There have been rumors of bringing back Group A with the R4 class. On tarmac, you have to drive smoothly to get the perfect line to the apex. Tarmac gives you all the grip you need already, it's not like the driver has to compensate for the car's lack of traction like on gravel. As a matter of fact, going hard may actually ruin you tyres. So you need to rev low and let the engine express itself on its whole length with sometimes a longer gearbox. Turbo lag isn't an issue since you need torque, not power - and that happens at low RPM. A heavy steering is recommended to turn progressively and only slide when needed. You also need strong diff settings - blocking diffs being one of the better options. I have to add that it was raining on that particular occasion of the Tour de Corse, so Mäkinen had to be even more precise, and give as much torque as possible to the four wheels to find grip. McRae's style was really particular. It was magical because he could just defy the odds. This is a Tour de Corse he has actually won - by going hard even though it isn't recommended. That's just McRae. Only he could pull this trick.
One last thing. McRae may have had an H-pattern gearbox, but the FIA authorized some assistance to the clutch. So it's far from being a typical gearbox from the nineties, there's more to it. :)

There have been rumors of bringing back Group A with the R4 class. The R4 class would be a 2.0T with AWD, 34mm restrictor, sequential gearbox, and a few other things that the R class allows that group n forbids. I wish they made an even better version of R4 called R5 and used that as a replacement for WRCars. The GroupA cars seem to be better than todays WRC.

On tarmac, you have to drive smoothly to get the perfect line to the apex. Tarmac gives you all the grip you need already, it's not like the driver has to compensate for the car's lack of traction like on gravel. As a matter of fact, going hard may actually ruin you tyres.
So you need to rev low and let the engine express itself on its whole length with sometimes a longer gearbox. Turbo lag isn't an issue since you need torque, not power - and that happens at low RPM. A heavy steering is recommended to turn progressively and only slide when needed. You also need strong diff settings - blocking diffs being one of the better options.
I have to add that it was raining on that particular occasion of the Tour de Corse, so Mäkinen had to be even more precise, and give as much torque as possible to the four wheels to find grip.
McRae's style was really particular. It was magical because he could just defy the odds. This is a Tour de Corse he has actually won - by going hard even though it isn't recommended. That's just McRae. Only he could pull this trick.
One last thing. McRae may have had an H-pattern gearbox, but the FIA authorized some assistance to the clutch. So it's far from being a typical gearbox from the nineties, there's more to it. :)
@@stam1ska Peak power isn't necessarily achieved at peak Rpm .... why rev a car that's already working hard , when you don't need to ?!? ... Especially when he needs to finish every stage , ie Preserving engine , tyres etc as much as possible
