I am very autistic about this music so thoughts:
The start to the album starting with Roundhay Garden Scene is insane because it's unlike what I'd expect from Adverrt?? It was elegant to a degree that I wasn't expecting, especially not at the start of an album. And considering the fact that Roundhay Garden Scene is a reference to the first ever movie of the same name, I feel like there's some interesting poeticism in play here that I don't fuly grasp yet.
Whoops! is one of those classic Adverrt sounding songs that I js listen to an unhealthy amount, I've easily replayed it hundreds of time since discovering the artist. The start with a light piano ties it well to the previous song and the usual drums and distorted vocals mix just radiates an energy that I've not seen many even similar sounding artists achieve. I js fuck with all the songs that have this sound idk why, but examples are like Smudge, Stray Cat (Damnation ver), Drown, etc.
BLEED OUT MY EYES IS THAT ONE SONG THAT WHEN I PLAY ON SHUFFLE I GO "WOW THAT'S A GOOD SONG" BUT I ALWAYS FORGET WHICH ONE IT WAS AFTER IT'S FINISHED. I love it, it's so heavy and intense and it just feels right, especially with the way it calms down and speeds up at times.
Scopophobia changes tone DRASTICALLY. It feels like another album entirely and I kinda love that. Kinda feels video game inspired, but different then Spine Removal Simulator. And it also changes what game soundtrack it reminds me of 3 times I'm pretty sure, and it gives a really unique blended feel that I think I actually quite like. It's not one I've listened to a lot personally, I always preferred the tracks with the distorted vocal parts or whatever I should call them. (I'm not a music artist) 3:12 part kinda sounds like the game theory intro and I can't get that out of my head.
Hair feels like a song I could sip a glass of wine to. Like, it's the equivelant of jazz to mentally ill gay people. I feel like I could enjoy a fine lakeside retreat with this playing on an old record player.
Smiling in the mirror scares me already starts off hitting NASTY, I love it. Starts way more intense in it's instruments then others, and the distorted vocal part that kicks in that js sounds like pained yelling adds so much to it. This is what christian fundementalists were imagining when they listened to normal rock music. And there's also some real talent behind all parts of this, it's all played so well that one wouldn't expect from a relatively small artist. Feels like an homage to some metal tracks honestly. That's what I'm realising w this, a lot of these tracks stylistically feel like paying respects to other genres but in a distinct style. Anyways, absolutely adding this one to my playlist, no idea how I missed it before.
Instrumentals wise, I think I still gotta give it to XVI though. I don't know what about this song sounds so fucking nuts, but it's js so well played. It's another one of the songs that I always love but forget to add to my playlist. Esp that electric guitar in the back, it js feels right and so high quality. Contrasted w the piano that's so prominent in this album? Absolute peak.
I'll be real, somehow I never listened to Almost Real before writing this, and I have no clue how it eluded me. It kinda feels like it ties the entire album together, matching the slow pace of R.G.S., and especially after an intense song like XVI, it's kinda of an intense tone shift which I appreciate. The echoey guitar that comes in at 1:34 especially sent me. It reminds me of Night in the Woods, because it has a similar sounding song in one of it's more important parts, and it's just. Perfection. One a personal level, this song hits insanely hard, and it feels like a perfect epilogue to something somber. Something that wasn't a loss, but it wasn't a win either. Something happened, and now you're sitting outside the gas station on a bench and smoking your last cigarette as you wait for someone you called to come pick you up.
I haven't given much love to Whoops! as an album before because I always preferred the classic Adverrt sound in Damnation and They all want you dead, but upon listening to it and actually having time to think about the songs, I might js put this much higher. It's beautiful in a fucked up way, which is the best way something can be beautiful in my eyes.
Tl:dr amazing artistry and I will continue to be unhealthily obsessed w this music for the foreseeable future
