This is the kind of honest experience driven information I love about your channel Elias. For all the new subs here, you’ve found your new favorite channel.
I know that you don't like doing these type of videos Elias, but there are those of us that need them and especially from folks like you that we trust. Thanks.
EXACTLY!!!
If I ever thought about getting in a kayak, this is where I'd come for info. Keep it going, man.
Really appreciate the genuine honesty in these videos. I have the OT Sportsman 120 and the comment about weight is accurate, thing is a nightmare to put on top of the car and drag through sand.
Try taking the Sportsman 106 to your 3rd floor apartment.
It's a lot of fun.
Smart to have that ring camera overlooking your fleet!
Thanks, Elias. Hope your shoulder heals quick!
Great video! I’ve had the Salty PDL 120 for 6 months and LOVE it. The only thing I think they could improve is some tool storage up front and hull slap. I’ve had a PA12, a Topwater PDL 106, and autopilot 136. The salty is just so convenient, fast, and maneuverable.
Injury or not, I hope you do one of these a year. It's so refreshing to just hear someone who uses stuff give an honest, no BS, opinion. **cough no couch**
I greatly appreciate an honest candid review of something from someone who uses the something on a regular basis. I'd prefer an Outback over a PA12 (mostly because of it's weight), but I'm 6'4"(ish) and weigh in at 260(ish) and the PA has a much higher weight capacity than any of the others you reviewed - I'm not worried about sinking, but fully loaded, I'm pretty low in the water and it gets pretty wet.
After destroying numerous carts under my PA14, in the local soft sand, I ended up having a cart made at a local metal workshop. Sure, its heavy compared to the others, but it works and for the last 4 years or so, has yet to fail on me. Altho saying that I cant help but feel I have just invited the hand of fate to intervene...
Great video Elias and I hope your shoulder heals up real soon for you.
I just got a brand new 2021 compass with the turbo fins. Definitely appreciate the warning about those set screws and potential cracks on the hull to keep an eye on. Keep on doing what your doing man not many honest guys out there like you.
Hey Matt, I’m about to get an ocean fishing kayak, I was looking at the compass. What do you think of it? Is it worth it?
hope your shoulder heals! I dislocated both of mine and now they dislocate whenever i pick up anything over 100 pounds. constant pain too. be sure to take care of it! Shoulder injuries suck!
Thanks for the awesome perspective from someone who actually fishes hard unlike alot of reviews you see on here.
Great video. I own the Sportsman 120 auto pilot and found a kayak cart that fits perfectly. The Wilderness Heavy Kayak Cart. Good for 450 lbs. and is adjustable. $200.00. I’m 71 years old and I just lay the kayak on it’s side and the cart on it’s side and flip the kayak right side up and it’s ready to go. Keep up the great videos.
Hank Pretz Kayak Fishing
The spot lock on the old town is pretty killer. I get scared putting an anchor down on the Hobie outback in the Long Island sound.
Dropping anchor in a kayak is sketchy anywhere in big water
Why is it scary? I'm buying my first kayak for inshore fishing and this sounds important to know! 😳
@@1pdigit swells and flipping...
@@EvansGoneFishing oh ok, gotcha thanks for the reply!
This is just a great and honest kayak review with tons of valid information. Great vid!
Thanks for your input!!!!
My friends at work and I are looking and doing ALOT of research on the kayaks we're willing to invest in so this video has given us alot of answers to some of the questions we ask ourselves.
Thanks for the review of these questions
This was really helpful, thank you. Would you do one on your fish finder setups and how you keep them working, it's a struggle.
Get well, don't rush the shoulder as it ranks like #1 for pain for anyone who has surgerys. Love your stuff.
Love it that you say couch fishermen. It’s so many guys buy a HOBIE and don’t fish out of it. The matching truck and marine mat pretty boys that don’t have enough slime for one fish are funny. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thank you for sharing your experience and thoughts in this review. I thought it was an honest, from the heart review and you were not trying to sell boats.
I've been trying to get an Old Town Predator PDL for the last year. I found out that they stopped producing it in black cherry. I'm on my third vendor for one reason or another. I'm getting an Old Town Sportsman Bigwater PDL in Photic Camo, and it will be here by the end of May 2021.
Hey man! Rig your kayak cart with bigger wheels. Sninnier but taller tires will do the trick for deep sand. I've seen a guy use 12" bicycle wheels. Yes, requires some rigging up, but definitely doable.
Hope you're bum wing is feeling better soon Elias. I've been there before with a couple of shoulder injuries too. No fun.
With as much experience as you have fishing from a kayak, your opinions really do pull plenty of weight. They help guide us newbie's in the right direction when it comes to kayak fishing. That being said....still can't top your no nonsense fishing vids!
the V1 had twist cam locks... My 2007 Revo 13 had the cam locks and the penguin fins.
I have a Outback and use the C-Tug cart system which has been good to me. Maybe try the c tug out? No problems carting it on sand and rock launch spots.
I find carting on the return to be the biggest pain. Getting the cart under the kayak from the water to the land and to then to the vehicle is the biggest challenge bc all the gear is on the kayak and it’s the heaviest. I’ve seen some people create ways to put the wheels under while the kayak is still in the water and without getting in the water but only via scuppers. Having a cart you strap allows wheels to be closer to the seat and puts more of the kayaks weight onto the wheels and makes pulling it easier.
Pushing is easier than pulling. Try it, you might like it. You might want to check out Navarre Kayak Fishing, Nick puts out some good information.
@@eddielikesfishing thanks! I'm checking him out now, looks like he has many helpful ideas. I've tried pushing a little and it does seem a little easier for a straight path but control is tougher when turning, kind of like a forklift
Perfect timing! I'm in the market for a new kayak! Any chance for a gear rundown like you did a few years back?
I love the ctug cart. I used it for my Nucanoe frontier and Outback. It took 200lbs no problem
Hey Elias. Ah, a video I'm looking forward to. I have an OldTown 120 AutoPilot and I have used a Hobie Outback. Think it as a 12 Ft. with Mirage Drive with the pull strap reverse. I enjoyed using it. My first 5 trips Kayaking. I have seen vids discussing the cracking issues. seems to be related to carts using the skuppers. Eli, The Wilderness does absolutely Fit on the 120 Auto Pilot Properly. Tip the 120 on it's Side. Slap the Cart up to the bottom of the Kayak Directly under the seat. 1 strap behind the cross brace, 1 strap under the seat. Cinch it up. Balance is perfect and I at 73 with Emphesma can roll the cart to my van,, slid in the nose, the Pick the cart and the kayak up in the air and shove it under the front dashboard. I'll send a pic in the patrion. I could not fish if I had to stay with the Malone. Threw my Malone away after 3 months. I'm using the FPV. 2x50AH in parallel but I'm worn out at 4 hours or 5 hours.
Hard to find anything But the Malone trailer. Was ready to order a small trailer with torsion axles made in PA just when Covid hit. But, they're still out of production.
You probably hurt that shoulder hauling in all those big fish! Great review.
Couch kayak fisherman 😂!!!
This is such a great video. After 2 years with the OldTown 120 AutoPilot I am back looking at smaller lighter Kayaks. Going back and forth between the Compass which is super Light. and some other barnds. I don't want to move to a Lynx but want to be in a 75ish lb hull weight. I'm wishing the lightening was about 10 lbs lighter.
Thanks for sharing your views, excellent content as always! I hope you heal quickly.
Yep, Kayak Catfish is one I watch, too!
I have a 2018 Outback and a 2015 revo 11.. Sold the revo recently but it was hard to let go of that old glide drive.
Such enthusiasm on that intro!😂😂
Been looking into the old towns so this should help
Hope your shoulder heals quickly.......fish on!!!
There are guys who do a mod for simracing equipment, it has spring loaded ball bearings retained by the housing and grub screws. Shame they aren’t into hobies also
Back watching reruns... I ended up getting a Lynx. still not convinced I that was a good decision rather than a Lightening Kayak. I don't think you'll ever be able to "roll" the 120 Auto on soft sand with a cart. At 76 I struggle just getting my 120 Auto which weighs over 150 lbs loaded into and then empty out of the water and into my van only feet away. I actually had to work out with a trainer to lift the yak. Again I've had Malone and they suck for the 120 Auto Pilot. I like the Wilderness cart with the hard wheels... I would never attempt to pull any cart over loose sand with the 120 Auto. I cant imagine... lol Hey you look younger here lol
Man I have a old town pdl. there is a few things I don’t like about it mainly the amount of crap that will get stuck on the prop, you will have to open the driver and clean to use again. There is also a pin behind the prop that will break often make sure to bring a bunch with you.
Hey try the wilderness systems kayak cart with inflatable wheels, there’s also a mod specifically for fitting the autopilot from Navarre fishing
I'll take a stab at giving some really good advice Elias, First this cart fits perfectly under the ap120 I promise. Pretty sure the ap136 has the same shape underside to its hull. Wilderness Systems Heavy Duty Kayak Cart | Flat-Free Wheels | 450 Lb Weight Rating | for Kayaks and Canoes
No straps, just drop the back end of the kayak onto the fixed rails (adjust to fit the grooves and tighten while the kayak is upside down) and shimmy it into position. The closer to the center of the kayak ypu position the cart allows easier lugging! Its a very solid cart and I dunk it in saltwater every trip and it is holding up so far this summer. and secondly, and this is a must have! get a Victron SmartShunt for your Dakota lithium battery. The shunt uses bluetooth to pair to your cell phone and the complete battery status is displayed EASILY!. Ahr balance / amp draw at current speed setting / charge remaining is displayed and the history of charge cycles is stored. Get this shunt and never guess how many amps you have left. rough current, head on wind and you can be sure how much juice you have left. Check out W Prose ytube video on how easy it is to add to your battery. It fits in the gp27 box, on top of your 100 Ahr LifePO4 battery. Victron Energy SmartShunt 500 amp Battery Monitor (Bluetooth) Made in the Netherlands. Thanks for your video, as always I learn so much from you!... I am really pleased to pass some knowledge that I also know to be helpful to you for once... tim
Victron shunt tutorial is by will prowse.... and today i launched from the abysmal concrete/sand/rock ramp at ft wetherill scuba landing and i absolutely needed to strap the wilderness cart on tightly through the scuppers, but i managed (straps that came with the cart).
Props to you fishing so much on a kayak man, that shit is exhausting lol. I don’t have a peddle kayak but I just went snakehead fishing the other day and loading it up on the Jeep and taking it off and dragging it etc wears you down. Is Elias ever gonna get a boat tho? 🤔
Great information, thanks for sharing your experience.
Thanks for sharing your real world thoughts on those kayaks .
I use a wilderness cart with my AP, I bought a ctug first and didn’t have great luck with it, it would rub on the hull. But wilderness cart works good. Good luck!
Awesome video Elias!! I own the AP 136.
I live in Az. It works great for me.
Very nice video Elias 👍 will definitely do some kayak fishing one day 💪
The Vibe is cool because they'll take a Hobie 180 drive. I question the stability versus something like a Hobie PA14
I know you don't like doing this but thank you you are the man appreciate it brother
Man I remember when you first got the revo and the reaction going from what you had to it in that old dry suit lol good times my friend
He didn't shake yall down!!! That couch kayak fisherman line was absolutely priceless. 🍻
Man I know you don’t like doing these videos but I really appreciate them! 🙌🏻🤙🏻
You ever want to check out a Native, come visit your folks, I can bring mine down to Taughannock Falls.
Interesting how you mention no problems with customer service. I waited for my 2021 h
Outback for 5 months only to find it had no seat when it arrived, any advice? Super frustrating but great video, watch them all keep it up.
Your lucky. Many are coming without the drive
Hope your shoulder feels better soon so you can slay some more big ones 👊 🎣 🚣♂️
I had to rewire mine as well. I had no power to the motor. There are 2 LEDs in the bow section on a circuit board that's not visible unless you remove it. It's where the power leads and the micro switches come together. Old town believed the circuit board or the micro switches were defective and sent out a new set up, it went in easy, but that wasn't the problem. It was crimp on the positive lead going to the motor that needed re-crimping. after that the motor worked fine. The LEDs are for the 2 micro switches, why they choose to hide them is beyond me. They both have to illuminate for the motor to run,
I trailer mine it's too heavy to screw around with a rack. I built a modified Malone micro trailer with a bunk set up and this should be good. i also have a wilderness system cart with beach wheels, but i have to let you know if & when i ever use it. Thanks for the review, Ed
I'd rather see you fishing, but good info till you get healthy. Shoulder surgery put me in my first outback this year. Hope I catch you here in Florida sometime
Love the no BS attitude. Strait up Your opinion. Heel up
I just bought a Salty pdl 120 and really like it. It is a rocket. Downside is storage and fishfinder installation. Interested in your opinion someday when you cant get out.
That's my only negative with oldtowns is storage. Hobie has much better storage systems.
@@reykennedy5716 It is tough as nails. Does well on roads at 40mph too. Don’t ask…..🤐
Personally enjoyed this one!
Interesting vid, albeit, got a bit long in the tooth. I’ve had my Vibe Shearwater 125 since September and love it! Hope ur shoulder feels better soon.
Thanks for sharing Elias
Kayak Catfish uses a waverunner trailer for his iPilot. Is that something you would be able to do? He posted pictures of the unexpected package this morning from his favorite UA-cam channel. He's my favorite so I hopped on over to see your videos. I'm trying to figure out which kayak will be best for me so I appreciate you guys doing these reviews and walk throughs.
I’d like to see him try a vibe shearwater with the hobie drive and get his thoughts.
Very honest comments Elias. I do really like and enjoy your videos. You mention the Salty PDL as a cool Kayak, any other comment about it? Do you use it? I am considering buying it and I would love to know your honest opinion about it. Thanks
Good stuff. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for your insight, heal up.
I’m pushing 50, the revo is a nice and lightweight, but more importantly balanced well. But yea, 5 hours max
I just sold my 2016. A bit narrow for me
IF NEEDED< Get a wilderness cart. I've had both and the Wilderness is heads and tails better.
Overview and honest feedback. Enjoyed the video, even if you didn’t. 😜
I'm from NC, I've done more surf fishing and fishing on boats primarily but I'm really wanting to get into off shore kayak fishing. I would love to pick your brain and get your input on how not to die!
Shoulder injuries is a big indicator perhaps you need to ditch that tank of an PDL. Aside from the horrible hull crack reports for hobie which is always disappointing, it's still a good indicator that you're still using the HO as your primary yak. Thanks for the "real" review from someone who's not couch/youtube fishing.
New sub! Thanks for the insight!!🤙
Couch fisherman good 1
JMO, the 120 autopilot is still holding up as my favorite for OldTown but I haven't useud the new ePDL... How do you feel after having used both?
Feel Better Bro!
Is that the house stark crest there on your arm? Great vid, love your channel.
He starts talking Old Town at 14:44.
Can you get an after-market antenna for the Stop Lock? The GPS should not crap out on you under bridges like that.
Have you looked at the BornSalty Breakwater yaks at all? I've been impressed with what I've seen of them so far
Good information thanks
I have a predator PDL. If it melted into a puddle I would order another one the very next day.
Why do you like fishing the outback over the ap136?
Man you need to hop in my Salty and give it a shot.
Only thing that would maybe take some getting used to on the salty is the highish seat position. Kinda need a higher seat on a pdl tho to accommodate the pdl pedal motion. Lot of my tracking issues went away when I tightened everything.
@@TridentDriver you need to try the peppery
@@andrewunruh8344 You need to try the Trident 13.
@@TridentDriver what company makes that? Vibe?
Just a thought but have you thought about the boondocks landing gear
I really like the Hobie OutBack and want to purchase one new, but I am hearing a lot about cracked hulls and hull replacement. What is your experience? Have you ever had a cracked hull on Hobie Products? I saw you on Salt Strong Thanks Tom
Hey man, I'm from your old area..(Brooklyn ny) is there a rule or just common sense on where to take your kayak? I'll go out of plumb beach area, but i don't want to get waked or be in the way of the large boats. So where should i keep to if I'm in the yak fishing. Thanks
Hey Elias. I am looking to buy an autopilot 120. My only concern was the weight and transport. I fabricated one out of steel for my current kayak. Maybe that would that could be a route to go if you know any welders or shops.
I would be curious to hear why you chose the Lightning Kayak as a backup instead of another Hobie. Was it just by chance or?
Hope the shoulder isn’t your labrum/rotator cuff! Rest bro! And then see how it feels! Feel better soon...
Great Video.
Would you say the lightning is faster than the older outbacks?
I'm looking for something to fish in the chesapeake bay, I have a 2014 outback and I like the stability of it but the thing just seems so slow compared to newer outbacks
So what don’t you like about the pro angler 12 I just got one a couple weeks ago I like it so far but what do I need to watch out for it’s a 2020 so what don’t you like
I think the kayak manufacturers should start rethinking the front portion of kayaks we don't need it for storage we need it for fishing, open it up !
What's couch fishing?
Maybe just get a trailer for the auto pilot. If the boat launch is far from your spot all that should be negated by the advantage of the motor
No stringers in NC? Weird
never mind u answered the question.
