  • This video is a request from my subscriber Kevin Abadie from Norway, he asked me to show how I added that "vintage" sound to one of my last videos, so here we go. Using an old cover of "The River" by Bruce Springsteen which I played some years ago, Superior Drummer 3 as a VST and mainly plugins from Plugin Alliance. Enjoy!

Hey Mike, thanks a lot ! I really appreciate that you went to great length to share with us your mixing process/mindset. Indeed, sometimes, a little goes a long way and it is great to be reminded that back then, they did not have all the options we do have today! Thanks again, that is great content :-)

Great advice here Mike. Being a user of SD3 and a Roland TD15 I really appreciate your channel. This software is as simple or complicated as you want to make it, and the secret when recording with it is not to be tempted to use too much and to over think it. Your advice to keep things as simple as people did in the 70s is bang on.

I’d love to see a similar video to this except using it in a harder rock/punk/metal song. My absolute favorite drum sound is on Refused’s album The Shape of Punk to Come. Somehow it has a very open, organic/natural drum sound while still cutting through a dense heavy rock mix

Another great video! Thank you... I have SD3 running now and I feel like I am starting all over trying to learn the UI and how to use everything all over again. Keep em coming.

Great tutorial Mike, I do like the template you are using. I watched this video on my IPad but I will watch it again on my computer so I will able to see better what you did. For me is mixing and mastering a song at the end the most interesting thing to learn. I always use a extra track after the mix buss for mastering the song. Have a great weekend my dear friend. ✌️🍺😎👊

Great video as always Mike! Still beating myself over missing the sale on Lindell 80, it’s a good 1073 plugin. Danke schön! First week learning German lol

Hey Mike first of all awesome video there is always so much to learn about all of this mixing at least for me and your drum sounds are always great so really appreciate these kind of breakdown videos explaining everything
I have previously left a comment about my failed attempt at getting the drum sound from Matt Mcguire‘s new rules drum cover
you recommended me some expansion packs from superior drummer and I now have those
however I don’t know a lot about mixing myself so even though I now have these amazing samples which I think is awesome I still have difficultys geting to that sound
I was wondering if you could give me some tips about specifics or maybe even make a video but that is probably too much to ask but damn that would be amazing
i’m definitely also still willing to purchase other sample packs if there are a specific drum or symbol that you think would match this sound better if that is something you think would help
basically what I’m trying to say is I don’t want to just go the” cheaper” route And don’t want to limit myself only to one pack if I can get closer by combining multiple
I’m trying to get a really good sound as close to the one from the cover as possible and I don’t mind if that means investing a bit of money in some sample packs
Sorry for the long comment and sorry for going on about this but my electronic drum kit is my main drum kit for practice and for playing/Jamming with my “band” and musician friends so it is really important to me that it sounds great
    hope you can help

I really like the new way they are making each instrument into a self contained DAW.
For me, The way I can leave all the drums inside its own world makes it so much easier to edit and arrange the parts.
Only bad part is now I have to figure out how to afford the crossgrades for all my Toontrack software... LOL
    Great video, thank you!

Hey, great video and new sub, Btw, why do you use reaper over Logic? Just curious.

Great video as usual, Mike. Thanks.
Question about the Reverb/Capitol Chambers channel on the drums. I didn't notice you mentioning it in this video but maybe you've described how you employ this in other videos? This channel is output from the Reverb out on the SD Mixer, right? I didn't see any signal coming through it in the DAW so not sure how you've set it up to be used either in SD or Reaper. Are the drums sent to it in SD or meant to be sent to it in Reaper? Or do individual drums send to it in either environment? And Capitol Chambers is the Reverb in SD for the Expansion/drum kit? If you have a video that details how you work with reverbs on drums within SD, where can I find it? Thanks again.

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke  3 роки тому

Hi Kevin, the Reverb channel can be used like all other channels. Just select which instrument you want to hear through it, route it into your DAW (if that’s your way to process) and enjoy the good sound. ;)
I usually only enable the snare on this Channel and sometimes the toms. It has a great sounds as they sampled the actual reverb chamber in Capitol Studios which are rather famous.
I don’t have a dedicated video about reverb on drums, but you’ll find a ton of that online.

Mike, sorry to ask... If I get SD3 do I still have access to all my old patterns and such? Thanks!

    • @MikeLuke

Old patterns from what? You mean SD2? Or coming from another VST?

@@MikeLuke From SD2, mostly want to keep the library packs and still have access to them... I didn't see that info at their site. I am guessing it stays but thought I would ask... SD3 is downloading as I type LOL

Lee Michaels Yes, you can use both your old libraries as well as old MIDI grooves you had used in SD2 before. Have fun using SD3. ;)

Hi Mike, I'm an artist who tracks my original songs using SD3 inside Studio One. I've been looking for a mixing engineer for my material and it's been a bit frustrating to find someone who will work with my SD3 midi performances in the mix rather than me exporting stems. As you well know, there's so much going on the drums that influence the entire mix. I'd like the mixing engineer to be able to, for instance, work with the stereo bottom snare panning if desired, or the ambient room mic choice, or possibly swap out the hats if they aren't sitting well with the whole, etc. Perhaps you are interested in having a conversation about my project. I've gained a lot from your videos, thanks so much and hope to hear from you. ~ Diedrich
