August 22nd, 1998. An explosive 10 rounder took place 20 years ago between former IBF Super Featherweight Champion Arturo "Thunder" Gatti and “Mighty” Ivan Robinson. This bout took place 4 years before the birth of the epic Arturo Gatti vs Micky Ward series of fights.
Both Gatti and Robinson were good friends and they spent a number of weeks together during Pernell Whitaker’s training camp. However, they had not sparred with each other all during that time.
Prefight records; Gatti 29(24)-1, Robinson 25(10)-2.
Entering the fight, Gatti had commendable wins over top oppositions in Calvin Grove, Pete Taliaferro, Wilson Rodriguez, Gabriel Ruelas & Tracy Harris Patterson (2x). On the other hand, Robinson had yet to earn a notable win.
From the outset, both men set a fast and furious pace but Robinson as the 4-1 betting underdog was overall the craftier fighter; alternating between boxing and fighting tactics to consistently confuse the unyielding Gatti who managed to hurt Robinson in a few occasions but as a whole he was outfoxed by Ivan’s brilliant fight plan.
Robinson’s hand speed and his use of a sharp jab allowed him to get the best in most of the exchanges as well.
In the 4th, Gatti scored a knockdown with a right hand over the top of Robinson’s ear.
Mighty Ivan shook Arturo badly in the 6th and followed up with a vicious assault which forced Gatti to hold but he retaliated with a thunderous right hand that sent Robinson stumbling about the ring before attempting to finish him with a volley of hooks.
But amazingly, Robinson returned fire and both continued to exchange till the bell sounded to end the round. Both fighters were close to scoring a stoppage win.
In the 7th to 9th frames, Gatti was evidently less effective as both his eyes were badly swollen which impeded his vision. He was wobbled with about 80 seconds left in the 9th from a volley of thunderous blows. He attempted to return the favor but Ivan evaded most of his shots with a brilliant footwork and slick upper body movements.
Robinson continued his effective work in the final round but with less than a minute to go, he was badly shook by a pulverizing left hook which Gatti followed with a vicious assault. And with about 5 seconds left, his legs turned into jelly courtesy of another devastating left hook by Arturo.
However, Ivan made it to the final bell where Gatti raised both his hands believing he was victorious.
Rounds 9 and 10 were arguably the best rounds fought by Robinson and Gatti respectively as both were once again close to scoring a knockout just as they did in the 6th.
After 30 minutes of unflinching action, Ivan Robinson was the winner by SD10 in a stunning upset.
The 3 judges score it 98-93, 96-94 & 93-96. Harold Lederman had it 95-94 for Robinson.
By CompuBox Punchstats, Robinson landed precisely half his shots thrown; 400 connected punches with an exact 50% connect ratio in the best performance of his career.
The Ring Magazine named Arturo Gatti vs Ivan Robinson I as their Fight of the Year and Upset of the Year for 1998.
Enjoy this highlight of an explosive battle between 2 ring warriors, and don’t forget to SUBSCRIBE!
    Muchas gracias boxing heads.

    My scorecard for this fight:
    RD1 - Robinson 10-9 Gatti
    RD2 - Robinson 10-9 Gatti
    RD3 - Robinson 10-9 Gatti
    RD4 - Gatti 10-8 Robinson
    RD5 - Robinson 10-9 Gatti
    RD6 - Gatti 10-9 Robinson
    RD7 - Robinson 10-9 Gatti
    RD8 - Gatti 10-9 Robinson
    RD9 - Robinson 10-9 Gatti
    RD10 - Gatti 10-9 Robinson
    *Total = 95-94 Robinson*
Although this is a very close fight, but I still think as a whole Robinson did the better work and won rounds more clearly. However, the last round was particularly huge for Gatti as he nearly stopped Ivan with very little time left to the final bell.
What's your score? Let me know guys!

    • @luke125
      @luke125 5 років тому +5

Jeff Jackson - Absolutely. In fact I had it 96-94 for Robinson. So many people are asleep to this fight and it’s rematch which is understandable in a way because of the Gatti/Ward trilogy which overshadowed many of Gatti’s other epic wars in the ring. I’m so glad you covered these Jeff and I will definitely share this link with people. Great work

Everyone scores fights differently. I had the tenth 10-8. When the guy avoiding the action, tactically darting away and such but still gets hurt twice (once badly enough "out on his feet" finally fits). Idk. Everyone is different and Robinson did the better work throughout the fight. It's just hard to give such a close fight to a guy who was almost stopped a couple times, but that's boxing.

I had the first fight a draw. Robinson was almost out at least 3x. The second fight Robinson won 5 to 3 2 even. Imo But Robinson again was one punch from being knocked out in the last round. The ropes held him up. Gattis problem was he didn't go to the body enough. He would crush ivans ribs but just not enough. In fact I was told after the 1 fight he had to go to the hospital for rib xrays.

I knew Ivan Robinson after he retired. He worked as a staff member at a New Jersey state parole work release in Camden New Jersey. He was a very decent man. Mr Robinson mentored us. He advised us. he was not working there because that was high pay a lot of opportunity to advance. He was there because he cared about the lives, futures and families of men re-entering society and trying to live a good life. I respect Mr. Robinson and I always will have love in my heart for Ivan Robinson.

How anybody watched this and thought (RIP) Gatti was ever a match for Floyd is beyond me. He’s HoF, but, people just wanted to see Floyd lose at some point. I’ll say that point was after Castillo 1. All of a sudden he was a bad guy.

Ya, it’s kind of funny too. While I thought Castillo should probably have won or a draw, the fact is he had a 1handed fighter he was barely able to put meaningful punches on, and the rematch proved it out.

Round 2 and 5 were close. Round 6 was epic but I agree with what Lederman said. It seemed both fighters gassed after that (Gatti notably so in round 7). Round 8 Robinson essentially took off as Gatti just jabbed him over and over as his counter asked him to. I think round 9 won the fight for Robinson. Gatti stole the final round with the ‘near ko’ but not enough.
