My Freshman year (University) of Marching Band Camp was actually awesome. I play Tenor Saxophone and everyone in the saxophone section was so chill and nice. Really funny people and accepted me right away. Can't wait for this coming season. Now that I'll be a Sophomore, I wanna help the upcoming Freshman and make them feel comfortable just like the others did for me last year.
I just got out of band camp for my college. I could not count the amount of times my band Director told us not to pass out in a day. We live in the south it’s 99° outside on a good day. I get it.
I'm currently a freshman and auditioned for the solo in our piece. Obviously didn't get it since my competition was a senior, but the directors still had a hard time deciding between us two.
I remember my freshman year they allowed a select few 8th graders to join the marching band because ours is small. However, the freshman trumpets that year pulled through and 100% of us joined the marching band! (Disclaimer: there was only two of us 😅)
I’m a freshman, and a mellophone player for marching band. Since mellos rarely get solos (and I’m super bitter about that) and also because I suck, I never get solos. Mainly because I suck. But my band director told me after the second day of using our horns (learning posture and stuff) that he wished everyone held their horn like I hold mine. He complimented me yesterday, in fact. He said that I hold my horn better than some of the juniors and seniors. >:3
As a baritone in a high school marching band where we are one of the best in the nation (4 grand nat wins) we are taught to keep our instrument up until we are told to. This leads us to hold it up for over an hour sometimes with good posture and all. Us baritones are fine, you have to have a good mindset and mental strength to power through. It hurts really bad at the 10 minute mark and doesn’t change too much after for me. At the 40 minute mark it’s not fun, But don’t break, it gets easier the more you hold it. I might be able to hold a trumpet for a few hours because of that. If anything, you need to feel bad For the Euphonium and bari sax because those are super duper heavy.
I have no music experience. Band camp is in 2 weeks. They put me on trumpet. Minimum practice. (Not many trumpet players though) help. With everything. 😅
Don’t really know how to help, and I gotta say, that band must be insanely desperate, but if it’s anything like my band, just put in a ton of effort, and you should do okay(I just realized that this was posted a 3 weeks ago)
My going into freshmen year, at like "pre" band camp for freshies, and legit the brass captin (leader of brass) told everyone that i said i was going to be top chair top band, i ended up getting last chair bottom band, and in a course of a year i was 2nd in top lmao
Omg I got multiple solos in my first week of high school just because I’m not good at alto saxophone but I’ve been playing for 8 months and the other has been playing for 3 months so I ended up with the solos
As a trumpet player, my introduction to marching band from my section leader was, “see them? Those are flutes. Don’t talk to them, they’re weird and flutes suck.” Literally. I still don’t know what the beef is as a senior, but I got two younger sisters that played flute, so I can’t say he was wrong
The funny part for number two is when the freshman talks big so no one respects him… then they learn he has the skill to back it up when he actually gets the solo… I got it the next two years tho (we in the same grade) I didn’t try out freshman year and he didn’t try out junior year
2nd one happened to me kinda a jerky senior told me to play the solo if i was so confident i was gonna have a chance at getting it and i was like ok cause i was confident and guess what sucker i got the trombone solo over him and I DONT EVEN PLAY TROMBONE
It’s funny to see these things happen from the side as a colorguard member. While knowing that we couldn’t do that for a minute, but also that they can’t do what we do. So it’s just solidarity tbh.
No offense(cause what I did wasn’t very hard choreo) but I got Xbox my freshman year, and they had like half of us do guard stuff at the hits, so in the hits of parts 3&4, half the Xbox was doing stuff. A lot of us looked bad, but the people who actually put in effort looked better than one or two color guard members(that includes me yay) and also we got about 8 hours of practice on it over the season(discluding actual performances) overall easy but fun, and I can say with confidence that guard is easy if you are decent at that kind of stuff(but really hard if not), but band itself is really hard compared to guard. Then again, I’m in a really freaking competitive band, and while our guard was best in the nation (in 2015-2020) they are a lot weaker than they used to be. Lot better than 2021 and 2022 were tho.
@@pularis1629 my band/guard is pretty competitive (ranking 3rd colorguard overall and 5th band overall in our first competition) however i am able to acknowledge that some people just have natural skill in colorguard while others have to put in an extreme amount of work compared to everyone else to look the same! A lot of it is really just up to how good you are naturally on top of practice
I ended up being low brass section leader last year after the previous one got demoted for some reason and it was awful bc I was a sophomore but I’m doing it again this year and I hope it goes better!
At least for me band isn’t like this. We have a really good culture, and are in either the most or the second most competitive school district in the nation(if you use logic, that is. Because one decent band does no equal best school district for band, it requires most if not all being great)
Ok, but the first one's fr weak. I participated in a Tuba holding competition a few years ago and holy shit, that was maybe the hardest 1,5min in my life! And we had to have our hands stretched. So that wasn't easy and I did pretty bad, but a horn has basically no weight. That should be easy, I mean how long can he play?
