Can you believe that Tichina and Tisha are 15 and 16 here? Also, I feel like Michelle gets the shaft when it comes to recognition b/c she wasn't on Martin, but she's killing those top notes...
+CDawg I know!! I always wondered why we didnt hear more from Michelle. You ever heard "Glory to God" by the Boys Choir of Harlem (featuring Leaders of the New School)? She sings adlibs on that. And you gotta show Tichina some love for holding down those bottom notes.
+CDawg Lies. Tisha Campbell was born in 1968, and Tichina Arnold was born in 1969. This particular movie came out in 1986, so that would make them 18 and 17 respectfully.
Shoot! You're right! And also, Sed1er, it's the other way around. Little Shop of Horrors referenced Hercules. If you are going when the movies came out, then it's Hercules ref. LSoH, but five ladies in Hercules are muses, which were a common element of story telling back then.
I just realized that their names are ronnette, crystal and chiffon. Their named after three famous girl groups the ronnettes, the crystals and the chiffons 😁
It makes SOOO much sense that Alan Menken wrote the songs for Hercules and This. The Trio in this movie is just like the Muses from Hercules- unbelievably good.
I know that the lead, the fairest and slimest, is Gina, b/c she played Gina on Martin, a very funny sitcom in the 90s that really needs to come back on Hulu.
Introducing the magical teleporting girls that nobody seems to notice even though they are singing loudly and are wearing noticeably clothes and are dancing in the rain
I wonder how many viewers know why the three chorus girls are Crystal, Chiffon and Ronette. If the budget and the arrangement had had room for a fourth, she would almost certainly been named Shirelle.
Sky Vins The Crystals, the Chiffons the Ronettes and the Shirelles were the premier groups of the 1960's girl-group era. You can look them up on UA-cam.
Steve Rush Good tip- They are the singers of hits like "One Fine Day", "He's Sure the Boy I Love", "Da Doo Ron Ron", "Be My Baby", and a ton of other great songs. Give them a listen. :)
Dude! It’s impossible to see all the good stuff on time. I’m really glad you can finally enjoy though. This is a perfect movie. Just in case, check out The Jerk, Sleeper, Dogfight, and After Hours. You’ll thank me later. In your head, at least.
Try getting three girls today to sing and harmonize like this, walk down stairs in sync, perform choreography, and stay focused on a camera all at the same time. These ladies have always been my fave aspect of this movie.
To be fair, the were lipsyncing to a studio track. There's too much ambient noise in an action shot to really sing and move. It's opening montage is also a multiple take shoot. It probably took several days. Also notice they weren't getting wet; they were under a moving shelter. Note the lack of water drops around their feet. They maybe got a little spay on their arms but wigs, costuming and makeup take hours and they were not going to let the performers get wet to prevent another take.
+lohphat of course... But I'm still speaking to the overall musicality, blending, and strength of the vocals they recorded in a studio for this track as well. So, sure, it is a bit of a stretch that things would be this perfect without a track or other takes, but I still doubt three girls today could give us the same punch with the same quality of tools and production in general. Also, the water effect wasn't a logistics concern, it's to keep in the theme of these ladies being the Greek Chorus of the film, totally unaffected by the environment and people around them.
My ultimate film ever!!! No film comes close to this with nostalgia, vocals....everything! this film is the reason I became obsessed with strong ass black girl power vocals. It holds a massive place in my heart.
They sounded so good and they were so young. This is a great song with so many good parts. That "something's coming down...down the street for youuu." I love how Tisha hit that part 😍 1:50
They're standing under a device keeping them out of the rain while the rain machine pours down on them. The camera is placed below the device and and it looks like they're walking in the rain without getting wet.
They originally wanted them to have spotlights whenever they were on camera, but the light spilled onto the other characters, so this was the compromise :))
That's a special effect because they are the "Greek Chorus" in the film (I love this musical, so that's just a factoid I know I learned about it long ago, but I can't remember where I learned it. I'm sure it can be Googled). Notice that no one really sees THEM, but they see others, telling the story, singing in the same spaces, flipping-off a passing car... a car that might not have almost hit them had the driver seen them. They are in the world but not of it. "Mystical" characters that just help move the story along and also provide breaks of fascinating commentary :)
They did this play at my older sister's school. Ever since, we'd forgotten about it. Until I started singing this song a few weeks ago. Her response was "why would you get me started?" And so now, we sing it every night at the top of our lungs until mom tells us to be quiet XD
During the Thanksgiving episode while singing Pass the Peas, Pam said that "Gina tends to sing over her all the time". I think that was a thinly veiled reference to everytime they've had to sing together including here. Martin show was really good with inside jokes
A half hour, to an hour ago, I replayed this video so many times and at certain parts as well. Their voices are/were out of this world. So soulful, harmonious, powerful, and strong!!!
i always loved how space morphed into the oily water and was smashed by the bottle. It looked even more convincing in VHS quality. I watched this movie so many times at my grandmom's house after church.
Tisha Campbell (Soprano), Tichina Arnold (Contralto) and Michelle Weeks (Alto). Michelle and Tisha switch parts briefly on, "Everbody better beware" and "Better watch your back if you can" to allow Michelle to go into head register. Michelle's head voice is higher than Tisha's, but Tisha's has a louder belting voice as a Soprano than Michelle does.. The Soprano carries the melody of every song (usually).
That harmony by the 3 singers is out of this world!!!! They would have been sensational had they been in the early 60;s, The music by them is of that time period. THANKS.
oh my god i havent wached this in such a long time it brings back so many great memories to my otherwise dull and depressing life i cant help but smile every time i hear it now thanx so much
I really had to watch this video a few times for each girl because Michelle's top sounds like Tisha and her bottom sounds like Tichina. All three girls are blowing the roof off but Michelle's range and versatility are amazing here. Their harmony is a tour de force. So young and so powerful. Tisha was a freshman at Newark (NJ) Arts High when this was filmed.
Even as a kid, one thing I found fascinating about these ladies, aside from their killer vocals, is how they sort of seemed to wander in and out of reality all the time. Sometimes they seem outside the events and sometimes part of them. Even before I knew what diagetic and non-diagetic verse in literature was , I sort of innately knew it through these girls...and if I ever come across anything like that in verse, a musical, or play, in the back of my mind these girls always sort of spring up as the standard :)
Can you believe that Tichina and Tisha are 15 and 16 here? Also, I feel like Michelle gets the shaft when it comes to recognition b/c she wasn't on Martin, but she's killing those top notes...

Those girls nailed that song HARD!
YES!!!!!
Rachel Richter what’s the names of them all?
Yes
@@anon01x83 Tichina Arnold, Tisha Campbell and Michelle Weeks.
They remind me so much of the ladies in Hercules
Haha I was just thinking that. I know two of them are real actresses
***** Except Hercules had four ladies hahaha!
Hercules did a kind of Homage/reference to this.
bilingualtongue Actually Hercules had five
Shoot! You're right! And also, Sed1er, it's the other way around. Little Shop of Horrors referenced Hercules. If you are going when the movies came out, then it's Hercules ref. LSoH, but five ladies in Hercules are muses, which were a common element of story telling back then.
You can hear Tisha loud and clear.
Shon9tilR Her voice isnt the best, but overpowers the other two in every song
Mr3D SMP Truth😂
@coltonphillips725 And yet you're the one calling her a 'halfbreed'...
@coltonphillips725 actually both of her parents are black. One of them is bi racial
Her voice us just louder, but Tichina and Michelle has the best vocals and voices.. Doesn't take away from Singing ass.
Chills. They sound so good it ain't even funny. No one sings like this anymore, no one.
Kai?
MsChinnBK99 I totally agree...unless you put Hyorin, Park Bom, and Ailee in once in a lifetime song that would be dope.
Ms Chin exactly
what are you talking about? this movie is from the 80's/90's set in the 60's, not the actual 60's. plus don't dismiss broadway actors like that
Ms Chin you do know that this movie was made in 1986. ignorant.
I just realized that their names are ronnette, crystal and chiffon. Their named after three famous girl groups the ronnettes, the crystals and the chiffons 😁
Yeah I know, they are all ridiculously talented.
+Emily Grace I knew that about Crystal and Ronnette, but I always thought Chiffon was named after the cake.
+Emily Grace Wow, cool find!
Trisha was on a few episodes of Everybody Hates Chris, and they're best friends in real life:)
+Shon9tilR .....They starred in the televison show 'Martin' back in the 90's.
It makes SOOO much sense that Alan Menken wrote the songs for Hercules and This. The Trio in this movie is just like the Muses from Hercules- unbelievably good.
Lewis Edwards i knew this sounded familiar
Omgggg that does make sense!!!!
That's what I said after seeing the play at school
Their names are Crystal, Ronnette, and Chiffon. They were named after girl groups from the 60s.
who's who?
From left to right when they're standing against that wall when they first walk out: Ronnette, Chiffon, Crystal.
so which 1 is pam and which 1 is gina?
I know that the lead, the fairest and slimest, is Gina, b/c she played Gina on Martin, a very funny sitcom in the 90s that really needs to come back on Hulu.
Nardo218 x well she's the lighter skinned one but not the slimest. The slimmest one is Tisha Arnold who also has the longest hair.
Pam and Gina
Cole Cole Martin

love the costumes - the bubble skirt and Swiss dot gloves! They all look so cute.
I actually love the dramatic lightning effect in front of the shop when the title comes on.
My ultimate theory is that these girls are cosmic entities more powerful than audrey II
I always thought that canonically they are the aliens who are responsible for bringing Audrey II to earth.
I always thought they were the survivors of the Audrey 2 attack, retelling the story to their children as a warning.
These women are singing!

I just hope they get enough recognition in the US from taking up this role 💕
With everything going on right now.... yikes. Which isn’t fair to them because I’m sure they would do a great job because they are great singers.
Are they supposed to recreate this or something? I'm so sick of remakes. Are they even soul singers?
I never get tired of this musical! I just love how they're like this insidious Greek chorus, just always there for good or ill. Brilliant! And catchy!
Love that they added the second verse for the movie. It's a fun song that just ended too quickly.
See if they were a real group their only rival would've been En vogue especially in the late 80s to the 90s
I love this movie it a classic
Remember this film from when I was 10 years old, 26 years later....It still rox, Love it ;)
Harmony is amazing
