    Nitro Gear & Axle Kit for 3rd Gen Tacoma TRD Sport, SR5, & Limited:
    www.nitro-gear...
    In this video, we talk about the very important issue of proper gearing for the Toyota Tacoma. From the factory of Toyota, the Tacomas come with gears that are meant for higher mpg, doing so drastically affected the driveability and power of the Tacoma. The 3.90 gears used in the 3rd gen Tacoma basically ruined the driveability of the truck on the highway or going on hills.
    We take the 2018 Tacoma to a local shop in Colorado to get the proper gears put in it to accommodate the bigger tires that we have put on it. We have 285/75/17 on the truck, which is equivalent to a 34-inch tire. This drastically affected the truck's ability to accelerate and keep the speed without downshifting constantly. Even with stock tires and no lift, the stock gears have issues with knowing which gear to be in. By regearing to 5.29, we have corrected the gears to accommodate for the bigger tires and added weight.
    If you would like to keep your vehicle stock FOREVER, we would recommend 4.88. But if you plan on upgrading tire sizes or load the truck then we would highly recommend 5.29.

    As a Jeep owner I understand the pain of a continuous need for mods. Proper gearing will make a huge difference. Whenever you feel bad about the $$$ you throw at your Taco, remember us Jeep guys know Jeep stands for "Just Empty Every Pocket". lol

    Back in the late 70's, and in the 80's. The first thing we always did with our Toyota's, was change the gear ratios. Running the 20R, and 22R engines. You could even run 31 inch tires with those engines. They didn't have any power. We swapped out for some really low gears. Of course you couldn't run at highway speeds, but at least it was drivable after the swap

    nice mod for 2x4 tacoma... When changing axle gears ratios in a 4X4, the front and rear axle ratios must be the same ratio when operating in four-wheel drive. If the front and rear axles are different ratios, severe damage to the transfer case and other truck components will occur

    Oh, the pain of post-mod realizatoin that you have to keep spending the dough to make your truck drive well. It's exactly why I would love a lift with bigger tires and re-gear but I don't plan to keep my Tacoma for a really long time. I am military and live on the base I work at so when I move, if I have to commute far, the Tacoma will be traded for probably a Camry Hybrid or similar. Idk though, i may do an oldschool civic as a commuter and keep the Taco.

    Andrew is spot on with his advice. Also consider that when your tire size -axle ratio is a mismatch the speedo AND the odometer are off. Part of the mileage problem is that the truck thinks it is going a short distance (due to the wrong driveshaft revolutions) and it is using a lot of fuel. Thus it thinks it is getting sucky mileage. If you correct for the error it is not that bad. However is severely reduced as the engine is in the wrong RPM band. One always gets better with a good match and efficient operation. Great advice.

      @Peter Paulsen true and initially I thought regearing would improve my MPGs but it’s actually gonna make it worse since my 4Runner is my daily driver and I don’t have any extra weight besides 33s plus I drive on flat highways. Regearing is more suited for off-road performance rather than on road driving

    Also for folks who want to know how the math work and which gears to get take a look below:
    Desire tire size ( I have 35's) 35x stock gear ratio ( manual Taco 4.30) thus 35x4.30/stock tire size (29**) = optimal gear ratio for normal driving
    thus (again) 35x4.30/29= 5.19gear ratio needed.
    Not a number set in stone however more of a guide. Cheers

    I have a manual 17' Tacoma TRD Off Road and Regearing (installed the 5.29 ratio) is probably the most important upgrade after lifting and putting bigger tires on Tacomas. Huge improvement in terms of performance (no more downshifting to 4th even 3rd gear on slopy hills) and made my tacoma fun to drive again. Be advise though, don't expect the MPG to improve dramatically as mine only improved between 1-3mpg prior to the regear.

      Taco Twonz and the front and back gears must be the same ratio, e.g. 4.88’s front and back.

    Is it required to re-gear both differentials?

      Yes if you have a 4X4. Different gear ratios will damage your transfer case quickly.

    So even if I just go with 33" tires I should still go with the 5.29...that's the biggest tire I think I'll ever go. Or will 4.88 be fine also???

    • @Runnin4Tacos
      @Runnin4Tacos  5 років тому +1

    • @Runnin4Tacos

      Craig Wexler it comes with a pretty detailed break in procedure. Following it isn't hard

    • @Reverend1776
      @Reverend1776 5 років тому

      @@Runnin4Tacos I've read Nitros info, but do you just have to wait until you actually have around 500 miles on the front diff because for some, that is a long time.

    • @Runnin4Tacos
      @Runnin4Tacos  5 років тому +1

      Craig Wexler yeah the front will definitely take some time. Don't do highway miles in 4x4. What I did on my cement gray Tacoma is taking it on light trails or dirt roads and just do some driving in 4wd. It will take a lot longer to break in the front but must do. I did about 5 light trails and then flushed the front

      @@alexpeters9460 manual is fun in sports cars like my foRS, but is a fucking hassle in trucks. Plus you lose crawl control, which I have used hundreds of times to validate it's no gimmick. In most cases it works better than the right foot of so called "seasoned" offroaders. I've seen many humble pies consumed.
