dated before 1982 (after that they were made with zinc) to my birdbaths and fountains to prevent algae. So far it seems to be working for me. Worth a try.
😅 I'm learning all kind of tricks today! Thanks!
What about mold.? And how do the birds like it
@@barbaracole4314 it’s safe for the birds and other wildlife. Never got mold in my fountains or birdbaths so can’t help you there. 🤷♀️
Jason is the best and so thoughtful! The way he set up the umbrella for you…sweet!!
The intake valve on your pump is getting clogged with sediment. If you blast the front of the pump or shake it underwater while it’s off you won’t have to slam it around and possibly break it. The filter is very fine so it fills up fast if the fountain is dirty.
I hose my filter each time I clean the fountain even if there are no problems. Preventative maintenance. :)
I was thinking almost the same thing. It also looks like some algae, and in the cool dark interior of the fountain, you can get algae, and it stinks and clogs the filters.
Oh Janie that was just so sweet of Jason to bring you some shade.😊
Well, you started my day with a giggle and a happy memory that I needed someone to jostle for me. As I was growing up, about every third year my dad would drive us on a multi-week road trip to visit family across country - Kansas, Oklahoma and one year Kentucky. On one of the trips (I was old enough to remember so probably early teens) we were on our way from OK to KY and the Pontiac station wagon broke down. Dad got it over to the shoulder of a quiet country highway and did all he could think of to get it started. Eventually someone pulled over and asked if Dad wanted the helpful someone to send a mechanic from the next town to help. Dad agreed and the helpful someone sent a mechanic. The mechanic took a quick look, grabbed a tool and banged on the engine somewhere. Car started right up. We all looked at the guy incredulously and he shrugged and said, "Well, sometimes ya just gotta whump it." Apparently sometimes fountain filters just gotta get whumped. You may have saved me my $100 annual pump replacement. This time when it stops working, I'm just gonna whump it.
Glimpse of zig zag bed looks amazing ❤️❤️❤️.
I know; I thought it was amazing too! So lovely.
Yes, the zig zag is sooo beautiful ❤❤❤
It's giving me so much joy daily, thanks for noticing!!
For the propane tank, you can build a cute white picket fence or install lattice type screen around it & have something grow on it, like a rose, clematis, etc.
REGARDING PUMP CLEANING- I saw on Homesteading with the Zimmerman’s (Amish) that she put hydrogen peroxide in her animal troughs when they got slimed with fungus algae . I now put a little in my bird bath once and awhile to keep it from clogging up and aiding me in cleaning it. I use a small xo brush as the pump circulates the peroxide and breaks it up. Since she said that the peroxide in the troughs does not harm the animals I don’t worry about it Once I see the pump operating quicker I add more water to dilute.
I did not know about the rice trick either. I will be sure to let my husband know because he takes care of the birds. I love the ideal of planting corn around the propane tank, and the pumpkins are going to be so much fun! I know you are off on another trip right now, so I hope that you are feeling much better. Try to make sure you get enough rest! 💐
Janey, I had a garden very similar to your jasmine bed with the black mondo scattered around. It never really looked that great and a landscaping friend insisted I plant them in a row on the outer edge. They look so awesome against my walkway and then all the contrasting plants behind the mound really stand out! Still has a cottage vibe.
Janey, if you are looking for a stunning white flower try Vinca. It’s so generic that most pass it over, but it’s drought tolerant once established and takes all the heat (and humidity) and blooms consistently all season. Also…it’s so cheap!
Dusty miller might be pretty with the mondo grass also😊
I know it seems so weird--the first time someone told me to tap the pump several times on the fountain, I thought they were kidding. Supposedly this helps align the magnets so they start pumping again. You inspired me--I'm getting my bird bath fountain going today!!!!
🤦🏾♀️ I didn't know this.... I have thrown away so many pumps that I only had for a couple of months but I only ran it one month... Thanks for the info
I was thinking that for a short stem pumps one uses a pipe cleaner. Otherwise get something to snake it through. That’s what plumbers do! I owned an aquarium and of course had a mini brush for those old fashion filtration systems. It’s always the guck and slime that accumulates which of course makes logical sense! 🥰🇨🇦
You guys should paint the propane tank for every holiday/season…constantly change it up something fun to do with your family, or paint flowers on it. Or put dig garden plant repeat logo on it!
They are restricted by the propane company from painting the tank. 😩
Important Hummingbird Information: On hot or cold days, to maintain feeders, fill with less, more often.
70-84*F.....Clean every 3 days
85-87*F.....Clean every 2 days
88-99*F.....Clean every single day
Nectar can be stored in the refrigerator for up to one week. If possible, keep your feeder out of
direct sunlight in the summer. Never let your feeder become cloudy or moldy, bacteria and mold will kill. Always keep clean. Thanks for feeding the hummingbirds!
Excellent advice, I follow the same steps. I also clean with white distilled vinegar and hot water, be sure to rinse well. I do not recommend soap because it can leave a film 😊
NOOO I didn’t know about the rice thang!!!! Thanks for sharing I’m trying this out today! I keep out 5 feeders 🥰
I didn’t know you could use rice to clean a hummingbird feeder!!!🤩 You need to grow watermelon, Janey. It’s so fun! Careful for squash bugs on your pumpkin vines. Love the video!
The most delicious winter squash is delacata. No need to peel, the skin is eatable. Slice in half, take out the seeds, cut in chunks or slices,, coat with olive or avocado oil, salt or other seasonings to your liking and bake 400° 30 minutes until soft. Hope you can grow it
Janey...I use a broom to brush the dead leaves out of my ivy. Might work for your jasmine.
Hey Janey! Paint your pig, paint your gas tank. You know enough talented people or have connections. Make it an interesting piece of "yard art". By the way, the black and white garden is really going to pop, soon!
Hi Janey, have you given any thought of making the propane tank an art project, possibly having a mural painted on it? Maybe you could reach out to your local high school art department or UC Davis art department for a class project? That way you could just tolerate it without figuring out ways to hide it until you move it. Just a thought.
❤ wow! The zigzag planter looks amazing. Can’t wait to see it in your June tour!
If this were my propane tank.... Temporary screening is a great idea, but if moving it is cost prohibitive, as I expect it probably is, I would look at strategic shrub plantings.
You have the space for large screening California natives like fremontodendron, manzanita, ceanothus or wild lilac which comes in soooo many shapes and sizes, and the native coffee berry which provides food and shelter for native birds.
You have the space for truly large shrubs, and if planted with the right spacing would need little to no maintenance or water once established and provide a lovely backdrop for the rest of your garden. Some tall but narrow grasses could screen it from the house while still providing refill access for the gas company.
Love the temporary corn maze idea, though. Making things work until the final thing goes in is part of the process.
I don't want to nitpick, but it would be a VERY good idea to use disposable gloves when applying the herbicide to the suckers!!! Chemicals like that are meant to be absorbed, and you sure don't want to get any on your hands!!
I also mix one cup of hot water with one cup of sugar, then add three cups of room temperature water, it will be ready right away. Also, there always seem to be an abundance of feeder's around here, so I just fill on of of those and swap immediately, no waiting for the impatient little buggers. lol.
So glad to learn about the Sucker Punch!
Proven Winner Summerific Hibiscus would look gorgeous surrounding your propane tank. 🌺🌺🌺
I loved mine so much I bought another one. Good suggestion!
What about painting the propane tank? Either a solid color to make it fade in the backgrouns or a cute whimsical mural to make it a "feature"
I just put sprayer on jet setting and spray directly into pipe and that clears the pump….works every time.😃
The front zig zag planter is beautiful!
Aww Jason … “I brought your parasol madam” I have used rice to clean other things like a hummingbird feeders but never thought of this! 😂 thank you! Envisioning the tank looking like Cinderella’s carriage 😊 cute!
Janey, that superbena white out is going to look gorgeous!! I love the corn and pumpkin idea!! Just think of how adorable your little pumpkin patch will be in the fall! 🎃🌽
Love your creative ideas of making lemonade out of lemons! The corn idea is great, fun and will taste so good. Growing pumpkins is a great idea to use your vacant space for now. Looking forward seeing the Verbena pop with color.
+ Being outside is healing 👏
Thank you so much for the stump and sucker Bonide mentions! Those are 2 things I can make good use of right now, instead of RoundUp!
Hi Janey! Love your garden. I have the morning glory bushes in large pots on my patio. These plants like it dry with very well draining soil. They are beautiful when blooming, the white flowers play beautifully with the silver foliage.
Glad that you got the pump working - it's really a sweet looking fountain. Smart to start your days earlier in the mornings in order to stay out of the intense heat. I'm silently complaining that this week here (MI) it will be in the 80's. 70's is my happy place. 😎
JASON ! Your the best 🌻💚🌻
Yes!! He's a keeper for sure.
Hello Janey, is there an artist in your family or friend group? Why you ask, they could paint something garden related and pretty on your pro pane tank.
Good to see you back in the garden as that is my favorite part of your channel! The garden is looking great…
You could also paint the propane tank in a receding colour.
Fountain pump trick. My pump's filter gets clogged with sediment/leaf debris/whatever, so every time I add water to the fountain I "back flush" the pump by putting the hose nozzle directly on top of the spouting water and flow water for a few seconds in the opposite direction. This seems to dislodge the gunk that has clogged the pump inlet and keeps it flowing. I guess you can do the banging thing, too 😂 but my method doesn't require you to handle the pump at all.
Well, good morning, glad to see Monty on the job. He only wants to help. Does not understand why he can't dig in the garden like you do. Sweet sweet boy . Love Love your planting music so restful have a blessed day the oklahoma gardener
Dusty miller around the black mondo grass would be striking!
The corn is best when you do succession planting to stagger the ripe dates.
Janie Fonzi’d the fountain. 😂
😊a fun variety of projects!
I covered my propane tank behind hollyhocks the greenery gets taller than it then the flowers 😍 but I make sure to cut stalks after seed pods form otherwise the whole yard will have hollyhocks the next year which i learned the hard way 😂😂
Rabbits enjoy superbena in my garden. The little fuzzy marauders have nibbled all the ones I planted in the ground to a nub.
Attention hummingbird lovers: I have used many types of hummer feeders. My favorite feeder is the WBU High Perch Hummingbird Feeder. Why? Because it's easy to clean. Use the little WBU port brush for cleaning which gets inside the feeder holes. Please don't use red dye as it will kill the hummingbirds. Thanks for feeding the hummers!
Re doing previous comment just a note of caution. Be careful about pouring dry rice around your sink. years ago our daughter poured some dry rice down the sink it swelled up. We had to have a plumber come and unplug our Plumbing, the dry rice method is a great way to clean your humming bird feeders, though.
I have hummingbird feeders now with wide mouths. Which makes cleaning them so much easier. They're not as pretty as yours though just your regular feeders.
Maybe you could strain the rice water mixture as you're pouring it in the sink and then discard the rice in the trash. Just a thought.
Very productive fun video
I’m in Mid Missouri and have a propane tank. In our area you are not allowed to plant things around it so that the service person (who comes and fills it) has access. I also can only paint it white or silver. I wanted to paint it black…but that’s a no no because that color absorbs heat. I wish I could do what you’re doing ;-)
The addition to the black & white bed should look beautiful! Question: Have you thought about using the metal panels you used to room in the shade garden to do the same around the propane tank? You could plant an evergreen vine on it.
Janie, I think you scored huge with planting the verbena whiteout! That will definitely do the trick and look gorgeous with the contrasting black mondo grass! They do great here in TX, where it's so hot and dry. Plus, way to go with the crazy propane tank, a bonus with masking it, and getting getting food crops to enjoy!
To get your fountain working, flush the opening with a jet of water spray from your hose. The back pressure will clean out the pump. Also the pump usually has a filter you have to clean. I use small amount of Clorox let it sit , then rinse well with water. This should work for you......good luck!!🥰
My Morning glory takes 3+ months to bloom but once it does it goes til frost.
Great solution!
I make my feeder food the same way.....good idea with the rice. I use very narrow brushes.
morning glory blooms late summer
With the recipe just add 1 cup sugar to 2 cups hot water and melt then add to 2 cups cold water then you don’t need to wait
The impeller is probably plugged. Bang it to dislodge the clog.
I use canna lillies to hide my propane tank they are absolutely gorgeous
Glad you’re feeling better ❤️🌸
Too funny! 😅
The stump killer works great. I used it on some fennel that got sooo big I couldn’t pull it out. So i cut it off and used the stump killer.
Well, rice is a good idea. Here’s what the Audubon society says about using dish soap to clean, hummingbird feeders,. Cleaning with hot tap water works fine, or use a weak vinegar solution. Avoid using dish soaps, as this can leave harmful
Wow didn’t know that trick 👍🏻
Lmho, frustration banging, that's so hilarious, because it did the trick!
I think the superbena whiteout was a perfect choice for this bed! Morning glories do not like to be fertilized. If you did biotone when you panted them they may be pushing foliage instead of blooms. I still think one of those monster grass plants (I think it may have been a penisetum) that you had at your last house would be a beautiful solution to camouflage the propane tank. Loved the fountain cleaning technique you employed!😆
Will good morning Janey. Just a note of caution. Be careful using dry rise around your sink. Years ago our daughter chord rice, d*** the sink and it spelled up so bad. We had to have a plumber. Come unstick, our plumbing, just a little note of caution.
Pumpkins are so much fun especially with kids. My kids love to harvest our pumpkins every year. Fun!
Pedestal base under the lovely birdbath to make it more substantial and maybe easier to see from inside the house? Easy for me to spend your money because pedestals aren't cheap $$$
, but they are beautiful!! 😍
Good morning! Glad you are feeling better. I ordered the brush attachment for the drill to scrub my bird baths with. Thanks to your friend Robbie.😊
Janey, you need to check with the propane company first before you plant. They have space regulations for the filling of your tank.
Hi Janey I love your hummingbird feeder, planting around the tank to hide it is a good idea
Hi Janey, you might try spraying the spent blossoms on your Star Jasmine with a water hose with a little pressure to knock them off. It won’t harm the other blossoms. I don’t like the look of the brown blossoms either.
For the pump is getting gunked-up. Try putting a piece of open cell foam around it. You can even cut a hole the size of the pump to help keep the gunk out of it making a filter. Good luck!
Hi Janey, i use a toothbrush to clean my hummingbird feeders! And i use 1c boiling water plus 3 c cold tap water ...that way birds dont have to wait so long. 😊
its going to be beautiful. those are pretty pumpkins, can't wait to see them. the kids will have a ball with them. thanks for sharing. hope you have a great day!!!
I love the idea of hiding the lp tank. It would have been fun to plant different kinds of sunflowers. Love your garden space.
I can’t wait to see pumpkins in the fall
Glad that you are hopefully feeling better - I think the corn & pumpkins are a great idea - maybe I should plant some - hmmm? Thank-you & I hope you have a great day today!
Janey, the ‘black and white’ bed looks so much better and I can’t wait to see the superbena white out in bloom! I planted some superbena pink cashmere this spring and it is so pretty and hardy. The corn and pumpkins are a great idea. They will look good this summer and fall! The cottage around your propane tank sounds so cute but as others have said please check your local ordinances first. BTW I have a love hate for my fountains… always something with them 🤬!
Have you thought about putting your Dig, Plant, Water, Repeat Log on the propane tank? Then just plant some low growing flowers around it. Just an idea!
I can't wait to see everything grow! Hope you left a spot for propane fill access.
Hope you feel better soon 🙏
Thankyou for the hummingbird feeder tip. I did learn a valuable tip. Now I can provide them their favorite feeder not mine. I know they love one with a skinny narrow opening.
Hope you’re feeling better now place is looking great filling in fast getting plants everywhere between your perennials on your annuals and yes it’s gonna get hot it’s Monday and I know tomorrow Wednesday on for few days we’re gonna start to pass the hundreds as well, Hope to see all the seedlings popping up soon and some green reactor and covering up that propane tank it’s gonna look great
You need to clean the pump intake and impeller once in a while. Basically theres a little plastic piece with fins (like a fan) inside that has a magnet and it slides into a hole. It then spins in there. You can usually take off part of the case and take out the impeller and rinse everything out. Just google how to clean a impeller on a fish tank pump. Most of them work very similar. I guess if you can't open it, smashing works too haha
I have that same hummingbird feeder! So I use a bottle brush to clean the feeder bottles (long wire with bristles that I guess are used for actual bottles), and that seems to work pretty well. I've heard that in the summer it's good to have their sugar water solution more watery to help hydrate them (like 4 to one) and then in the winter when they need more energy, 3 to 1 is good. Great idea to cover the propane tank with corn & pumpkins! (although I still think it might be cute to have the girls paint the tank with flowers & bugs & stuff) Can't wait to see how things look in the fall..
Good idea about the white verbena, corn and pumpkins. You will soon have green where you had brown
also, attract/nourish hummingbirds with native wildflowers..., natural perches (shrubs), etc. thank you for sharing
Corn maze !!!
