- DANA sings Rachmaninoff! The Russian composer premiered the chorus of this lovely song in 1908. When Eric Carmen heard Symphony No.2 (Adagio) it inspired him to write Never Gonna Fall in Love Again. His 1976 single made #11 in the US, but only DANA’s version became a hit in the UK, entering the chart on 6 March where it remained for just four weeks, peaking prematurely at #31 on the 13th. Issued on GTO Records, it was her third UK hit in two years with them, after having just two hits in seven years with Rex Records (Decca).
This follow-up to It’s Gonna be a Cold Cold Christmas was promoted on numerous TV programmes, including the Cilla show seen here. Broadcast on Saturday 21 February 1976, it’s probably her best ever performance of the song, and instead of the normal fade out there's a nice new ending. She then sang Yesterday Once More with Cilla Black (FoD#51). Her next appearance in the hit parade came later that year when Fairytale achieved a 16-week chart run that began in October and ended in January 1977.

Trivia 1: Roy Hudd (seen at the start with Cilla) had recently finished starring in a panto in Oxford called Cinderella, who was played by DANA.
Trivia 2: After that panto had closed in January, her break was cut short by news that her future husband's hotel in Newry had been bombed (again!) by the Provisional IRA.
Trivia 3: It's unique for a recording artist to have two consecutive hits with songs containing the word "gonna" in the title.
Trivia 4: Eric Carmen had to pay Rachmaninoff's estate 12% of the royalties for two songs: this one and All By Myself.

@@judgedredd3568 You're absolutely right! The chorus was lifted directly from him but some parts of the song were written by Eric Carmen. Carmen was a great classical music aficionado and enjoyed incorporating classical elements to his impeccable songwriting. All By Myself was another, but THAT chorus he actually nicked from himself, taking the melody from his own Raspberries classic Lets Pretend, one of their finest songs.
True also did same with all by myself...I have no problem with using classics to create a song ..but just felt credit was deserved

I love music and I'm always looking for singers/mucisians I didn't know. Just discovered this jewel today and I'm gonna look for more of her. I'm in the US and I don't know if Dana ever made it here or not, but I'd love to have seen her in a concert.
I discovered her general market era roughly a year ago. Hitherto I had only known largely about her CCM/Catholic music like The Rosary and Lady of Knock. But when I went down the rabbit-hole that this channel provided, along with other Dana posts on UA-cam, I was most rewarded. Like you, I'm an American, and I feel what makes my love of Dana's pop works more impressive is the fact that I'm normally into metal. But also like you, I enjoy other acts that most Americans know fuck all about.
P.S. She has been known to do stateside gigs. But they are mostly religious ones.

The story I heard about the royalties was that Eric Carmen thought the music was in the public domain. When he found out it wasn't, he asked the Rachmaninoff family what they thought was a fair settlement. He doubled the amount that they suggested and gave Sergei writer's credit to guarantee that the royalties would continue.
Eric Carmen's father is Carmen Dragon, symphony conductor. It would be unthinkable to Eric to steal someone's music.
