    One thing that impresses me about the Ford Model A and other cars of that era is the utter simplicity of the Model A Ford and just how very basic a car it is with only the basic essentials to do a road trip from one place to another. This is long before all the modern safety equipment, and all the modern comfort equipment and all the modern emission control equipment and all the electronic engine control equipment. It is no wonder that a number of people like and enjoy these old Ford Model A cars.

    I had a 31 Tudor. Mine had a 283 Chevy and manual trans. You're right about night driving with headlights bouncing off all the flat glass. Also when stopped at a traffic light you must lean far forward to peer up at it.

    I had a 1999 Jeep Wrangler with driver, and passenger seats that folded the same as the Tudor coup. Jeep calls it a "tuck & tumble" seat, and they are fantastic for getting people in and out of the back seat. I didn't know that Ford was using them in the 30s!
    That will be a beautiful car for someone.

    Ahhhh. . the Tudor! WAY back in the early 1980's my Mother and I attended a rummage sale in a neighboring city, and for sale there was a black 1930 Tudor! I was just about driving age then, and BOY did I want that thing! Of course being a broke teenager, with nowhere near 400 bucks not to mention the two or three THOUSAND dollars they wanted for that particular example, it was not able to come home with us! But I have loved that body style ever since! It just SCREAMS vintage car! Now my grail A would be either the 1930 DeLuxe Phaeton. Or the FANTASTIC 1931 400A! A picture of one of those graces my computer screen on startup!

    Just Got my 1929 Tudor a few months ago. After driving it about 20 miles on a wild goose chase to follow the bureaucratic maze of getting it inspected for the VIN, it stopped running - maybe some bad fuel picked up along the road. However, your videos have provided some bread crumbs to follow while troubleshooting and are always (with Tina's help and her own videos) entertaining and informative .
    My main point here is the legroom issue, which I solved by making my own extension from the floor pegs rearward, with a tab for bolting down through the floorboard for the rear anchor. The extension is square steel tubing about 12" long with pre -pierced holes on all sides at 1" spacing, available from Home Depot in 3' lengths. By enlarging some holes to fit the pegs and my bolt fasteners, I was able to get an additional 4" of legroom. The driver's seat does not fold forward quite the same for rear passenger access, but enough for reach access. Didn't think of your trick of reversing the front seat pegs, but that'd not have given me enough, anyway.
    By the way, the Model A Ford driving controls (minus spark advance and hand throttle), the fuel tank placement, and the engine compartment setup are virtually identical to the 1951 Model 170 Mercedes Benz I once owned and drove in Germany in the early 60s. Purchase price then was $75.00. Have always regretted leaving it behind.

    Speaking of cab room, I have driven an early 70s chevy pickup, as well as 66, and 77 Ford F100s. In the Chevy the steering wheel was touching my stomach, and my legs felt cramped, in both of the Fords there was plenty of room. Nearly a foot of space between the steering wheel, and my stomach. The fords both were a much better ride. I have driven the 77 Ford several times between Sacramento, and Northern Washington State, a few times with a trailer. I experienced very little fatigue driving that truck. I still have that truck, and it still runs, and drives just fine.

    I love my 29 Tudor. I used to want a 30s Tudor, but having a 20s one grew on me, and now i like it more, it feels more specifical since everyone wants to drive the 30s
    I also recently did the foam trim, helped a lot against cold air coming in too. I even found brown foam that matches my brown fenders and roof.
    Still I'd love to get it a little bit quieter inside, it's hard to have a conversation driving top speed on the road.
    I do kind of envy that there is no couch in the front, it makes it feel a bit less weird, and i like weird.
    Also i tried to turn the seat posts, since I'm a tall dutch guy, but some previous owner put like 3 nuts on each, and they have corroded very stuck over time... They are also very hard to reach with a good tool in between the chassis

      Self adhesive sound deadening material is available to resolve excess noise issues. It can be applied directly to to metal or wood panels behind upholstery and under carpets; even the firewall. The ride will be quieter but you will lose part of the charm of riding in a classic automobile; and possibly judging points.

    • @DrTheRich
      @DrTheRich Рік тому

      @@galentaylor9953 oh the noise isn't from the outside, it's because the engine is worn and unbalanced. And the gearbox teeth are worn too.
      It's not supposed to sound like that in a good car, so getting that more quiet isn't taking away from the charm of the car, and will allow you to have conversations with a passenger when driving on the bigger roads.
      Btw, the luxury cars of the day where also pretty well sound isolated, compared to the cheap Fords. So making it more quiet still fits the time period.

On the exterior, this car came with one reverse light. Perfect styling but not so good at lighting the rear of the car when backing up. So, me, I added more lights. Now, you can read a newspaper with all light available. The headlights are now HID's. It is a Scion xB made by Toyota. Small, yet able to carry a lot of stuff with the rear seats folded down. Naturally, they're not produced any more. ARG!

    If so, there's now officially more '31 pieces on my (supposedly) '30 coupe than there are '30 parts xD
    Also, do you know if there was an early and a late version of the spare tire carrier?
    I notice my spare is leaning backwards slightly, whilst some pictures show the tyre actually leaning forward a little, towards the trunk.

    Hi Paul - I love your videos - and you're not lying about the "tudor". I am 6'3" and was reasonably comfortable in my '31 Tudor without modifying the seat attachment in any way - but I would love to try those seat frame extensions you mention. Recently I went to see a 100% original '29 sedan (I'm in the minority I guess of guys who like the '28 and '29s better for appearance), but I had to pass on the sedan because I just couldn't fit. My left knee was splayed out at a ridiculous angle just to operate the clutch (double clutching would have been nearly impossible) and my knee was killing me after a short test drive. I have to ask - without major and unauthentic work to a Fordor - is there ANY way to increase leg room in one - or especially in an open touring model? Other than a super rare an expensive A400, is there ANY Model A with as much legroom as a Tudor? Thanks in advance, Tom

      Oh, neat! Derek mentioned possibly having me fly out and do a rebuild on that car. But I haven't heard peep about it. Maybe he's still planning on that. So, what is the story with the paint? Derek's pretty swamped now, so who knows if the Model As will move forward or not? I was really looking forward to getting that Tudor fixed up.

      Nice! I had the paint matched to what was already on the car (factory paint) when I had it resprayed. Didn't use a code or chips, just a guy who had been painting cars for decades and knew how to match lacquer. The MAFCA paint guide has the accepted colors in it, but they are a little bit off from mine.

      @@ModelA Sorry to bother you again but I have one more question. What's the difference between your paint job and the MAFCA paint guide, Darker, Lighter or is the color way off? @@ModelA Guess I got lucky lol. I took the car for a test drive today, seemed to drive fine but to be fair I'm not exactly sure what a model A is supposed to feel like when driving. It seemed to have adequate power (got it up to 50 without much fuss) and it wasn't making any weird engine or transmission noises (other than clashing the gears some because I am NOT used to this type of unsynchronized transmission yet) and it seemed to stop well, almost as good as a modern car so I assume that's adjusted right. I was a little concerned about the steering, the steering itself seemed tight and I wasn't having to fight it or make any huge adjustments while driving, but it did seem like the car was a bit wobbly on the road, for lack of a better term. I never really had to correct the steering because it always seemed to come back to center after wandering a tiny bit, and that may just be how these drive, but I've never driven one before so I was interested in your thoughts! Like I said it didn't seem like I was fighting the car, just felt a bit unstable. Which could in all honesty be my inexperience lol.

    Paul, thank you for the beautiful tour of this car and the ride-a-long. I could have watched a tour for a good couple of hours. I think your price on this car is good and particularly so because of your long-term ownership. I wish it were possible for you to have raffled off this car. The prices of these cars have been skyrocketing the past years, makes it harder for young folk like me to get into the hobby. Luckily I got one on a good deal, but it did need a new engine/complete revision, so it wasn't as good of a deal in hindsight.

    • @festerhairball6588
      @festerhairball6588 Рік тому +1

      I disagree about "skyrocketing prices." Sure, coupes, trucks , roadsters & concors quality demand a premium. But I've seen plenty of driver quality, running, driving examples for low teens ($).
      I believe this is one of the most affordable collector cars out there. Plus the older generation who own & love them are passing them onto their kids ( & sell them with little sentimental value).
      Just my observation. Have a good day

    Paul, how is it going. Well I just watched a movie from 2009. Public Enemies with Christian Baehle (sp ?) and Johnny Depp. Good movie but being and old radio guy some of the radios weren’t totally correct. Movie was based in 1933-34. But the cars were. Lot of them got shot up. Many model A coupes but mostly sedans. Have a guy next town over that is selling a 1933 Chevy 2 dr sedan from the movie. Body looks great except phony bullet holes on one side. Car is rough inside and doesn’t run. Wife says no. Oh well have Mafca swap meet end of month in Milwaukee. Lol I’ll show her.
