The weapon definitely shines more in spellsword build than a pure caster for sure. Still miffed we got a thrusting sword as a weapon catalyst instead of a carian sword variant.
I agree. I don’t know why they just didn’t give us a regular straight sword. At first I tried to justify it with “it’s good for roll catching” but you can just do that with a Carian Slicer into Piercer combo. I wish they would have just given the straight sword with a Claymore move set.
Also pro tip, if you press back + light and heavy attack, you CAN actually use guard counters on this weapon. I'm honestly not sure why it's this specific button combo, but it actually works!
@@Jaffy3 After blocking press light+heavy attack at the same time, no need to press back no nothing. Just tested and is really cool to learn you can guard counter with this! It truly is a jack of all trades!
I sent it to my new game character because of what you mentioned. Convenience. I loved the weapon, might be my favorite DLC weapon after perfumer bottles because they're weird and refreshing (as in new)
You can powerstance this sword with another thrusting sword in the main hand, for example frozen needle and have some fun "pew pew pew" gameplay. Note that when you have it in your offhand, the spell cast become the ash of war button. You can then build mix Int/Dex.
Edit: Not sure if youre familair with the souls UA-camr Youwy,. He does a lot of testing and tier list content for Elden Ring. He found that since the update and bufd to scaling on the sword, it has the best scaling of all sorcery catalysts until 40 int. After that the scaling moves closer the Carian and etc I have learned so much from reading the comments alone 😂 thank you for this video and a build infan play around with. Especially for something all casters wished was in the base game! Subbed 🤙🏾
@@CuddleBuddee I do, I love his content. And yes. Most of the sorcery scaling gets the higher return with the low scaling catalyst and then theres hugue difference at soft and hard caps. It still not as good as the other ones, pure magic catalyst users will still outclass it's damage but definetly not bad at all, especially with how much utility it has.
my build right now is dex/int with dual thrusting swords and the azur staff. so being able to condense it down to just two swords and sword magics sounds perfect
I had to get used to not using heavy attack. But one thing I found out I could do was infinity use Gavel Of Haima if you have a staff in your left hand similar to it you just had to staves. So you don’t have to worry about post delay of the second hit. Another thing I also love is that if you have a staff in your offhand, you can use a quick impaling thrust to get heavier opponents out of your face that the sword itself cannot do alone because you know.. thrusting swords = low poise. I loved being able to poise break a bigger enemy into a staff based Carian piercer. Then switch to Carian shield with Carian Retaliation and buff it. Now I can decide whether to parry or block with buffed up shield. I often go for Parries though since I’m a Parryin Knight lol. All in all. This sword opened up more options that I initially realized when I first got it. I as actually kinda disappointed when I saw I was unable to change the ash of war but that changed very quickly once I saw the value in the sword.
I actually kinda hope they give this thing a little more damage as a melee weapon. Since it doesn't do as much as a regular staff I'd like it to do at least almost as much as a regular sword since mostly spellblades will be using this. At least I'd think so considering if you want a sword that uses spells you probably wanna use the sword mainly and the spells as support.
DS2 did this better. Not surprising since they still have the best magic system in Souls. Not only did you have more weapons that could be catalysts, but they had better spell damage and could be infused with your element to be even better.

back as in pull back on a stick?
I always wondered what that animation was for! I just thought it was a step back or cancel! Thank you!!!
@@zedgrotexhow do you do this?

the fact that you can't put an ash of war on a specifically magical sword and all it does is stab forward with impaling thrust is a crime.

@@rpjames8 ah I gotcha !
@@rpjames8 and true. No arguments here
I use this with carian sword spells and carian thrusting shield, pairs very well
Impaling Thrust is for those enemies that keep blocking your spell with their shield, also decent poise damage

Thanks for posting, i was wondering about this
We've got you covered fam!
One of fun to play build. Thanks for sharing man.
I’d prob throw parry on shield for fun
It's your perfect battle mage weapon!
If you could swap the ashe of war, i could see this as a fun option even with lower sorcery scaling.
This has the highest crit damage in the game. So go for poise breaks with grav magic, glint and finger magic
Why shield if u can use some parry tool or buff tool? New dagger can parry and power-stance with trusting swords so amazing!
Still not sure if the carian sword magic + the staff are better 😅
I was racking my brain about this thx alot
Would have rather had the endure ash on the weapon. Makes more sense. Endure into moon spell fixes the stagger issue that plagues this.
Buena Build, utilizas mucha magia de hielo, el sombrero de Ranni le iría bien a la Build Zacatecas. Zac.
@@elconxuro Qué casualidad. Yo también soy de Zacatecas.

wonder if its better with all swords spells
Your English is great man

can we put an ash of war on the shield? will it override impaling thrust?
@@bilbli2 it will, and magic shield and barricade shield for example override each other!
I find it nice with a thrusting sheild honestly gives you so many options
why me dont couter attack enemy ?
it got sooooooo OP its still crap xD
