They knew what they were doing with Chel
And we're not complaining
A true awakening for so many people
I’m surprised by how explicit the movie is, without being explicit
Oh yeah
16:34 especially the adult jokes.
Chel is truly a lot of boys awakenings
It’s my first time seeing her, something was definitely awakening when she popped up
Meanwhile Miguel and Tulio were mine 😆
It was Chel, Esmeralda, Jane, and Megara for many in the late 90s.
@@cmrobbins88actually, the road to el dorado was released in 2000.
Kida from Atlantis 😁
Never apologise for sometimes watching stuff just for your own enjoyment, Holden. UA-camrs gotta have lives outside content creation too. Glad you and Jen enjoyed Apocalypto, you deserve some YOU time!
I 2nd this
It’s honestly better cause you get their true reactions. ^^ listen to this guy
Ah Chel. A childhood crush and modern day crush
It's called the "Road to" El Dorado partially because its a bit of an animated spiritual successor to a series of comedy adventure movies from the 1940-60s starring Bob Hope and Bing Crosby, all starting with "Road to..." They often played conman and one of the recurring bits was creating a distraction between the two of them to get out of fights. There's also usually a love interest that gets between them. As Holden said, they were trying to target the adults taking their children to the movies too.
“They had show that he didn’t die”
This reminds me of George of the Jungle where the guy falls to his apparent death but the narrator says “don’t worry nobody dies in this story, they just get really big boo boos”
Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio (Pirates of the Caribbean, Mask of Zorro, Shrek) wrote this. Makes sense, this sort of movie is their specialty.
Also, one step closer to Atlantis, Treasure Planet, (hopefully) Titan A.E. and (even more hopefully) Final Fantasy The Spirits Within!!
An underrated gem from DreamWorks. One of my favorite animated movies ever
I was literally looking for someone who was gonna say “underrated” because underrated is used EVERY 2 SECONDS on UA-cam with every movie reaction!!
Wow I did a double take when I saw the movie title for this one. I would have never thought you'd pull out this gem to watch. This is one of my favourite movies of all time; Watch it at least once a year. So glad you guys enjoyed it :)
Chel (and Eris from Sinbad, another early Dreamworks movie) were my first childhood crushes EASILY 🫣
Kevin Kline and Kenneth Branaugh recorded all of their lines together in the studio. They even had brought in prop swords while recording the duel.
Elton John and Tim Rice reunited for the soundtrack, although not as well received as The Lion King.
There WAS supposed to be a sequel or two to The Road to El Dorado but due to not being massively successful this did not happen. It was inspired by a bunch of old movies from the 1940's called "Road To" series that takes the two protagonist around the world to many exotic locations.
Bro dont apologize for having a life and watching a film on your own . We still here 🤙
As quick mentions, for this movie, El Dorado was created taking architecture and graphic depictions from Chichen-Itza (mayan), Tenochtitlan (mexica) and Cusco (inca).
Chel is a pretty creative free representation of Malintzin known in Mexico as 'La Malinche' a native woman who was Cortés translator, embassador and lover.
And last but not least, Miguel and Tulio are inspired by the story of Jerónimo de Aguilar and Gonzalo Guerrero, two spaniards castaways, who ended up in Yucatán, the first keeping his spanish ways, while Guerrero got fascinated by mayan culture, and turned into one of them.
So, I never realized until recently that the Chieftain was vocied by Edward James Olmos, and that he very likely knew that Tylio and Miguel were human like the rest of them, but was okay with that.
Holden! You don't need to apologize for watching something on your own time. It's good to have a distinction from your life and UA-cam. Plus it helps u enjoy the movie on your own without having to make it into content.
It's one of the pet peeves I have from other reaction channels that they sacrifice watching amazing movies in theaters just so they can react to it at home for content instead of enjoying a movie as it's meant to be experienced
So don't apologize haha your good
Yeah. Their jobs become their life and it becomes the only way they experience stories. It's not healthy.
To this very day, I still have the movie on VHS.
And, I only have the 📀.
That reaction to chel and tulio coming back into frame when they were doing the thing offscreen was pricless.
To this day, NO main character duo has had the same chemistry as Tulio and Miguel. Both actors were absolutely at the top of their game for this film. Utterly unparalleled.
The guy who bet the map to El Dorado at the beginning is voiced by Tobin Bell aka John Kramer/Jigsaw
And just like Tarzan this soundtrack absolutely slaps beyond measure👏🏽
Elton John didn't have to go that hard..
But he did for us!
That’s what I have in mind.
@@oddbjrnhaugen2742just like Phil collins.
this trail we blaze literal fire
Hard disagree
Whenever the Rogue and the Bard separate from the party
High charisma, low reputation.
You guys should totally react to Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. One of the BEST and most underrated movies to come out of Dreamworks.
oh, Jen would be so into it
Hope to see a reaction for Titan A.E at some point ! I only watched it in theater I think, when I was 10 years old and I remember it was very cool as a science fiction animated film, and it was probably my first time seeing very clear 3D animation mixed with 2D animation (after Tarzan)
Another pretty good DreamWorks animation that I think both kids and adults would enjoy is "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron".
It's got a brilliant soundtrack involving both Hans Zimmer and Bryan Adams.
As well as Matt Damon as one of the leading roles.
I think especially Jen might enjoy it. Did I mention there are horses in this movie?
Childhood movie, song 'trail we blaze' bangs too
As mexican, you can't imagine how appreciated this movie is for me, even when It isn't historically accurate, I love that the world got a chance to discover and be amused by mesoamerican cultures.
Yay! So glad you’re reacting to this one! 🤩 I know you said it’s ‘cause of your anniversary and stuff, but I totally suggested it in your reaction to ‘Emperor’s New Groove,’ so I’m taking credit 😎 😄 I hope you love it! 🤩
The soundtrack is also amazing. I love it.
Tarzan and el dorado have the greatest soundtracks.
The fact that it uses Elton John music, as well as the fact that there are scenes that strongly resemble scenes from Disney movies is no accident the same way that Shrek, another DreamWorks movie poking fun at Disney was no accident.
This is easily one of my favorite movies of all time. The comedy is so good.
FUN FACT:
There might not have been a city of gold, but there was a large temple area that had a lot of gold and silver in it, and it was discovered in 1949 in Cusco Peru and, is said to be important to the Inca's sun god.
It is called Coricancha. I think
These late 90's and early 2000's animated films really are great ones. Atlantis for example is one of my all time Disney favourites :D I remember watching Treasure Planet only 5-8 years ago and I was really surprised how amazing it was! For some reason it never interested me as a kid, may be partly because I'm usually not too much into sci-fi.
I really love this movie!!! As a Mexican this has a lot of historical accuracy, of course not the city of gold and the huge jaguar coming back to life hahaha. But to explain Jen why the "Conquistadores" were not involved, is because Hernan Cortes (main Conquistador), is a real Spaniard that conquered Mexico, he tried to find El Dorado (which he never did) after hearing that Christopher Columbus crew found gold, but before Cortes, another group of Spaniards arrived, and they taught a young native girl how to speak Spanish, and she was called "La Malinche" portrayed in this movie by Chel.
I love the music in this movie, SOOOO GOOD
In High School Spanish 2 class, we had to watch this in Spanish and have a discussion about this movie. I love this movie!
I loved this movie growing up and to me, it's such an underrated classic.
El Dorado is in Uncharted: Drakes Fortune and Xibalaba is in Tomb Raider: Underworld
Funnily enough the latest Tomb Raider movie used Uncharted's explanation for El Dorado in its version of Himiko.
El Dorado is in Arkansas
4th favorite Dreamworks film and favorite hand drawn film from the studio
On yalls topic of apocalypto, my grandparents are mayan and they've never been to a movie theater, until it came out. My aunt and uncles took them and, i assume, they were the only ones that understood the dialog in the entire theather.
Now check the Simbad seven seas, and the Atlantis movies (it even got a tv series series just like Tarzan did).
Jim Cummings as Cortes is insane if you think about it. never realized as a kid, totally transformative
The lighting brings out Jen's loveliness.
I've been following you since "My girlfriend reacts" so couple of years now and I really like you guys. You give some much new aspects to reacting and good energy and now you are reacting to my #2 favourite animated movie. You have to watch #1 Atlantis after this one and #3 Brother Bear. Great family animated movies you won't regret them. Greetings from Bulgaria!
Got this movie on dvd
You guys totally need to watch Home on the Range at some point, hands down one of Disney's most underrated movies
I spend the day logging and watching these to show my wife later , when you up loaded this one I got hyped for lunch hour to watch this 🎉 love the videos bud - mule
03:53 - it's always the marketing.
I don't think I've seen any marketing for Atlantis and Road to El Dorado. As for Treasure Planet and Sinbad, there's minimal, with an additional McDonald's happy meal toys for Treasure Planet. Other than that, they really didn't bother...
The Road to El Dorado, The Iron Giant, The Emperor's new groove, Treasure Planet, Titan A.E. The Prince of Egypt, Ferngully are all awesome animated movies to me.
In some places of México, it is believed that the the city of Tenochtitlan (Mexico City present day) was extremely clean compared to what the Europeans were used to, so clean that the sun reflected it’s light against the bright buildings making them shine like gold during the day. From a distance, the Spaniards believed they had finally found the famous “City of Gold”
8:15 there’s actually some historical context to this. When the Europeans sailed for the New World, they had to lighten the ships’ loads. They couldn’t get rid of any food they brought along, they certainly couldn’t throw any of the passengers or crew overboard, but they could jettison their horses into the sea.
You would like the ecological park there, it's called XCaret. We went swimming with dolphins and there's a bunch of underwater stuff to do there. So much fun. Isla Mujeres was really nice too. We went swimming with bull sharks there and did an open water swim with wild bull sharks there as well
On the sexualization of Chel: There is that meme about where she pops up from in that one scene with her and Tulio. Basically, she wasn't by his face...
I watched a whole documentary on this city. I guess El Dorado actually translates to the golden man. Now I cant remember the name of the place but there is a lake on top of the mountain where a man painted with gold would jump into a lake covered in gold on a ship with gold and would jump into a the lake. Once he came out he was the ruler. That tradition became the story of El Dorado. But at that time the people would trade gold for salt because at the time salt was more valuable than gold
My god I’ve completely forgot about this film! I loved this film as a kid!
Grew up watching it and love it and in my opinion Miguel is the God of fun while Tulio is the God of Calculation
When this movie came out Disney and Dreamworks were both trying to go back to old school animation but it sadly failed on both ends
Failed to meet high expectations and then also undercut their own work by mismanaging advertisement campaigns and then later purposefully tanking the 2D-heavy studios (in Disney's case)
The Road to El Dorado(just El Dorado in my language) is one of my favorite movies of all time.
My wife ava I went there during our honeymoon and first anniversary years ago. We love Mexico
@holdenandjenhardman Thank you for watching this underrated gem I still have this movie on DVD
I watch this movie all the time never gets old hope you can watch legends of Sinbad or Joseph King of dreams soon
That looked like an amazing vacation, always loved the Maya and Mesoamerican archeology.
But y'all really doing all the great animated movies! I have been enjoying this series a lot and can't wait to see what's next!
It's totally ok that you guys didn't do a reaction to Apocalipto. Just hearing Jen liked it so much is enough for me. Also, this movie is great, grew up with it, me and my sister would just repeat Tulio and Miguel's lines over and over. It is not, however, underrated, I think a lot of these movies bomb for a reason. The characters don't really change, they would have if Miguel had indeed stayed there, but they begin and end the movie in the exact same spot, broke and off to look for another treasure. Without much plot or character development, it only really has charm, and that's seldom enough.
16:33 I was waiting to see Jen's reaction. Infamous scene.
Jen's love for the horse makes me think she'll really enjoy the 2002 movie, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. It's a fun story about a wild horse, Indians, and the American West. Very underrated movie with a geeat soundtrack. Definitely think its worth a watch; reaction or not.
16:36 the expression in Jen’s face! lol
Apocalypto is one of my favorite movies ever, glad you guys like it so much. It’s ok if you guys watch movies on your own just relaxing not worrying about making content out of it.
YES, please continue the ride. Atlantis next?
"My crew was as carefully chosen as the Disciples of Christ..." has to be one of the hardest intro lines from a villain lol
Speaking of Animated, I recommend Kungfu Panda 4 & Zootopia. Awesome movies for you.
Señor Holden, are you planning on doing a Chichen Itza travel vlog?
Saludos desde México, glad you enjoyed your visit...!
(Also those mics reminded me of Jamie Foxx's Electro...)
Yes I am!
Don't ever apologize for watching films on your own time. Yes, the content would be much appreciated but, in the end, it's all about what makes you happy. Just like any job, this can ruin your love of movies if you're not careful. Don't let it do that to you.
Titan A.E. Reaction. Not related to the films you mention the intro but I think it definitely deserves a watch. Definitely need to compare it to the other animated films.
Yessssss!!!!!!! All time favorite movie.
This is one of the vhs tapes that we had growing up (in a very Christian household ironically) and I’ve seen it so much that I have most of the dialogue memorized 😭 (also Chel was definitely an early bi awakening for me 👌🏼)
Lets goooooooo. One of the greatest animations
Definitely need to do treasure planet can’t wait till you guys doit.
Treasure Planet is so underrated! So is Atlantis.
4:30 it is indeed! So here’s a fun fact for you. After the success of The Lion King, Disney had actually planned on making an Elton John theme park but those plans never came to fruition because Jeffrey Katzenberg had stepped down as Disney’s CEO shortly thereafter. However, Sir Elton still maintained a strong friendship with Katzenberg so when he asked Sir Elton to write songs for his new studio’s movie The Road to El Dorado, Sir Elton said yes.
The road to Elderado was always my dads favourite when i was growing up, some of the others that we would watch regularly were :
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron
the Atlantis movies
Sinbad
Emperors new groove
Tarzan
The Jungle book
i hope you will watch these ones
THIS MOVIES THE BEST CUZ YA BOI ELTON JOHN DID THE SOUNDTRACK!!!!
Totally agree with comment, treasure planet was my jam. But yeah they all got way bigger later in life
This movie is my childhood 😭😭
Please watch Atlantis & Treasure Planet! Both great underrated films.
No joke both are amazing Adventure films for all ages
100% must see!
11:35 I think this was what some of the natives thought of Hernan Cortez when he landed in what is now Mexico. Some of them thought he was the god Montezuma in flesh.
Partially right. Although that version is being contested by modern interpretations (there is a whole revisionist movement about the native history of the country). To tweak your memories a bit:
-Montezuma was the then ruler of the Aztec Empire, he was a real person.
-The deity that, according to the legend and the current version, Cortés used in his favor was Quetzalcoatl.
Fastest ive clicked a video on this channel
Fun fact Jim Cummings, yes the voice of Winnie the Pooh, voices Cortes
Tarzan now this, you are watching my old favorites
AND THE GUY WHO RECOMMENDED SINBAD TOO IS SMART AS HELL!
We need a coco reaction 💯
you guys looked so tired during this, but still had fun :)
I watch the VHS of this as a kid so much I broke the tape
This film is a treasure 😁
23:23 I liked it how tzekel khan loses his bet.
Need yall to react to Dune and Dune 2 🙌🏻
Oh man I hope you enjoyed Mexico, it's bit chaotic rn cause you know elections, but Yucatán along with Quintana Roo are truly beautiful.
Hi Holden you and your wife should watch Atlantis shark tail and robots
Elton John had sum with this soundtrack
If you guys haven’t already on your own time, please react to the fountain!!!
One of the best movie, 10\10
Holden, I was wondering if you got to see that recommendation I had sent you on the Deadpool and Wolverine trailer (before the re-upload). But I don’t think it would hurt for me to send it again.
