Personally I own 2 snowblowers. #1) is a single stage that I use if the driveway is covered with slush; or if my wife is home alone she uses the single stage… at around 100lbs it’s easier for her to use. For my 2-stage I have an Ariens HydroPro 28” that (the way I modified it) weighs a whopping 350lbs! In 2-stage snowblowers I prefer 24-28” width (for easier maneuverability with the biggest engine that I can afford. Mine is 420cc which is the biggest I could find. In very deep snow I prefer to cut into the snow using only 6-12” of the cab width, which puts less stress on the drive track; yet still throws the snow well over 50 feet!

Buying a unit based on engine size/horsepower is the most underrated tip. A snowblower is basically a pump. The more power, the more it can move in a given amount of time. Housing size and features are all after that. I have an Ariens platinum 30” with the 414 cc motor. It has unstoppable power in a full width of the heaviest snow, but is probably more than most would need. I would say somewhere in the 300s cc range is a sweet spot for power vs price. a higher 200 would suffice for most situations, but start struggling at the end of the driveway. A 220 or 197 is pretty worthless, and you’d be better off checking under the couch cushions for a little more money.
All great tips JB. I would even add that if someone is a newbie to snowblowers they should buy a machine from a reputable dealer. I constantly see poorly assembled machines at big box stores. For example, last week I was at Lowe's and all the machines on display had loose handlebars. If the handlebars are flopping around then there is no way the controls are properly set up. An inexperienced shopper just might buy a problem without even knowing it before the snow flys. There was even a machine on display that was clearly used... and damaged! 🤦

I agree with you on this JB, I have an Ariens Deluxe 28, which is for the big snowfalls. I also have a Troy Bilt single stage 7hp 4 cycle snowblower for the lighter snowfalls. You can't go wrong with having more than you need in this situation. A bigger machine can do both little and larger snow removal, but whereas a little machine can not. Thanks again for your time and information. I truly appreciate it. Hopefully, I'll get some snow this year lol.

I bought a snowblower in '96 from Home Depot made by Dynamark Plus, it's an 8 HP Tecumseh Snow King engine, electric start, 6 spd and it's been the best snowblower you could ask for. Its the easiest machine to start even in very cold weather, I rarely ever use the electric start as I don't have to. I've only ever had to do the basic maintenance on it over the years, spark plug, oil changes, the odd belt over the years, general lubrication, cable tension, is just been an awesome snowblower. I think Dynanmark was made by Murray. It's been the best $800 CDN I've ever spent.

I just recently bought this old 26 inch Gardenway 2 stage snowblower for $300 dollars and it was a really good deal. Sure, it did need a bit of love when I first got it, I had to put on new skid shoes, give it a much needed oil change, and rewire the headlight, but other than that the thing is in pretty decent condition. I also just posted a walk around video of it on my channel.

another tip I found is that the small private shop owners get a little bit better quality machines than the big box stores (mass produced for high sales=cheaper)...i have a 2004 Ariens 9HP that still kicks butt in Central NY, home of the 120 inch annual snowfall seasons...I actually have a 2 stage EGO that is pretty solid but the gas Ariens is just a bit more powerful or hearty for the heavy, end of the driveway, wet snows...the lack of gas though and hard starts and clogged carbs and bad fuel I could do without so USE hi test gasoline with ZERO ethanol

Wouldnt mind meeting up and chatting with you about this because youve got some dedication and skill to taking care of all your equipment. Crazy how im in my early 20s and people my age or older dont do the basic maintenence! Great video JB we think exactly the same. A wise man once told me in my early 20s BUY ONCE CRY ONCE!!! now i just turned 50 and i still have almost every tool I have ever purchased. My wife still gives me a hard time every time I buy a tool or piece of machinery, but I will never change my ways, especially now that my kids are grown and moved out. No more help around the house.

I said i would report back how my two stage snowblower was doing when I wrote three years ago from Toro. I have the driveway that is over a tenth of a mile long on a mountain in CT. We always get snow. Last year we got 24 inches of snow in 12 hours. That is the most snow we got in the last three years. It worked fine, but I did snow blow it twice. It was a bigger snowblower with 18 inch capacity and over 10 horsepower. No problems yet and we do have a few cables. The self-contained and oiled auger has worked well. I was not sure how that would do after your earlier videos, but sticks and other things don't phase it and I have had to refill the reservoir once after 2 years. It actually works pretty well. I was told Ariens, Toro, and Honda make good snowblowers.

In all my years of computing, I have NEVER commented on a video until today. This guy is amazing and every word he says is true. Don't go cheap folks ... when you see that 2 ft pile of slush at the end of your driveway, you'll regret not having power on your side.

The slush monster got me this year and the plow driver left me with a small mountain of ice all along the width of my 3 car wide drive. The Honda single stage is all I will need they say and throws snow a good distance ,it does if it is fluffy. It is not worth a darn when snow is wet. So after 4 years of fighting the plow driver and his need to bury the end of my drive I am going to a two stage next year and I will be giving the plow driver the bird. We get 40 plus inches of snow in the Toledo area, not a lot but enough.
Get that two stage and youll be all set
I like your view on buying something that is built tough. It does pay off because I’m living proof my snow thrower is 30 years old and it’s been used in some very heavy snows over the years. I saw there were some Troy Bilt in the video but they are not what they use to be when Garden Way made them. The Troy Bilt that I use will still out work most of any new one today.

I'm not impressing too many people with this, but I decided to be a guinea pig and ended up getting a 24" electric dual stage blower last year. We get a decent amount of snow in this part of Canada (around 120 inches), but we only have a 2-car driveway. I'm not too optimistic about the longevity of this thing, but so far so good... If it doesn't work out, I'll probably get an entry-level 24" Ariens.

When sizing your snowblower, take into consideration the narrowest pathway you would want to use your snowblower on. If it's 24", it makes no sense to get that monster 30" snowblower. You'll end up shovelling that narrow pathway by hand. Sure it might take a few more passes on the main driveway with the narrower snowblower, but at least it will minimize any hand shovelling.

JB I’m a life long WNYer and when I moved to Buffalo my dad told me to buy the biggest snow blower I could afford and I wouldn’t regret it. I’ve got a 24” Platinum SHO and it’s everything I need in the snow belts of Buffalo and I’m so happy for taking my dad’s advice.

I moved from a mild winter state to a heavy winter state in 2020 and I knew next to nothing about snowblowers, but I knew I was going to need one. I went to Home Depot and bought a Troy Built Storm 2410 and had buyers remorse after the first winter using it. It blows powder snow perfectly, but the heavy wet snow and snow that has an ice cap on it the machine struggles with and clogs like crazy. I don’t like the plastic chute and the Chinese knockoff of a Honda engine that comes with it. I wished I had spent the money on a higher quality and more robust machine at the time because like all things you get what you pay for.
Make sure they didnt install the augers backwards.
I bought the Power smart 212cc(You did a Vid on it)? I am in Toronto! I greased/sprayed/Lubricated/Anti Seized Everything you said on your Video.(Did the 20 Minute break in)on the Engine. We have only had One Snow Blowing DAY so far Jan 14th? It was about 5-6 Inches. I left the Speed @ 3 to start the break in period. It worked like a champ! I did 100 feet of Sidewalk just to keep up the break in! too! If you take too much of a second Bite most blowers will bog down? I think 1/4 to 1/2 bites are best in Snow that is 3/4 of the height of any Blower? The Blower's Auger can't keep up? ANYWAYS great Vids!

Need advice. I have a 400’ concrete winding drive with a steep section about 50’ with a grade as much as 18.5 degrees. I live in KY with annual snowfall of only 8-10” average snowfall but when it snows, I’m trapped on my hill till it thaws with car at bottom. So, I’m looking at UTV with snow blade or an inline Toro single stage snowblower model#39915. I’d rather go with the blower to save a lot of cash but is my driveway grade too steep. Any advice helps. I’ve never owned or used either by the way. Thanks!
Hey Mike! To me it seems like there’s really two things you need to think about here! First the steepness of you let driveway. If it will be a chore to push that snowblower up your driveway. It will also take A LOT longer to do that 400 feet. You’re gonna be at it for a while. The UTV would climb better and get it down faster. The UTV is buying your time back. I’d be considering that! 👍

Thinking of buying new machine, do you have a recommendation for someone with arthritic shoulders, 3 car driveway, some storms dump 8 inches but biggest problem is when the plow truck comes through. My current snow blower can’t handle anything at the end of the driveway. Was going to buy a 2 stage just to get through the ridge from the plows. I know you will recommend Ariens, but which one would you recommend? Thanks.😊
Hey Lynn! You got it my friend! Ariens is the way to go. I would say any model with the auto turn feature will help you out. My 32” ariens is heavy but with the auto turn is handles beautifully turning on a dime. It actually makes the unit feel lighter and easier to move. I believe the deluxe and up have it. 👍

You also don't want to over-buy on your snow thrower. I live in central OH, and purchased an Ariens 24" Platinum, because the previous year we got a heavy snowstorm that was tough on my single stage 22" 4 stroke Craftsman (but it cleared it all!). The Ariens is/was a great unit, but in the 8 years I owned it, I hardly ever needed the capabilities it had. Actually for the majority of the snows we get (2-4"), and some slushy stuff, it was worse than my single stage. (2 stages do better with a little deeper snow) I sold it and went with a Toro Snowmaster, which has it's own pros and cons. It is much more appropriate for the snowfalls we get, and the quick chute joystick is better than any other chute control out there...period. Never had any issue in the years that I've owned it, never a problem with the "dreaded plastic chute", which has never clogged. It is much lighter, quicker and easier to handle, but it's not a perfect machine either. (It's Personal Pace is great in light snow but sucks in deeper stuff) For me and where I live, a GOOD single stage is probably the best choice, as it it way faster, easier to maneuver, and can handle anything (the lighter typical snows) that we get. For a bigger storm, just don't wait until the snow stops. Instead, hit it midway during the storm, and then when it's over, clear the rest. For me it's about 15-20 minutes max. As you said, what is right for you really depends on where you live, how much and what type of snow you get, and the size of your driveway as well as it's slope. In my case, with the snow I get, with a 60' long 3 car flat driveway, a big heavy 2 stage was overkill, way slower than a nimble SS machine, and didn't clean down to the pavement as well. So yeah, choose wisely...a bigger machine is not always the right choice.

@@LL-mt2nz It does pretty good...much better than a 2 stage because it's augers are high speed, but not as good as a powerful (212cc or so) single stage, where the rubber paddles can "squeegee" the pavement. Of course if it's thick, deep slush, a SS may not throw it as far, or may even clog because it's really trying to scoop it all up whereas the Snowmaster only has an 8" or so rubber section across the center of its auger and does not "squeegee" as well, but the high speed and power (I have the 824QXE w/250cc engine) keep it from bogging down too badly.

A couple of years back, my parents bought a nice JD snowblower. Turns out it's a rebranded Murray snowblower. It has a motorized discharge shoot. Which works pretty well. Until the switchs stop working properly. The switches need to be removed, and contacts bent to make better contact.

I don’t get 50”… I actually haven’t used mine in 2 years. BUT every so often we do get a blizzard… and I have health issues. So clearing that berm at the end of the driveway from the plow definitely requires a real machine!

It worked great on the old plastic chutes. With the newer metal chutes that are heavier and stiffer the plastic joystick doesn't seem to be quite up to the job. Needs an update IMO to something stronger.

I purchased an Ariens 30 inch Platinum SHO December 5. Should be delivered by December 19 . I currently own a 2010 John Deere 928 E . What had me making this move is the auto turn Ariens has , much easier to turn . Mine is hard to turn . I oedered the poly skids and the 20 lb. weight kit . Plus Ariens has a 5 year warranty that is free till the end of 2013 .

Great rundown. My driveway is bluestone or sta-pak depending on where you’re from. When everything is hard and frozen, my Ariens kicks ass, but its traction struggles if the surface is soft and/or wet due to previous rain or mix. Would chains work for this? Or do I need a new unit with track drive? Thx bro
Tracks would really help because you can adjust the height of your snowblower. You could do chains but they could dig in too much.

I'm not sure how many people caught your hint as to which manufacturer makes the best snow blower. The hint was which one you compared all the others to. That orange paint job made it obvious to me. Areins makes the best snow blowers on the market.

Had a little 4hp ariens . Thing must weighed 200 lbs but would throw snow like nobody's business. Slowly became a warm weather machine but couldn't find a guy to bring it back😢
Ariens has been my go to for 2 stage. For single stage, nobody beats Toro.

I have a 28" Snapper 2009 model with manual chute and cast iron gearbox. It was listed as commercial grade but is far from it. It didn't come with heated handles. The free wheel system is only on one wheel. It only rotates to the left, not to the right. So that results in a lot of man handling the machine. My Brother-in-law's lesser model built in Canada blows my snapper away. Mine has a very difficult adjustment for the speed settings. It is so finicky and poorly made that you are liable to jump speeds. My Brother-in-law's also seems to have a flywheel that I believe helps with the forward Momentum. I lost faith in Snapper due to the deficiencies in my machine.

auger diameter also makes a huge difference in deep snow… the smaller the diameter the more snow is going to pile up in front or spill off as you go down your driveway

i buy used snowblowers and fix and buy whatever they need. Usually 1 stage is always almost all the time new carb,scraper bar and belt .@ stage usually a carb and new belt one 2 stage had to rebuld the gearbox

I have an old Craftsman 23/5HP grey/red units. It's rusted up bad but still starts easy and runs well. Was free, dad's neighbour threw it out 25+ year ago cuz (it wouldn't start) so he bought a new one, yeah, one of those guys. Well fresh gas and it's started and has ran since.
Came into some cash this year so in addition to a new Honda lawn mower was thinking of new blower. In southern Ontario, honestly, our snowfall amounts have fallen over the last decade or so. I'd say our average dump is 6-8" these days, drifts of course can get up to a few feet here and there. Have been toying with single stage for the lighter weight/smaller width and smaller storage foot print in the shed but I think the stuff at the end of the driveway from the city plows would be too much for it. Not a fan of paddle replacements either.

What are your thoughts on the battery 2 stage blowers(Ego) for mild use? I am the luckiest guy because my neighbour shovels my front walk while I’m working. I only need to use the snowblower for the driveway and back walk when it snows enough.
Hey Enzo’s, we’ll they’re not expensive, built with lower quality controls and after a few short years those expensive batteries have to be replaced. A smaller gas model will put live that battery 5X. Thanks for watching

i live in northwest ohio snow fall is hard to predict here last year everyone went out and bought blowers thinking we was getting a lot of snow according to predictions...this year they predict above temps and less snow .Well they was wrong last year and it wouldnt surprise me we get a lot of snow this year lol

FYI don't be ramming it into hard pack snow no matter what type you get, break down with shovel to get hard pack snow once broken down then blow, unless you okay have replace shear pin a lot and or damaging machine

Made this mistake. Bought a single stage. On smaller snowfalls it was fine until I dealt with the end of my driveway (corner lot on a main thoroughfare) which means lots of packed snow and ice. Buying an Ariens 2 stage Friday.

I might've over-bought. We get 33" average annual snow but I picked up a used 2-stage Troy-Bilt Storm 2400 for $250 locally. We'll see if I use that a lot or not.

Better advice is to stay away from the " Big box" stores and support your Independent local dealers. They tend to have the better stuff that the lawn and snow guys use. You'll pay a little more, but you definitely won't be buying plastic overload. Also, lowes and Home Depot don't service them when something breaks.

Home Depot & Lowes ask manufacturers to build snowblowers at certain price points. The manufacturers then design one to that price point. That is why some seem incredibly cheap. The stores want snow mobiles at those price points.

The Ariens 24" Deluxe makes this snow blower with the larger, 254cc engine. The 208cc classic engine is $400 cheaper, but the ability to move more snow is worth the extra $400.

I had a 1963 Ariens 10ML60 snowblower and sold it when I inherited my parents Craftsman snowblower. I really missed that Ariens when we had the Christmas blizzard last year

The battery toros are built a little better than the egos. If you like plastic go with ego. If you like stronger metal components go with the toro.
I have a 60ft long, 2 car width driveway... But I only get 42 average inches of snow yearly.. I'm debating getting a single stage vs 2 stage. Talk me into one!!
A two stage will clear it faster especially at the end of the driveway where it’s heavy and wet! Less wear and tear on your body as you’ll be pushing that single stage all over the place. The two stage pushes itself!

Also you want to see a friction disc transmission.... Some crap is coming out with plastic housing multi gear transmissions and they are ungodly garbage! And buy name brand, cheap chinesium snowblowers are far from economical; they will break easily and have virtually no sourcing for replacement parts!

I hate all the plastic junk now. I'll keep my 1984 and 2015 Ariens blowers. Here's something not mentioned in your video. Better blowers like Ariens and Honda are made in first world countries. Lots of these cheap Snow Joe and EGO type things are made overseas where child labor is rampant. I don't want to support that with my money.

Very disappointed in your review. Living in New England and having owner 5 snowblowers, the most important thing to look for is HORSEPOWER. You can have the best augers and impellers, but if the machine is under-powered, you are SCREWED. Manufacturers play games now and do not disclose HP, which is a disgrace. Buy more machine (cc size) than you thin u need. MOST machines are under-powered as the manufacturers don't want to spend the money on larger, more powerful engines. You should do a video on cc sizes of various manufacturers and the corresponding HP.
