I play a few different games, but all of them are skirmish-level games... This Is Not A Test, Stargrave, Killteam, Space Weirdos, Planet 28, and Reign In Hell. The nice thing is, most of the games I play are sci-fi or at least sci-fi-ish so I can swap minis and terrain between them pretty easily. I can even use my demons from Reign In Hell as aliens or just "space demons" for some generic grimdark goodness.

I totally get this reason. But tell me if anyone else has the same experience as me.
Everyone at my local shop that plays one game ends up with five to ten factions for that game. I play four different games. I only collect one faction in each. I am spending less money and playing more games.

I mean, you can probably get into some model agnostic games. A lot of them are either entirely free or have some sort of demo PDF with the basic rules for gameplay.

That's a big reason I am sticking with miniatures agnostic games as much as I can, with very few exceptions. Being able to use a squad of humans with spears and shield between 4 or 5 published rule sets is such a blessing - all I need is a movement tray to fit their bases on!

I've played one page a few time (Grimdark Future). It's fun, and pretty simple. Easy to learn, etc.
The only issue I had, was it got stale pretty quick, due to the lack of special characters/rules like Warhammer offers.
If you're new to the hobby, I strongly recommend one page rules. If after a few games you're enjoying it, then great! It's an easy and affordable way to play. But, if you're left wanting more depth, then you can look into other games that will have a lot more rules. But playing one page will make learning those other games a lot easier, I would think.

I've cut myself down to just three games - Warhammer 40K, The Ninth Age and Gaslands. I can handle that. Anymore and either I'm not getting time to play them or it's costing too much money to keep up with them all.

When company releases new edition of the game it's not the end of the world. No one will steal your miniatures or books. There's no GW rulebook police invading homes, burning old editions and erasing them from history. :-)

Listening to your points I suddenly realised a major difference between the historicals and the fantasists. Fantasy/Sci-Fi gamers follow the rule writers, in historical games the rules follow us.
I suppose, and please correct me if I'm wrong, without the 'coda' fantasy and sci-fi doesn't have a consistent basis for the game. If historical rules change we have the history to fall back on.
Where, one assumes, the rivet counters have little sway amongst fantasy players but you are beholden to a subjective outside commercial and lore/rule writing force. Historical players are most definitely in the thrall of rivet counters but owe nothing to commercial and rule writing forces as the historical facts generally trump all.
    Interesting article 👍

      BOOM. Nailed it.
I agree wholeheartedly. It's far easier for me to write scenarios for historical games than for sci-fi games because I can always fall back on the history to fit the rule set. Not the other way around.

That's why I don't play games with dedicated models and only go with historicals. This way you can use them for whatever system that is bases on the period. I mean- a Roman army will always have legioneries, a Viking army will always have bondi and hirdmen- no matter the system. I mostly play skirmish games with my Saxons and Vikings, but I can put them on movement trays, and now I can play a mass battle system. My terrain works for everything. This way we can test multiple systems and decide which one feels right.

Also, the rules would confuse me a little but I'm sure I would cope.

As a relatively new 40k player, lots of the guys in my group have been pushing me towards Age of Sigmar. Whilst I can only ever play one army in AOS, that being Stormcast, for the sake of learning the game and saving my hobby dollars, I feel more comfortable branching out into more 40k armies like Grey Knights and custom Successor Chapters from my first army, the Raven Guard.

Sometimes you want a meal, sometimes you want a snack. For me it depends on where my mood shifts, have I been watching sci-fi? What type, space soldiers fighting aliens or battle fleets. The same with historical, horse and musket or sailing ships (I guess I need some old west stuff too). Thus I look for rules light and/or mini agnostic.

One game? ONE GAME?! Chance'd be a fine thing. I'm currently not playing any games, because there's no groups locally (that I can find), no clubs (that make themselves known), my usual gaming buddy (20 miles away) has given up and decided standing around in a charity shop all day twiddling his thumbs is more entertaining, and the pandemic!
Small town Mid-North Essex, UK is a wasteland when it comes to trying to get a game. Despite the affluence of the town I live in. There must be some GW patrons though because we have a GW reseller with a GW stand in his shop!
I've got several games, nearly none of them current GW titles though. Warhammer Quest '95, Battlefleet Gothic, Necromunda 2003, Warlord's Judge Dredd, Blood Bowl, Aeronautica Imperialis (the Wings of Vengeance set), Space Hulk 4th edition, 1st edition WFRP.
I've given up though and just become a miniature collector, not much of a choice really, currently collecting, on a very limited budget, "monsters" for Warhammer Quest '95 and a Warhammer Fantasy Battles Empire Army (yeah I know, they got squatted and what was left became Free Peoples).

Terrain concerns is a YUGE thing to consider. When you're playing like 10mm, 15mm and 28mm scale...lots of terrain building. Also, things like model basing becomes a concern and not all games are compatible. Yeah, getting the rules first is pretty important.

I have mentioned on various forums that I play plenty of different games because. I rarely do competitions, not for 2.5 years funnily enough, and a change is as good as a holiday. So I do naval type games, historical, looking at you FoW, a couple of niche games like blood bowl. But the one that echoes one of your sentiment's was the 40K Apocalypse game. I just could not stand the overpriced cost of big units that struggled to do the damage their size would suggest they should be doing in the revamped Ed 8 & 9 v the damage that could be done by a bolter. So Warhounds v Knights, Lord of Skulls & Defilers v Bane Blade & Shadow Sword, and so on are just a scream in Apocalypse

So perhaps a question for your musings. I have limited myself to one army to be painted, experimented with and try out the contrast paints. I have plenty of other things to paint and I have not been pushing myself very much. But when I am painting it is a great release and so enjoyable. I started 18 months ago, have had a health issue interrupt, but have completed 31 models from Hell Brute to Pox Walkers and am just finishing up some Blight Drones. So do you think it is a good idea to restrict yourself to one project at a time? Of course the next problem is what next? Finish my Desert Rats, do Blood Bowl team, Sisters or Mechanicus. Though I have Nelsonian ships to build and paint. Nelsonian because he hand Napoleon his arse every time Boney's men took him on.

Here's my hot take on why playing multiple games is good. I spoke with a store employee post-3rd Edition D&D, and he was telling me about how the d20 boom basically ruined roleplaying games sales for years. Everyone stuck with d20 for everything and weren't buying other products, leading to overstocking issues on both sides and stagnant sales all around.
My concern with that trend was more rules based. If you stick with only one game, you only ever experience one thing. You only ever know one way to play, one setting, and one play style. Different games all bring something to the table. On the wargames side of things, you might learn to appreciate other styles of play or even learn new tactics that you would have never recognized under just one ruleset.
Obviously you don't want to go hog wild since miniatures are expensive, but I think there's a lot to learn and appreciate by playing other games.

I would love to play many different games but at the moment I struggle to event dedicate some little time to just a single one game 😞 Not even considering the hobbist side of hobby which is even more time demanding.
Anyway ... to everyone its own way of enjoing the hobby. Luckily enough we live a hobby which has gotten a lot more free in those latest years... Nowadays you can approach a lot of different and unique ways of enjoing the hobby: from the single game super focused competitive-like try harder to the very casual-like multiple-system... Or maybe a narrative only background lover that focus in particular scenarios and campaings ... And the nice thing is that everything works as long you are enjoing yourself

My Necromunda gang works for stargrave as well probably for plenty of things. Building some fantasy stuff at the mo. Works for Mordheim, warcry and frostgrave. Sure I could find many more systems. Don't obsess with what the mini is or what system it was made for. Someone with a ray gun or shotgun a big melee weapon etc will transfer over easily enough even if not armed exactly as described. Undo the brainwashing of GW telling you only specific official mini's can be used.

I don’t play the game I get - I am content to just get and paint the 40K stuff and just work on it while listening to lore and watching painting videos - while it seems like a waste to some, I just have gotten to the point in my life where I just feel too hurt by people in my life and just don’t get myself out there that much. It’s also why I have blocked a lot of hobby channels lately because they are just so negative towards the manufacturers of the games and it feels too much like what I faced in my life. But it is also the same in the comic book hobby so yeah it’s a thing.

Honestly I don't play any games at all. Not cause I don't enjoy them but I don't know anyone in my area that plays games. I just moved half way across the country and so I of course don't know anyone. I buy miniatures to paint cause I enjoy painting but my local game store doesn't do anything to connect players in the area to play games together. I visit the store at least once a week to buy miniatures and/or paints and I have only seen one game of anything played in the store since I moved almost 5 months ago. I would like to learn to play wargames but there isn't really a place for me to connect with people so I can learn/play
