  • All valuations were correct at the time of broadcast. At first sight, this 18th century sauce boat appears to be Chinese porcelain but actually it is a very rare piece of Worcester porcelain. Hugh Scully and the experts from Antiques Roadshow take a look at some fantastic antiques and the history and stories surrounding them. This clip was filmed in Welshpool in 1998.

I always like these “little” purchases that turn out to be worth a great deal more than was paid for the item.

When my wife and I went to antique fairs or second-hand "junk" markets, we used to always rummage through the boxes on the floor, under the display tables, with the 50p and £1 tat...

Everybody talking about the antiques whereas these videos themselves are 25 years old and thats a lot for a human life. So many people in those videos might've passed away.

It would be nice if you could put an adjusted price on the screen showing its current price.

The problem with doing that is that the market for different collectibles goes up and down and doesn't necessarily reflect inflation since the program was recorded. Fashion also plays a part in what collectors are willing to pay because it affects demand. The piece may be worth no more today than it was 20 years ago, or it might have quadrupled in value.

Is there an easy way to tell the difference between a valuable antique and a mass produced piece of junk that is literally worthless? A lot of these things I wouldn't take a second look at in a second hand shop even though I must have seen a thousand clips from the Roadshow by now.

You need to take in the totality of the piece.
That information is basically worthless I know, but come on man.
I am just as ignorant as you, but just watching a few clips is enough for me to understand what to look at…. I mean the jewelry can look like cheap gaudy tack from an ignorant perspective, but now we know - so we should know at least something !
