For what it's worth, I don't think either one of you are idiots. We all make mistakes, and hopefully we learn from them. You never know who is going to need your knowledge in how you fixed your mistakes. Looking forward to seeing your next video. Have a great weekend.

I believe, if you use lime in your outhouse, it will decompose a lot quicker .

Yes up at our Maine cabin we use peat moss and a bit of lime to hasten breakdown and eliminate odor. Works great! We’ve also used wood ash and saw dust.

I do remember that! It was scary when it happened but now it seems pretty funny because you didn't get hurt 🤕! One of my favorite memories at the beginning of y'all's building of the homestead. That's when Old Man Benjamin was still making footprints!🐾

My idea is to use a 55 gallon plastic drum to line the pit. Just cut the top and bottom off and drop it in. When it fills up just yank it out and put it in a new hole. Bury the old hole with ant extra dirt.

Few years ago (35 or so ) we went to Put in Bay on lake Erie and went to park and it had outhouses our youngest son looked down in the hole and said mom that looks like Hell down there :) my grandparents both sets had outhouses when I was young. Good job moving it thought you might use tractor 3 pt hitch to move it but that worked :) ps look for a set of forks for the 3pt sometimes you can get them cheap :) keep em coming !!!

I can’t believe how much sand there is guys, those steps certainly are lifesavers Jay, the only thing that worries me is how close the outhouse is to the edge, imagine sitting in there minding your own business and suddenly you start sliding down the hill, sounds like a scene from a comedy movie lol, on a serious note I hope it stays in place, and you’re not idiots either, l think you are clever and brave to take on a project like you did, and look what you’ve both accomplished, a beautiful off grid cabin in a very beautiful place, tfs x Julie 🇬🇧

I can't believe I just watched 18 mins of someone digging a new poop hole LOL. In the future, build the outhouse a little taller, and put a door in the back to access under the sitter, get you a plastic 55 gal barrel, and when it gets full, pull it out and dump it. No more digging. Dump it and cover it up.

You don't get to see a video like this every day, very educational. When my dad was a boy during the depression, he, my uncle, and a friend, moved a mean old guy's outhouse back several feet one Halloween. He never said if he knew the outcome...
Based on what I have read, composting toilets produce great fertilizer over time, so maybe in a year or so, you can dig up the old hole and put it on your garden... Just a guess, I am not an outhouse expert. I wadded up my last Sears catalog at around age 12, and now there are none... (I thought the step was to keep the sand from giving away and you sliding into the hole. 🙃

I don't know, but when you said you were glad it was done, and now you are free to do more important things, I would say that was a very important job because it would be hard to continue to use this outhouse when "the pile" in the hole got higher than floor level!
