There are a lot of Hornet drivers out there who would argue about the F-16 having an advantage in a dogfight. Though each aircraft has its own strengths and weaknesses, they are both pretty evenly matched in the end. What it all comes down to is which pilot can dictate the terms of the engagement and fight to his/her aircraft's strengths while nullifying the opponent's aircraft strengths. Yes, the F-16 can pull more maximum G's than an F-18. But the F-18 can move its nose a lot more for the amount of effort expended. One is a rate fighter, the other a radius fighter. The F-16 can sustain high G turns for longer durations. The F-18 has a higher instantaneous turn rate. The F-16 is at its best fighting at higher speeds. The F-18 excels when the fight gets slow. They are very different aircraft, yet equally effective.
The F-16 can turn inside the F-18 ,Is almost 200 mph faster, climbs faster and has a higher operational ceiling. All of which would make a F-16 incredibly difficult for a F-18 to defeat in a dogfight. In a strictly gun range fight the F-18 wouldn't be around very long. I don't know a how a F-18 Driver could expect to defeat a F-16 Driver in a Dogfight with the F-16's primary purpose was dogfighting with it's ground attack capabilities being a secondary requirement during it's designing
@TheJacko1970 what he said is extremely accurate. The f16 is best when in a rate fight. F18 can turn on a dime at slow speeds. His comment was literally perfect lol both jets could easily best the other depending on the circumstances

The F16 is better for the AF and the F18 is better for the Navy. Different roles.
This. The original fly off between the YF-16 and YF17 was won by the 16. It met the Air Force request. But the Navy lined the YF-17 and got McDonnell Douglas to up the design for Carrier Ops.
They fill different roles.
And the F-16 has been operational since the mid-70's ! 🇺🇸

F-16 viper is a BOSS. Hornet is alright but F-16 is a BVR boss as well as a nimble dogfighter if they allowed a fighter to get close.

The F-16 has an unrefueled combat range of 340 miles. The F-18 has an unrefueled combat range of 640 miles. Please explain how the F-16 has a “greater range” than the F-18….
Variety is the best sauce
The Air Force evaluated both as prototypes and chose the F-16. By definition, that makes it the better fighter.... for the Air Force.
I think you need to rethink the ‘more G forces’….the Navy says only 7.5. Had been to 9 plus a little many times.
The F16 is still in production, but now being manufactured in South Carolina for foreign countries. It may actually be around until 2100.
If it isn't broken don't fix it, still a great and budget friendly fighter.

So the advantage in a dogfight between f16 and f18 is gonna come down to the pilot. If it's a rate fight that goes to the f16. In a 1 circle fight the nose authority of the f18 would dominate.

You are totally wrong about the F-18s range of operations, there’s no version of the F-16 that can carry up to x5 external drop tanks, and a fully topped off interior tanks,, that is why the United States 🇺🇸 Navy chooses it as its main war fighter aircraft,, and not some weak assed remake of the F-16. I personally know this,, because for some x8 years,, I was the ground control plane captain,, for the F-18 strike fighter aircraft, and served with x3 different aircraft carriers at that time of service 😉

I love the F-16 but I love 2 engines to keep me up in the air too!
In my opinion, the F-16 can may be, in some ways, more mobile, but sucks, along with the F-35.
As for the F-14s, F-15s & F-18s, they are WAY better than the F-16 & pretty good compared to the F-35. I remember them being on aircraft carriers. Need proof? How do you think they made their way into the classic movie “Top Gun” in the 80s & in the Desert Storm attacks in the 2000s?…

To me, a civilian, pound for pound it's like choosing between a lambo and a Ferrari.
I can't afford either and if given one for free would smile driving either,but...
F18 would have better landing gear for sloppy landings and I'd rather lose 1 engine thanks to birds than junk millions of bucks of jet by losing the only engine .
Plus,I'd prefer central control stick of f18 and I'd have an Aussie built one because our pilots didn't flog them out by showboating.

But let’s also talk bout the f-18, the nose authority will absolutely shat on u in the one circle, the second the f-16 is in a scissors or roller, the f-18 is going to sneak that nose out in front and bye bye. So I’m the end, in reality it’s all about how the pilot thinks, if the hornet pilot is smart, he will win, but if the 16 pilot is smarter, he will win.
