Valedictorian Will Not Speak at USC Graduation

- The valedictorian of the University of Southern California class of 2024 won’t be giving a speech at graduation. The school’s provost wrote that rescinding the invitation to speak was, “necessary to maintain the safety of our campus and students.” Asna Tabassum will graduate top of her class with a major in biomedical engineering and an interdisciplinary minor in resistance to genocide. Tabassum is clear in her support for Palestinian people, and asserts that she is not antisemitic.
A country more worried about protecting a foreign country than their own citizens😂
Not true. Our country has welcomed millions of people here who want
only to conquer or/& destroy the citizens already here. Read their book!
Hi Marge🙋🏽♂ Still getting your talking points from the Kremlin I see. How many rubles you got in your bank account?
Truth
This is the truth it's literally happening in front of our eyes anyone who disagrees is probably as smart and strong as joe Biden
And its looking like American kids will soon be dying for that Foreign country.
She should film herself delivering the speech then post it online for all to see.
She can also go back to her hi culture and speak there
Great idea bro 💯💯💯
Her culture is here. What an ignorant, bigoted statement!
@andyhughes1776 I agree. They should film her for her safety.
This is a great idea! Hopefully she sees this because her speech is important and she should still give it some way. I also think that if it’s filmed it will really do even more people.

Invite all students to hear her speak at a park or other venue near campus. They can't control that.
nobody would come, who cares what she has to say. USC doesn’t care LOL
She might be pelted with eggs though.
She is free to do that. USC simply didnt want her to spew her antisemitic, bigoted speech and ruin a graduation event.

To deny the exchange of ideas is criminal and not to be tolerated in a free society ✌️🇺🇸
We don't have a free society or a Republic. Please pay attention
When the speech is inflammatory, then the speaker should not be allowed to make that speech. USC did the right thing.
We no longer have free speech in this country. Censorship is the new norm.
Did your son say a nation needs to be destroyed?
This particular voice is too skewed for an even future.
Last time somebody diffused a speech with rhetoric like hers, a whole war started.
The irony of all this stifling of her rights is that she now has a platform way larger than USC to say her speech in some way, shape or form.

No one is taking away her First Amendment right. She can speak her mind anywhere. However, the graduation ceremony is not the place for political statements this girl is prepared to make. Something tells me she is not going to send a positive message to fellow graduates and the school.
But kneeling during the national anthem is also bad 🤔

@@TheLaron2006 yes it is because it's showing disrespect to the U.S.

Stop saying free speech. She can still say it on the street or any public place she chooses.
"The Federal Civil Rights Act of 1964 states that no business (public or private) serving the public can discriminate based on a customer's national origin, sex, religion, color or race."
That's not what conservatives have been saying...

@@michaelmiguel6937 Valedictorian speech is part of the deal. She met her end of the deal by becoming Valedictorian. They refused her the service of hosting her speech. Not every person who is paying tuition is Valedictorian.
I get it if they don't want to get political at the valedictorian speech. They can say, "hey, please don't make any political statements at graduation," but not letting her speak at all is too far, unless she is refusing to not talk about politics during the speech.
Come on, do you really think she would refrain from saying something pro Palestinian during her speech ? I would not trust her for one second even if she said she would not do so. Can you just picture the uproar it would create if she had to be escorted from the podium if she did say something?
Not difficult to see the hate in her eyes.
Graduation is not about HER politics. Graduation is about the entire graduating class.
Her speech is about whatever she likes. So nice to hear people advocate for cancel culture but live in denial of their stance.
The valedictorian speech is personal to the valedictorian. The valedictorian has the right to speak about anything they deem as important.
Nothing in the official USC statement said that they were censoring her due to the contents of her speech.
Resistance to genocide is a minor. Oh.
Not according to yeh UN
Well, anything to stop a protest from erupting and hurting people.
Good for USC, they 100% saw her speech and went "naaahh" lol. It was likely to be highly inflammatory and political just based on what she said herself in that interview. Regardless of what side they're on, they don't want to deal with that controversy, and we need more places like this, that keep it professional and don't get involved with giving opinions on foreign conflicts.
Is there hope for higher education? I doubt it! But this is a start.
The start of "Western rUSsiA" is more like it. No freedom of speech = not a free country
Sounds like censorship to me... but that's just me.
Sounds like taking a stand. Nobody’s barred from talking on their own platforms
Not just you, lol
Nope. She's free to do it on her own time in her own space. Other people paid tuition and may not want to hear her.
It is censorship. Most wealthy donors had made it clear that they wouldn't support universities that allows students to only criticize the Israel government and the situation in Gaza.
How did you feel about taking Trump off Social Media ?
With the times we live in and with her controversial rhetoric and viewpoint, (that she, herself, posted online, even if it was "just a link according to her"), I can see why USC would be concerned about safety with 65,000 people in attendance. That would be equivalent to providing security for a college stadium football game.

Good. Nobody wants to hear middle eastern politics at a college speech. I wanna know what she plans on doing with her new degree and that is ALL.
The backlash proves otherwise
i don't think that's true. Powerful and wealthy donors have been insisting on their pro-israel stance. That's 'middle eastern politics' too. We give billions of our US tax dollars to Israel for 'middle eastern politics', so it concerns all of us.

why doesnt she give a speech in palestine?
Did it irk you that bad? You bothered she wants to speak against murdering thousands of children?

...because there's no such place, and hasn't been, for 2,000 years
she says she's committed to human rights of all people but she calls for the death of all Israelites. Yes she's a hero and she's the victim.
This may be the biggest NON-STORY of the year. The status and title of valedictorian is only meaningful within the university. After graduation no one cares except for the parents, the students and a handful of cousins. If an organization is even a little concerned that their students' actions could threaten a widely attended high-profile event then they have every right to make adjustments to their program and move forward without incident. This student deserves no special consideration. She earned the title and status of valedictorian but is granted no status or privilege beyond that.
This is crazy!!! If they’re so worried about her safety, then at least let her do a speech and film it, so it can be aired at the actual ceremony!
She has more rights than most americans. She isn't the victim.
More rights than most Americans? Like what exactly? What right does she have that most Americans don't have?
