Haven't listened to this in over 40 years, but it's still as good as ever. Bless this man and his gift - he's touched a lot of people deeply and his music still lives inside of all of us, obviously.

Yusuf, Cat Stevens influenced my life dramatically. I learned how to play guitar at 8 years old so I could sing the songs. Longer Boats was the first song of yours I learned. I am 52 now and have written and recorded hundreds of songs thanks to the musical path you opened up for all of us. I still perform your music. "Just call me Jzero."

What town do you play or live in, David? I'd like to hear you. Cat was one of my influences, along with Pentangle / Moody Blues and others. But this album -- which I think went over everyone's head -- was tremendous, for me.

This masterpiece is timeless. I spent hours delving into his lyrics while marveling at his turning of a phrase with unrivalled depth and clarity. To call this man merely a genius isn't giving him his due.

The 70s , when there was no script written for how albums should be produced and everything and anything went . Such a progressive artist ; every album was so unique and different with new instruments and concepts . His first real concept album back to back .

Jzero is still one of the happiest tunes in my head even though when I tried to dance to it I couldn't keep rhythm to save my life. Loved this album since I first heard it--and the illos were adorable. I so wanted the children's book that never came out.

      It (Jzero) might have been difficult to dance to because it's not a 1-2-3-4 count. It's a waltz - 1-2-3, 1-2-3 . . .

Brilliant, underrated album. One of my favorites from you. The first time I listened to it, it took me for surprise. I was a young fan, and only had negative online reviews to go off of before experiencing it. When I finally found numbers at my local record store, I was simply just excited to get closer to completing my Cat record collection. I went on to play the album on repeat for the next several days, falling in love with it. Thank you Yusuf.

I love you Yusuf , like so much , you were my childhood's mate , you still now my "Now's" friend hhh , because of you I started being interested about loving and learning english for more to understand the meaning of your songs ('cus they tell innocent kids stories) and so I started get interested in all old school songs after a while , especially folk rock like you play or George Harrison or Simon and Garfunkel , all great writers with polite Deep words , I guess ... Much love , thanks # Respect Brother , you're a true artist ❤ .

"NUMBERS" is Cat Steven's spacey version of "Tea for the Tillerman" as far as I'm concerned. It has the melancholy of Sad Lisa in Novim's Nightmare, the upbeat tick of "Miles from Nowhere." In "Majik of Majiks, " there is a parallel theme on journeying found in "On the Road to Findout," but with perhaps a more bleak reality-- "Where have my brothers gone, why I don't see them about? They're all around me now, and keeping me out..." A real gem on the album is"Jzero"- a whimsical song perhaps about Cat himself- takes you right back to the folk roots of much of his earlier songs, such as "Portobello Road." There's so much lovely instrumentation to be found here as well (I advise listening to this album on vinyl, with a good set of headphones),and just enjoy the genius of Cat Stevens and Paul Samwell-Smith creating musical magic. "Home" is a sweet, soft toned tune that elicits memories of the children found on the cover of Tea-with the old man cheerfully enjoying the priceless laughter; taking us back to "Where do the Children Play?" The final stitch in this melodic "tapestry" comes with "Monad's Anthem"- a highly charged symphony brought to a crescendo ending with the sweet, high octave vocals of the Canadian Boy's choir--unique and imaginative! I cannot count the number of times I have listened to Numbers--but, Who's keeping track?

    CAT STEVENS: NUMBERS (“Ster-Lized”)
Cat’s best, and most popular albums might be Teaser and the Firecat and Tea for the Tillerman, but his last three (Numbers, Izitso and Back to Earth) were and will always be my all-time favourites. Critics often praise Catch Bull at Four and Buddha and the Chocolate Box and although I agree that they are very good albums - I much prefer Numbers.
Numbers is Cat’s most mystical and perhaps strangest album of all. The journey starts with Whistlestar - an up-lifting colourful instrumental, with a Latino flavour (this is where things got funkier). Novim’s Nightmare is Cat at his melancholic best (this is right up there with Sad Lisa as far as I’m concerned). Majik of Majik’s is one of his most powerful ballads (those intro chords alone are better than most popular music of the past 20 years). Then “the truth will come to you” on Drywood (check out the backing singers, and the crackling wood outro). Banapple Gas is outright fun and humour with more Latino vibes (“Certified”). Land O’ Freelove and Goodbye is wistful. Jzero is classic Cat (is it him-self he sings about in the third-person I wonder?). Then the searching, Home and finally the bizarre almost megalomaniacal Monad’s Anthem (listen to that beautiful boys’ choir).
Critics forever point to the confusing concept of Numbers, but they miss the point. Concept or no concept these songs stand alone as individual works, and they stand the test of time. Do those critics point out the same for Pete Townshend’s Lifehouse, or Brian Wilson’s Smile? So why is it such a problem for Cat Stevens? And besides, the concept includes wonderful pictures (drawn by Cat) and cute characters (the original record had a lavish booklet). Why not listen to the tunes and just admire the art-work?
Just on the strength of Majik of Majiks, Novim’s Nightmare, Jzero and Home this is a very good album. Add the rest of the songs and it rises to excellence. There’s also less of Cat’s growling delivery that he does on songs like Sitting and Music, and less of the petulance of “I want you no more” on Bad Penny. You’re still left with the spiritual conflict though, no more so than on Majik of Majiks (“go on and let him in”) mixed with the cynical refrain (“they said”). But it’s been toned down a notch here.
This is beautifully crafted, melodic music and the production and instrumentation is first-class. This is where Cat started using synthesiser sounds (continuing what he had started with Angelsea) and this is where he goes from folk hero to mystic.
    10/10 A+

This one and his "Foreigner" albums are two I just don't like. Tried for decades, but they are tedious to run through. Still, in-between, he made some unbelievable albums. For me, his last great Cat Stevens' album was "Izitso" from 1977. But my all-time favourite of his remains "Teaser and the Firecat" from 1971.
