- DANA competing with house sparrows on a chilly summers day in Lowestoft. She was a guest on Seaside Special alongside Les Dawson, Bernie Clifton, Brother Lees, Stuart Gillies, New Edition and host David Hamilton. This episode was broadcast by the BBC on 2 July 1977. If the record-buying public had been as enthusiastic as Les Dawson, then her new single might have been a hit, although it wasn't necessarily the song that turned him on! That summer Donna Summer was number one with I Feel Love. Donna and DANA were both signed to GTO Records. The B-side to I Feel Love was Can't We Just Sit Down (And Talk It Over), written by Tony Macaulay. It was originally the A-side (US#20) until they swapped over due to enormous interest in the unusual electronic disco sound found on the flip side.
Macaulay also wrote Put Some Words Together, so DANA got the best deal quality wise, just not in sales. He invited her to Los Angeles to record it. She was there for three weeks, staying at the 5-star Beverly Hills Hotel. The recording sessions took place in the legendary A&M Studios in Hollywood. Elvis Presley's lead guitarist played on the track. During her stay she met David Soul and Paul Michael Glaser, the stars of Starsky and Hutch. They took her to see an unknown band called Blondie.
Making that single five months after her throat operation in September 1976 was not a good idea, it turned out. Macaulay had to join the best bits from various takes to get what he wanted. But that's what producers do anyway. She said it took five years to fully recover from the surgery.
You're living in a dream world
Where all the words I long for get written down in love songs
And if you notice me at all you call me by a different name
You're not to blame but now I need something more
It's high time you put some words together just for me
Don't need to be all new words if I know you mean them
Sure I matter for a minute then I might as well be gone
Whichever world you're living in oh why can't I belong
It's high time you put some words together just for me
If I hang on till you're ready I could wait forever
They don't need be to music or even have to rhyme
Just a line of simple words to say you love me
We're on the road to nowhere
With all our soons and somedays forgotten by the morning
And every time we talk I see you start to drift away
This shadow play is running fast out of light
It's high time you put some words together just for me
Don't need to be all new words if I know you mean them
Sure I matter for a minute then I might as well be gone
Whichever world you're living in oh why can't I belong
It's high time you put some words together just for me
If I hang on till you're ready I could wait forever
They don't need be to music, they don't even have to rhyme
Just a line of simple words to say you love me
Ooh, just a line of simple words to say you love me
Ooh, ooh, ooh, just a line of simple words to say you care
