- January 1, 2006: QB Doug Flutie goes out in style, converting the first drop kick in an NFL game since 1941in his last career game.
RE-TITLE: Bill Belichick smiles for the first time since the Battle of Gettysburg
Oh Jesus lolol
Or George Washington the idepedence or US
Lmao😂😂😂
Planet of the Atheists lmaooooo
Or after the the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima
credit the announcer for recognizing something that nobody had seen in 65 years, he called it
Well he was known to have practiced it and with that bizarre formation it would have sprang into anyone's mind.
@@thenekom just stop your embarrassing yourself
Steve Novack bruh you just embarrassed your own ass
thenekom true
Adrian Nogales yeah
Kevin Harlan recognizing this as a possible drop kick is brilliant.
Great point.
Not really. It’s a very unique formation the team is in with only a couple possible options on what they’re doing.
@@LGRW313 Yeh, on the spot being aware of a formation that hasn't reoccurred in 60 years is so casual... Yeh.
Unki Unko it’s not that rare of a formation. Football just isn’t your thing it’s not a big deal.
Evan lol no way you would assume drop kick, dipshit
The first drop kick since 1941 AND Belichick caught on camera smiling? It's like someone taking a picture of a double rainbow and then realizing there was a unicorn chilling in the background.
So true ... more magical than the lucky charms leprechaun... good ole midget
And they were losing at home to Miami... can’t get stranger
@@brettwiley4064 pretty sure it was meaningless game at end of the season
Double rainbows aren't that rare.
@@ATalkingBadger always a realist lol.... bet ur a grammar nazi 2 yes?? Lol
Not only did this make Bill smile, it made him smile while he was losing a game (there was some time left). That’s the rarest thing in football 😂
It was a pointless last game of the season, they were resting their starters for the playoffs
Not even just a smirk either, it was a genuine beaming smile. The only other time I’ve seen so much as a smirk during the regular season was when he did that thing against the Jets where he burned a couple minutes off the clock taking bogus penalties
He thinks very highly of himself especially now that we know the answer to who was resposible responsible for all the winning in NE
@@devins1195 The fact that Bill has been mentally checked out for the past 5-7 years doesn’t change his contributions to the dynasty. There are a lot of key moments to the dynasty that Brady had zero control over & were all Bill.
For just one example, Bill found a needle in the haystack & shaped him into the greatest QB ever. If Brady had come out of the box as the GOAT, he would’ve been a first round pick. Bill scouted him & assumed Brady would be drafted in the 3rd round. They didn’t “need”another QB, but when they got to the 6th round & noticed Brady was still available, they changed plans & drafted him.
Brady was extremely clutch & he almost never made mistakes when it mattered most, but he was not ready to carry the team on his own AT LEAST until 2007. Bill & the defense were absolutely the most important factors in the early Super Bowls.
And before you say “the defense was always failing and forcing Brady to make 4th quarter comebacks”…
…the defense kept the score low enough to allow Brady to make those comebacks, and if Brady had played better in the first 3 quarters, they would’ve never had to make the comebacks
@@devins1195 Bill has been particularly terrible at scouting/draft choices in recent years. But he was one of the better scouts/GMs pre-2016. He’s also historically been one of the best game planners and before he started sundowning, he made some of the boldest & best in-game coaching decisions of the past 20 years
Bill actually smiled
He loves his special teams
I couldn't believe it. And after skipping back to that part about 15 times, I STILL can't believe it.
He was getting a prostate exam during the dropkick
Ikr!
308wce 05 While currently losing a game too, hell froze over.
I love how Bill have Doug a historic thing to do in his last game. That’s actually really cool of him.
Belichick has so much respect for the history of this game. When the Patriots play in Green Bay, he has them do a tour of Lambeau Field and the Packer Hall of Fame. He focuses on Lombardi and what a great coach he was.
@@bryanglass5818 That’s probably why he’s the most successful coach of all time. The media tries to paint him in a certain light but he’s just a brilliant man and his passion for the game is contagious. Every fan should admire and respect him
Was that the point?
Dont forget Flutie is a homeboy, grew up in Natick, went to BC and finished in Foxboro. He was a total anomaly, top shelf competitor with the heart of a lion. BB did him right, total class move, legend to legend.
I agree. Belichick doing this showed great character. He knew this was Doug's last game and wanted him to go out with a bang. But I know another former coach who was a fucking asshole with ZERO character who didn't do this for his star player in his last game. And for all of you who are old enough reading this, you already know who I'm talking about... Mike Ditka. When the Bears were winning the Super Bowl in '86, that clown let "Refrigerator Perry" score the last TD instead of letting Walter Payton score. After all Payton had done for that team, he was slapped in the face by Mike Ditka and not allowed to score at the end of the game. Ditka said "It would have been bad sportsmanship to let my superstar running back score when the game was already won." That was his logic. That would have been acceptable if it wasn't Walter Payton's last game... But it was his last game!!!! Ditka knew he was retiring!!!! Him doing that to Sweetness still pisses me off to this day!!
When you add up his Boston college,USFL,CFl,NFL career Doug flutie was one hell of a athlete.
Flutie was even better than Brady. He just never got a fair shot.
Even though I cannot stand the patriots. I have to agree
Flutie was ahead of his time. His size and skill set would perfect for today’s game.
Still crazy hearing he was Chicago Bear. Apparently, Ditka didn’t like him. In his eyes, Flutie was just too small. Him leaving the team was probably for the best career wise.
David Lafleche that’s a stretch
Billichik smiling looked like the Grinch’s heart growing.
It grew three sizes that day.

Was that the punter or something
Bradley Keith I agree dude. He was a true football guy and a great person off the field
Trollking2988 ignoring your name for a moment, he was a heisman trophy winning QB that threw the most iconic Hail Mary in the history of football
Didn’t do much in the NFL, but did make a pro bowl and won comeback player of the year that same season. He’s also apparently considered one of the greatest CFL players of all time.
I was 13 when this happened and tbh I couldn’t believe he was still on an NFL roster, he won the heisman 22 years before this kick.
Easy Eis in 1991 he threw for 6.6k yards in the CFL with like 14 yards per attempt lmao
Bradley Keith Oh? We appreciate him up in Canada.
I was watching a Red Sox game some years ago when the batter hit a line shot down the first base line. A fan wearing a glove in the front row, just past the dugout, made a tremendous backhand play. The fans cheered, and then the announcer said oh that's Doug Flutie. He turned and waved to the crowd. They kept showing the replay and he looked so smooth, fully extended. Phenomenal athlete. Good dude.
I saw that game and flutie catching that ball was so cool.
lopez
Ikr. Very cool! ✌
Flutie knows baseball.
RIP Doug Flutie
Also RIP Wade Boggs
Yet somehow Wade Phillips started Rob Johnson over Flutie in the playoffs.
Doug Flutie always played his ass off everywhere he played.......that was fun to watch.
Had one heck of a good career when he wasn't always awarded a fair shot at playing just because he's a little bit shorter then most QBs.
doug flutie sucks he's overrated
@Vincent Cuttolo If QBs still got denied a chance to play because of their heights then Drew Brees would've never gotten a fair shake in the NFL.
I liked Fliutie Flakes with bananas

Doug Flutie's career book-ended with that Hail Mary with Boston college and this drop kick. Then all that massive hard work and success in between! What an athlete!
If I recall correctly, the last play of his high school career he threw a hail mary to his brother for a TD. The guy just had a little magic or something.
@@MiltonRoe I did not know that! Thanks!
now he's doing ads highlighting his strong libido. I think I'd rather have that skill.
@@MiltonRoe The last play of his pop warner team he also threw a hail mary... he did this a lot... for last plays
Actually, he was making great plays at BC beginning in his freshman year.No 1 Pitt came to BC with Dan Marino at QB. I think it was Flutie's first start or first start at home. He played incredibly .Pitt won, but I recall not by much.
Flutie was a hell of an athlete.
CFL yes it
Best "midget" quarterback since Eddie LeBaron. LOL
The NFL fucked him over so badly. Especially the Bills.
He was very well liked during his time here in San Diego!
Butter Johnson you are correct and for that the bills will never a Super Bowl
I still remember Flutie Flakes.
Lol I have a box somewhere
He was impossible not to love!
Working at the Natick Mall a few years back he came in our store. Kept my cool the whole time while I helped him. As he was leaving and thanked me I said you’re welcome, nice kick by the way. He just smiled. Great player and really nice guy!
Your full of it
I think a professional athlete, no matter how good they were during their playing time, would like to be remembered as also as a nice guy. Love reading these comments about Flutie as a good bloke and great with fans. One of my heroes.
Flutie was a baller everytime he got an opportunity on the NFL field
Except in Chicago, lmao.
@Dan Chapowski Blasphemous
Tbh, him doing a drop kick shows how much of a really talented football player and athlete Mr. Flutie was, seriously. Like just, plain old football. No wins/losses, no stats, no NFL, just the game. That’s impressive. I tell you, if Flutie had the size and stature of a Marino or Elway, or any of the al time greats, man, who knows what might’ve been for him. Cause one thing for sure, the man knew how to play the game, and execute.
Good point about size. He got the Bills to the playoffs. Time in the USFL and CFL ---- no NFL was willing to develop him. Also, it wasn't just athletic talent. He had a rare quality, that Jeter had and Mahomes possesses. They can think on their feet at speed and think not like others. They made things happen and can rescue a team out of a bad situation.
Flutie came up with some great moments in football history. 🏈
That was the perfect play to send Flutie home on.
I was at this game IN THE ENDZONE that Flutie kicked into. Great moment 👊🏾
Flutie could do it all. So much talent. A hero to all of us under 6 ft.
He was a hero for everyone. No matter how tall. The Patriots should have kept him.
Hell he was a hero for everyone under 5 foot 7
How many professional athletes play with the same passion they did as a kid?

The flying Gramatica brothers that used to celebrate extra points and FGs like they just won the super bowl would probably qualify. Especially when the one idiot got hurt at midfield while celebrating a FG when the team was down 20 😂

Flutie was great. I loved watching him play. You could tell he was like a kid sometimes. He loved the game. Another one was Farve. He was just a big kid that loved the game.
Kevin Harlan is my favorite play by play guy whether it's radio or TV. The guy can call a moment like this like no one else can. To see Bill crack a smile should be a picture for the ages too.
Doug Flutie sure had quite an interesting career in football.
He really is a fine example of someone who made the most of their opportunities.
He lites up everywhere he goes. A great roll model. He dominated Canadian Football. The drop kick is one of my favorite football moments.
Doug Flutie is an all time great.
And he played drums with Boston at symphony hall

He called the T-Wolves w Garnet for years..soo entertaining!
I love Kevin Harlan. He's awesome.
Doug Flutie: one of the most underrated players ever to play the game.
Nobody knew how to use the clock better than Doug Flutie. Incredible talent PLUS that made him fun to watch.
The best and classiest player I ever saw. I was working on the sideline crew in the CFL and he gave me an autograph for my son during a game. He still has it
Flutie was always fun to watch, he could pull off some crazy stuff.
Never forget that the Miami Dolphins coach in this game was Nick Saban.
@Andrew O'Mahony lmao dude can win in college, with a team guaranteed to get stars every year.. but in the real league, this niggas 15-17 lmao fucking bum

Doug flutie was one of the most underestimated athletes of all time. The man was only like 5'8 he got passed around in the NFL so he went to the Canadian football league and literally basically set every record they have or broke every record they have.
@DougFlutie was just the best. The best in College, the best in the USFL, the best in the CFL, and then the best comeback into the NFL - Love ya Doug!

Flutie was a remarkable player, I never get tired of watching his highlights. Hall of Fame player.
The fact that you still only get one point for a drop kick is why it's so rare. Make it worth 2 points and we'll see it more often.
But If the drop kick is worth only 1 point and supposedly it ain't easy to do....why not just try the regular extra point kick which is worth 1 point too?
Then we're playing rugby. No thanks
@@bneale Well, I still don't get why Belichick made Flutie drop kick the ball if it was only going to be worth 1 point. An extra point would be far easier to make.
Nigga I still take the train or bus to the game damn
Mario Lopez it was a retirement gift i guess? Game probably didnt matter for them either
And they did that while losing, a move that simply shows the love of the game
Ryan Prosper They we’re losing by 5. Whether he made or missed really didn’t affect the game situation. But still super cool to do it then rather than up by 20
Hand to God, right when Belichick smiled, he appeared on my TV in a humorous Subway commercial, and processing both of these events at once nearly made my head explode like a zit...
I love how even the Dolphins that were rushing were barely trying at all because they were trying to figure out what the hell the Patriots were even doing.
Is that so…seems more like they may have just been letting him have the moment
I finally found something worth liking. Cheers.
I don't know why I love this moment so much. Flutie was -- and still is -- the man.
Flutie brought to football while at BC. Flutie Brought me to patriots. Coach B and Brady kept me. Being from Massachusetts is why I’ll always remain a pats fan!
One of my favourite QB since CFL
It's nice to see the original Rugby Football style of play return to American Football every now and then. When I coached both Rugby and American Football at a school in Houston I trained one of my Rugby Backs to drop kick on the fly. In an American Football game he stood back as if to throw for a conversion. No defender cam in but waited for the pass. Our boy top kicked the goal. In middle school American Football a kick after is worth 2 and a conversion is worth 1. So, it really benefitted us.
What a local legend nothing quite like it! Defied the odds as a 5-9 qb . Never really saw him play but I remember watching this game as if it were yesterday. Pure gold!
The name "Flutie" was synonymous with "winner." He just had that instinct to find a way and the skill to pull it off. A few inches short in height upset the critics. In 1999, had he been allowed to continue as QB for the Bills, he would have found a way to gut out a clear path to the Super Bowl and found a way to win that. Winning was in his DNA, and a heluva guy, to boot.
Not sure whether you watched, but he was a marvellous player in the CFL - the game was perfect for his wide range of skills.
...to boot. BA-DA PSSH🥁 🤣
Flutie winning the super bowl in 1999 would have probably prevented kurt warner going to the hall of fame, and probably flutie himself would have been in canton right now...
Ran into Doug on the beach recently, took a min to think of who he was but what a super nice guy.

Doug Flutie famously practices it in warmups even when he was the starting QB. As a Bills fan he was really fun to watch.
@derpderp-np3tr the lead singer of matchbox 20 must really know how to ball.
As a rugby player, I find this friggin fantastic! Drop kicking a football is not easy haha.
1941... Flutie’s rookie year.
Didn’t know belichick was capable of smiling. Learn something new everyday.
You need a high speed camera on him when the gun sounds at the end of a Super Bowl victory. You may get 1 or 2 usable frames at 240p.
I never saw this...EPIC. Doug Flutie was awesome.
I know, I've seen him play against Baltimore teams in the USFL, CFL and NFL.
Doug F. is Legendary! 1 of the best QBs to play the game, at all levels! Love this guy! Never underestimate your opponents?!
I was at this game- right behind that goalpost. In person it looked like Flutie punted the football through the uprights, so we were very confused. After seeing the replay at home we saw that the ball barely hit the ground before he booted it. The Pats were only losing because it was the last game of the regular season so they rested the majority of their starters to be ready for the playoffs/avoid injury. That’s why Belichick was able to smile cuz he didn’t care about the L in that situation.
That's so cool that you were there. I'm glad that Bill gave Flutie the chance to do that : )
YEAH RIGHT. STOP IT.
I was at Woodstock, even though I was born in 1972.. lol..
Besides Super Bowl victories, I’ve never seen coach BB genuinely smile like that during or after a game
Bill smiled...
And time stood still

kinda like the old Tom Landry days!
an end-over-end beauty!
Can we just talk about how nice the kick looked? Dude was practicing that during the off season!
Calgary Stampeders fans will recall the time he scored a touchdown with one shoe on and one shoe off. It was the CFL West final of '92. They won that game, of course, and went on to win it all (the Grey Cup) that year. Dude is such a legend. Shame he didn't get to win a Super Bowl, because I believe he would have been the difference-maker that would have won the Bills _that_ game.
a number of American stars underestimated in their home country came north to prove they could play. We're proud in Canada for giving them that chance to be noticed.
That was cool, good for old Flutie flakes. Love him or hate him, that little guy was a gamer.
He was good during his USFL days, couldn't cut in the NFL, made a name for himself in the CFL where he was voted Greatest Canadian Football Player of all time at the 100th Grey Cup which is their Super Bowl and came back to the NFL.

I realize that next to a lot of the giants in the NFL that Flutie is "small" and that most QBs are over 6' but I think it's demeaning to always say how "small" he is.

Don’t forget it’s a lot easier to kick a punt than it is a drop kick as the ball has to hit the floor.
Andrew Farrow really? it is?? 🤯
Bre3zyYaB1sh yes. That’s why it’s called a drop kick.

Andrew Farrow wow. Thanks guy. I always thought drop kicks were easy untill you said they weren’t.
Doug Flutie was a great Quarterback in the NFL and he was popular with anyone who remembers him for his drop kicked a field goal with New England Patriots
Ahead of his time.
Today's game fits him perfectly 👌🏽
Great for Flutie's last game, and a nice homage to deep football history seeing a drop kick.
Flutie Did it!!! Doug Flutie made a drop kick!!! All jokes aside a good end to a great College and Pro era.
Doug was an amazing player and was so happy for him.
If I Was an NFL head coach I would get a guy who could specialize in drop kicks, if you miss them they act like punts so you do not get that 7 yard penalty for a miss, the other team has to return them or they are touchbacks if they through the end zone. Say you have the ball on the 40, but you do not want to risk giving up bad field position on a 57 yard FG attempt. Although your kicker may be more accurate than a drop kicker forcing the other team to return the attempt makes it slight better than the punt because of the off chance you can score 3 points.
I belive that if a drop kick is missed is just like a field goal. Otherwise that would make a lot of sense...
@@GWEBrasil15 I haven't read the rule book in 20 or more years but if a punter drops the ball and kicks it off the ground it still had to be returned and not treated as a Punt not a FG if it did not go through the uprights (miss FG) ... I recall the scenario happening in a Regular Season game between 2 teams after a punter incidentally dropped the ball on his 2 step approach but I can not remember between who and what year.

" Two weeks later, on December 20, Buffalo Bills punter Colton Schmidt executed what is believed to be an unintentional drop kick after a botched punt against the Washington Redskins; because the Redskins recovered the kick, it was treated as a punt (and not as a field goal attempt, which would have pushed the ball back to the spot of the kick)."
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drop_kick#NFL
@@GWEBrasil15 great research work dude, looks like you were correct and the incident I saw in the 80's or 90's was treated as a punt for the very same reason, the opposing team recovered it instead of leaving it.
I remember a Grey cup game where he lost, to his brother Darren catching a game winning pass. Apparently after the final whistle he walked to his brother and whispered "Which boy caught that pass?" The CFL is great because lots of non-prototypical very talented players continue their carreers, simply for love of the game. Moon and Garcias ended up back in the NFL to finish their time playing. Obviously not the same talent level, but the CFL is full of passionate players.
