It’s kinda funny how gypceros is made to annoy hunters. Poison attacks, stealing items, the flash, and playing dead. I think it works a bit too well given the general dislike of this birb but points for being distinct
From a developer’s/director’s perspective, Gypceros serves to teach the player about how breaking body parts can cripple a monster via its beak, to bring items via its use of poison, and to be ready to craft new items within the hunt itself thanks to its ability to steal items, and the extreme likelihood of your Antidotes running dry from getting poisoned, all of which are key skills later into the game. It’s a LOT of annoying things to cram into one monster, but, much like how Khezu teaches you the importance of backing off via AOE spam, you’re almost certainly going to take those lessons on board after learning them the hard way, getting flashed and poisoned a bajillion times. As for the playing dead thing, I got nothing. No other monster has a similar mechanic within MH1 and all games hence don’t have anything like it either, so it’s just kinda there as an auxiliary mechanic.
the first time seeing Gypceros run its stupid chicken run but VERTICALLY up the cliff in the Ancestral Steppe, my partner and i fell into a laughing fit so hard it ended up carting both of us. Good times :')
When I remember the gruesome fate that usuakky befalls this guy at the hands of Khezu and Nerscylla, I can't help but feel sorry for Gypceros and guilty when I hunt it.
Props to MHW for training me well; "A singed branch, a raised hair, a tuft of fur" and I immediately knew you were talking about Kirin. I've found their fur tracks many a time before.
plus being an Elder Dragon means its a beast thats to be feared by many, especially since nothing would dare to challenge it....except for one very, very angry monkey
I have a fun theory as to why Puprle Gypceros are so rare. My theory is that it is because Nerscylla prefer to hunt them over regular Gypceros. To those unfamiliar with Nerscylla, it is a Temnoceran (AKA giant f-off spider) that hunts Gypceros and wears its skin as a defense mechanism. My theory is that they prefer to go after Purple Gypceros due to the added poisons in their hide, adding to their defenses even more than normal Gypceros hide would. Do note that is just a fan theory ompletely made up by me though.
Looking more than forward to season 2. I feel there's plenty to be covered, especially with the 20th anniversary closing in and a likely announcement to go with it soon.
I always feel so giddy when I see you post one of your ecology videos. They're so nicely narrated and really nail the relaxing, yet entertaining, vibe of nature documentaries.
Were I a hunter, I would take gypceros quests very seriously, perhaps specializing in them for the sake of others not having to mishandle one. "are you SURE you killed the Gypceros?" "Here's its brain for study" (Sets down gypceros brain in empty potion jar)
In my case, after hearing of their tendency to play dead, I'd probably attempt to break its neck once it goes down, just so that I can make sure it stays down. It might still flash me, but how will it follow up without neural connections, hm?
Oh! I assumed we would have talked about Nerscylla if we mentioned gypsy boy. As smart as it is perhaps the nerscylla woukd have to be even more cunning to hunt it successfully
I cannot wait for Kirin! These videos are so detailed, I don't really even know whats canon to actual monster hunter ecology anymore. And I'm all for it! I really want to see how you make sense of Kirin in the next episode.
As a very heavy Bow user, my addiction to Dash Juice definitely contributes to the harvesting of the Dash Extract from any and all monsters that we can get it from.
I have really liked this series! I didn't really like Gypceros before I watched this video. I thought he looked really weird and unnatural... But I've really wormed up to him now! Thanks for making monster hunter that bit more enjoyable for me!
Good ole Gypceros, everyone’s least favourite poison spitting, flint-flashing, item stealing, playing dead-ing, rubber chicken. Go too far? Slapped with a poison glob, instacharged or having an item stolen via a flurry of blunt pecks. Get too close? See above, plus the good ole flap-back, which just pushes you into the “too far” range. Get behind it? Go go gadget tail! Leave it alone for more than two seconds? Hope you enjoyed your retinas while you had them. Killed it at last? Nope, it’s still alive somehow. Still, it’s funny how this piece of rubber flavoured poultry that everyone hates had its reputation boosted into the stratosphere in 4th gen because, ironically enough, we encountered the one thing that hated Gypceros almost as much as us in Nerscylla, and suddenly Gypceros was a good boi that did no wrong.
I can't wait to see the next episode. The Kirin is one of my franchise favorites, besides the obvious reason for male hunters regarding the female low rank Armor. I always wondered HOW this was deemed an elder dragon exactly. Was it only because of the ability to control lightning wrecking havoc on the ecology? Why does it have hooves and no wings like many wyverns? Are Kirin related to any common monsters? What makes them successful in the Monster Hunter World? Also, why hasn't there been attempts at domestication? This is a perfect monster to try it with, lightning control put aside.
Something that i never considered is that despite how ugly the gypceros is, i am sure that out there must exist at least someone that is a hardcore gypceros fan
Same, I enjoy the ecology and its behavior is much more like like an intelligent beast fighting to stay alive. The monster has an idea of how dangerous you are and throws everything at you and you have to do the same. @@friskycalibri2293

Oddly the item theft is the least oppressive mechanic of him. The poison and just erratic movement is the most deadly aspects. Shaking out of stun isn’t that hard.

@@thearcticferret look I don't wanna be mean or anything but, i know that it's in generational order, i just saw gypceros and went insane as a joke, also i saw the kirin foreshadowing at the end like the previous episodes, so all of that "PLEASE NERCYLLA NEXT!!" I really like him design wise. He looks great, he's got cool gimmicks. As far as the fight itself goes, it's just awful. Just running around being an annoying chicken.
They add khezu to mhr but not gypcerios? Sure it was annoying to deal with but what made gypcerios interesting is it's the main prey of khezu so it would've been cool to see a turf war between these two in the, also I love how it plays opossum
